Hi, and welcome to my channel. In this video, I want to share with you the shading process of
this face. We shall look at the shading of the eye, the shading of the nose,
shading of the lips and cheek, and this dark silky hair.
The tools and materials used are all listed in the description.
Beginning with the eye, I started by shading directly with the medium charcoal pencil,
the dark small linear details of the eye, such as the eyelid lines, pupil outline, eyebrows,
the charcoal powder remains on the tip of the blending stump, can be used to shade very small
details, such as the pupil and the corners of the eye, just as it's being done. But then,
this shading might not be so smooth, so go over with a brush to yield a smoother blend.
Moving on to rendering the form and shadows around the eye.
Now, I'm going to begin the shading with the blending stump. Personally, I prefer shading
smaller details or shadows first with a blending stump, and then later enhancing the shading with
a brush, because with this tool, I have full control of the charcoal powder that I'm able to
prevent the charcoal powder from spreading into the light areas. You can also use a cotton bud,
or if you are comfortable shading these smaller shadows directly with a brush, then that's fine.
Now, using a brush, I'm going to go over the shading with thin layers of charcoal powder,
will then be used to darken the very dark details like the eyelid lines, pupil, etc.
The iris isn't as deep as the pupil, so little pressure was applied on the charcoal pencil,
and then smudged with the blending stump to achieve this middle tone.
The hard charcoal pencil is currently being used to achieve this medium to dark value.
I've switched to the soft charcoal pencil for very dark details. Now, it's the hard charcoal
pencil that I'm shading with to add more depth. Next, the electric eraser will be used to create
little pressure on it. The pressure can be increased on the Tombow eraser for strong highlights.
The eyelashes can now be drawn with the medium charcoal pencil.
Moving on to drawing the skin pores, an HB graphite pencil is being used to create a pattern
of dots to give an impression of dark skin pores. You can use a darker grade for darker pores.
I've now switched to the hard charcoal pencil for darker pores and to add darker shades for
more depth. The brushing over is purposely to reduce the sharpness and also blend the pencil
highlights on the skin pores, also using dots. This helps create a better impression of skin pores.
Also, by applying little pressure on the Tombow eraser, I shall erase and create soft highlights
to achieve smooth transition between the strong highlights and the dark skin layer. Next, the
eyebrows will then be drawn using the medium and hard charcoal pencils. Use the hard charcoal pencil
the nose. I started by shading the nostril outline with the medium charcoal pencil
and then smudging these lines with the blending stump. Moving on to shading the form, I started
shading the smaller areas first using the blending stump filled with charcoal powder
and then shading over this built form with thin layers of charcoal powder using a brush to enhance
charcoal pencil, I'm going to shade to add darker value to the dark areas for more depth.
Also, using the HB graphite pencil, I'm shading to add a little bit of texture to the form.
Next step, the nostrils will then be darkened using the soft charcoal pencil.
Moving on to the highlights, the electric eraser will be used for strong highlights.
Dotted highlights is being created to give an impression of skin pores.
The Tombow eraser will also be used to erase and create soft highlights and also to offer a
the shading of the hair. First, grab the soft charcoal pencil and draw the dark hair strands.
Next, smudge these drawn dark hair strands with a cotton bud.
The next step, shade over with thin layers of charcoal powder using a brush. This is to achieve
A white charcoal pencil can be used for strong highlights on the hair strands.
