Although Fibich frequently drew on E. T. A. Hoffmann’s stories for inspiration, his imagination needed no prompting when composing Poem. His passionate love for Anežka Schulzová, who was twenty years younger, inspired him to create a musical diary made up of 376 little pieces. He later arranged number 139 for orchestra as an idyll titled At Twilight, which gained worldwide fame in 1901 under the name Poem, thanks to the Czech violinist Jan Kubelík.
