6 Video Views·Dec 5, 2025
Moon watchers gathered around the world on Thursday to watch the last supermoon of 2025 rise in the night sky.
"Supermoon" is the term used to refer to full moons that occur when the moon is at, or very near, its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, a position known as perigee, according to NASA.
There are typically three to four supermoons per year, which can appear up to 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than a typical full moon, according to NASA. In 2025, there have been three supermoons, the previous ones occurring in October and November.
