Kingfisher chick swallowing fish
Kingfisher chicks are able to swallow a fish of the same size as they are themselves. Swallowing and digesting of a large prey excludes the chick from the brood competition for food for several hours. In optimal conditions, by providing as large fish as they are able to swallow, parental birds reduce or even eliminate the competition for food among the chicks in the nest. They reduce the begging for food to one last chick, while the others are satiated for a significant part of a day and stay calm in the nest cavity.
