Only a week after the successful second launch of the New Glenn rocket, Blue Origin turned heads once again with the surprise announcement of an upgraded, more powerful variant: the New Glenn 9x4.
This new model represents a major leap forward, hinting at the company’s long-term ambition to develop a full family of orbital launch vehicles—much like SpaceX’s now-iconic Falcon series. The mission is clear: boost payload capacity, cut launch costs, and secure a stronger foothold in the global launch market.

So, what exactly makes the New Glenn 9x4 such a game-changer?
At its core, it’s all about raw power and efficiency. The 9x4 variant dramatically upgrades both stages of the rocket, enhancing thrust, payload capability, and operational reliability. The first stage will now pack nine BE-4 engines, up from seven in the current design, while the upper stage will feature four BE-3U engines—double the previous count.
Even more impressive are the performance improvements:
BE-4 engines will see their thrust jump from 550,000 to 640,000 pounds each.
BE-3U engines will increase from 320,000 to 400,000 pounds of thrust.
These upgrades translate to a significant leap in what the rocket can carry:
Over 70 tons to Low Earth Orbit.
