The restoration of “The Annunciation” by Fra Angelico commented by Ana González Mozo

Ana González Mozo, especialista del gabinete de documentación técnica del Museo del Prado, comenta la técnica y el proceso artístico de "La Anunciación", de Fra Angelico.

Datada a mediados de la década de 1420, “La Anunciación” de Fra Angelico, pintada para el convento de Santo Domingo en Fiésole, núcleo central de la muestra, es el primer altar florentino de estilo renacentista en el que se utiliza la perspectiva para organizar el espacio, y en el que las arquerías góticas se abandonan a favor de formas más rectangulares. “La Anunciación” del Prado es considerada actualmente una de las primeras obras maestras de su autor y en la que Fra Angelico demostró conocer las transformaciones que estaban sucediéndose en el arte toscano.

La generosa colaboración de Friends of Florence y American Friends of the Prado Museum, con el Museo del Prado ha permitido acometer la restauración de “La Anunciación”, así como de otras obras ajenas al Prado que también formarán parte de la gran exposición: “Fra Angelico y el origen del Renacimiento florentino”.

The restoration of “The Annunciation” by Fra Angelico commented by Ana González Mozo.

The centerpiece of the exhibition, “The Annunciation”, was painted by Fra Angelico in the mid-1420s for the Convent of San Domenico in Fiesole, and is considered the first Florentine altarpiece in the Renaissance style, using perspective to organize space and forsaking Gothic archways in favor of more rectangular shapes. The Prado’s “The Annunciation” is today considered one of the artist’s first master-pieces in which Fra Angelico proved to know the transformations that were happening in the Tuscan art.

The generous collaboration of Friends of Florence and American Friends of the Prado Museum, with the Prado Museum has facilitated the restoration of “The Annunciation” and other works not held at the Prado Museum and to be included in the major exhibition opening on May 28th: “Fra Angelico and the Rise of the Florentine Renaissance”.
