where we believe every home has a story.
Hi, I'm Cher Beal.
I've been a designer for more than 30 years.
Welcome to my home in Newport Beach, California.
We've been living in this home for more than 20 years.
It's a house that we saw as an open house under construction
and was simply not what we were looking for at the time,
but we had a toddler and a teenager
and all their friends in our much smaller house
and the teenagers were tripping over the toddler toys
and so this house that had a lot of space and a playroom
and a separate area for the teenagers
was really just a dream come true for us.
So we've been here a long time
and this house has been remodeled over time
and adjusted accordingly depending on our life phase.
The style of the house is Mediterranean tile roof in stucco,
very traditional and kind of stiff inside.
In a lot of places I installed metal window sliders.
I opened up everything to the outside,
kind of everywhere in the house
and it became a much cozier and coastal feel of a house,
but still in keeping with its primary architecture.
I've decorated in keeping with the style of each space of the house.
So in our more casual family areas,
I have a earthy, more natural vibe
and in more formal areas,
I have things sort of a little more formal and upscale.
I think it would feel like too much
if every single room was just an explosion.
So in the spaces where we are primarily
or perhaps we're entertaining,
then that feels more appropriate.
And then in other spaces,
sometimes it's just a little hint of red
or a little teeny thing,
a little accessory that makes you feel like,
oh,it's Christmas,
but there's some relief from too much decor.
Welcome to my kitchen dining space.
In the entry of the space,
instead of doing a regular Christmas tree,
we decided it would be more fun and a little different
to shake it up and use some natural branches.
We're going with the woodland mushroom theme
that seems to be so popular
and we've got all kinds of fun hanging owls and acorns
and mushrooms of all different sizes and shapes
and of course, a few little tea lights.
So we did this by putting our branches in a...
We flocked them a little bit
to just make them look like the snow had fallen on top of them
and then we put them in this faux base
and added some moss and some little birds
and we've got candles and fresh flowers
and all kinds of funny mushroom shapes and birds
and natural woodland creatures throughout.
So we just think that's sort of a fun entry greeting.
This entry is sort of a greeting space
and a transition space between our casual dining
and our kitchen and our family room.
And I love this space
because I'm always setting it up
for whatever holiday it is
or if it's summer, I just have
lots of different fresh flowers here.
If it's a holiday, then I try to do something
so when you walk in, you immediately feel,
oh gosh, it's Christmas. This is so fun.
Then we go into the kitchen dining
and this space is just such a cozy, fun space
for us to entertain and have family gatherings.
I think the most important thing in this space to note
is our little crystal stars.
So these are the stars that I collect
in two different sizes for my children every year
so that they each have a collection
and they can hang them in their windows
or hang them from a chandelier themselves.
This is where we have most of our family gatherings
with our grandchildren or in-laws or family friends.
This big casual table.
In the center of this table
is all these sort of lovely silver balls.
And this is from my mother-in-law
has given me a silver ball
for every year we've been married.
That's a lot of silver balls.
On the table, rather than a full table setting,
we have just these little lovely trays
with candles and trees and a few little birds
kind of going along with our theme
but just sort of a subtle accent.
Over here we've got an antique sleigh
and all kinds of packages decorated.
And we've got some fun, unusual patterns
that I'm going to show you how to create later yourself
in my craft room.
And some fun little planters with narcissus.
And I'll also show you how to create
some super fun ones in my craft room
in just a little bit.
It's a narrow, long space
so that I have great storage at either end.
So this is kind of super great.
It's got pull-out shelves
and I house all kinds of linens and napkins
and big platters.
And if we're having a get-together or a party,
a lot of times this is my serving space.
So on this end of the room,
I designed it with this built-in
that was deeper on the bottom.
And again, it's got pull-out drawers
so that I can house linens.
And then the top is just all kinds of storage
for vases, water pitchers, dishes.
It's kind of fantastic storage
all the way to the ceiling, cake platters.
So I love it for that casual storage.
So now that you've seen the kitchen dining,
I'm going to share with you the kitchen.
So this kitchen space
is one that you can see we've really opened up
on all sides to this area,
the banquette in this direction
into the family room in this direction
and then the kitchen dining
that you just saw in this direction.
And when we did the remodel,
we replaced a giant island in the middle
that just took a while to eat up.
And this functions much easier for us
in our family.
We use this a lot of times to serve
and then cooking here.
And then we have this great banquette area
that we love to have breakfast
or our grandkids love to do projects here.
And you can see everybody outside
on the patio and the pool beyond.
This is family central for us
and there's almost always someone
sitting here at this banquette area.
So you're going to notice
if you've seen any of my Instagram posts
that for the season,
I actually replaced my slipcovers
on these chairs.
They're typically in the same floral pattern
that you see in this pillow
and in the trim on the draperies.
But for the Christmas season,
I replaced them with these large check covers
and then kept my same skirt.
So by adding this dark green,
adding a few dark green pillows,
I changed the look from being summer
to a holiday, more festive look.
So just very simple minor changes
going with all of my primary furniture
and decor,
but just a couple little adjustments
to sort of give me a fun holiday decor.
In the center,
I've got vases of all different sizes.
Again, I have my fun little mushrooms.
I'm kind of repeating
this silly little mushroom scheme throughout.
And I've mixed them with different vases
filled with flowers.
And the light bounces off of them
and it's just sort of super fun.
The blinds on the window
were actually custom
because they were so large.
And they are motorized
so that they can come up and down
quite easily.
But they were custom
because the size is so gigantic.
But they're sort of wonderful
to have in the morning light
if it gets intense.
And the windows all open up
to beyond, obviously.
This is kind of one of the things
I do often, too,
is this is a little...
It's serving the purpose
of a Christmas decoration,
but it's also a toy.
And so I love to have things
scattered about
that when my grandchildren come,
they discover and they can play with.
And so it's a little accessory,
but it's also a toy
and they are welcome
to play with it.
As big as this house is,
I'm always cognizant
of designing spaces with storage
and lots of storage.
And so, again, you can see
I've got storage for open shelves
for dishes, accessories, lighting,
and then also storage above.
So on this side
as well as the other side,
as well as underneath the banquette,
these lift up like a boat
and you can store.
I store Christmas dishes
and things in here
during the off season.
It's kind of storage everywhere.
One of my favorite things
on this side
is the little snowman
to the far right,
and that was one of my children
has made.
And it's super compatible
with my other little snowman
accessories over there,
all with silly faces
and all just sort of celebrating
the joyous holiday.
I'm always inspired
by creating an environment
that feels special
and that will delight
my grandchildren,
my children,
and even myself.
So anything that has
a sense of humor,
and especially if it's not
an obvious sense of humor
or an obvious thing
I'm trying to be funny,
then I love it.
So you will see around my house
little cast bronze mice,
and I just,
I think it's funny.
Just a little mouse
that's like sitting
or on the stair step
or behind the door.
And at first,
someone thinks,
oh my gosh, it's a mouse,
but then they say no.
It's actually a tiny sculpture.
I find that humorous.
Snowmen that are smiling
and next to the stove.
It's,
they're just little things
that sort of tickle me,
and so I think it,
I think they will,
other people too,
and even if they don't,
I guess I'm,
I'm pleased with myself
or tickled when I'm in the space,
and that's just kind of fun.
So now that you've seen
the kitchen,
we're going to head
into the family room,
and it's a joining room
open to the kitchen,
and when you're in the space,
you can enjoy the outside
and enjoy what's happening
in the kitchen as well.
So this space,
we did the same thing.
I replaced some of the floral pillows
and some of the kind of
chartreuse pillows
that I have in the summer
with some dark green accents,
and then I decorated my tree
accordingly with a little bit
more of the dark green
versus the summer chartreuse,
and it just changed the look
and made it feel a little bit
cozier and more Christmasy,
even though we're coastal
and open to the outdoors.
These little birds and nests
were some of the first ornaments
I ever bought,
and I was a single parent
with two little girls
and no money to buy
Christmas ornaments,
and so I went to the craft store
and bought all these little birds
and bird nests and pine cones,
and then even took the pine cones
and glued ribbon onto them,
and I still have those ornaments
to this day,
and I've used them every year
for more than 30 years,
and I still love them,
so I think this was
before anyone started
doing the natural scene,
but it was just
I could afford to do,
and then over the years,
I've added little glitter birds,
and this year, of course,
I added some mushrooms
and then some little fruit,
but basically,
I'm starting with what I've had
for years and years,
and still love it to this day.
So this space was completely
closed off to the outside.
There were two doors,
but you didn't feel connected
to the outside,
so by adding a porch
and opening it up
with this very large opening
with these custom-sized barn doors,
you now feel that
you're able to go inside and out,
and these doors are open
when it's December,
and they're open
every single day here,
so it's really kind of fantastic
in California weather.
The other thing that we did
is open up this.
This had two small openings
and a wall in between,
so it felt very separate
from the family room originally,
so this now you feel
that you're in the same space,
so it reads as one large room,
and then we also
closed off the main hallway,
so that now there's this private
sort of back stairway to the house,
and so this area all feels open,
but the stairway up
is not a grand staircase,
but more of a private.
This is our family area staircase,
so we love how that
makes all this function.
One of the challenges
of this space initially
because of all of the large openings
everywhere in the fireplace
was setting up seating,
of course,
and then also placement of TV,
so what I've got hidden here
is a pop-up TV,
so we've got a remote,
and this is a large anywhere here,
and everyone lays on the chaises
and the big wing chairs,
and it's kind of super comfy,
but the TV on a regular basis
is kind of hidden
and not the center focus of the room.
One of the things
I'm going to show you downstairs
in my craft room
is how to put together
a sweet little planter
that you can give as a gift
when you're going over for dinner,
so this is just,
we started with a simple planter,
and we just changed it
depending on our decor.
This one fits in my decor,
but I'll teach you
how to make a couple others
that might work better for yours.
I'm also going to show you
how to make fun paper.
Do you notice how this paper
matches my room exactly?
This may be something
that you like or that you don't like,
but for me,
I think it's super fun,
and I'll also show you
my little trick on that,
how to coordinate packages.
Coming from the kitchen
takes us into the dining library
and the living area
and the more formal spaces
of the house.
So here we are
in our dining library.
We've got storage behind
for all sorts of china and dishes,
a space that is cozy for eight
and then opens up to the outside.
In terms of decor in this space,
I just used a very simple greenery
and flowers in the middle of the table
and our little lovely fruit
and vegetable tree.
And of course,
our wine bottle has a fur coat.
This little lovely fruit tree
is just...
We've added leaves to it
to give it just a little metal tree.
We cut up a garland
and added these little leaves
to give it just a little more fluff.
And then I've just collected
these different ornaments over the years,
sort of all different fruits and vegetables,
and they're just sort of super charming,
I think.
So we could also use this
for a family dinner,
but it has to be
a smaller family dinner.
And usually when we have our kids
and grandkids,
we end up in the other room
because we actually...
It accommodates even more people.
So this is more, you know,
dinner party kind of room.
When I designed this space,
it was just a large rectangle,
so we opened it up to the outside
and added all these bookcases
and built-ins
and then divided the space
so that allowed us
storage on the other side.
So when you open up these,
this is all cabinetry
that we designed
to make this space
feel like a cozy library
instead of a big formal dining space.
And then when you go
inside this little door,
there's this awesome storage
for dishes and wine.
But of course,
we still have our doors
covered in a wallpaper
that looks like books.
It's so funny.
So we've been on some wine,
you know, trips
with a bunch of friends
and so we usually get some wine
and then we have...
People give us wine as gifts
and so we have a fair amount of wine
but we're actually...
We actually probably prefer
beer versus wine.
So as a designer,
in each space,
I usually try to have
something extra special.
And in this room,
its special piece
is this chandelier,
which is actually
very, very old
and it actually is
from the days when
you did light a room
with just candles.
So you can see
how stunning this is
in this space.
It just kind of really adds
the drama to the space.
So you can see
where we're about ready
to set up for
a table setting in here,
but we purposely
didn't do it for today's shoot
because we knew
we had so many other
Christmas decorations
to cover.
But stay tuned.
Follow us on Instagram
and we'll show you
all kinds of
Christmas table settings.
What I love most
about the holidays
is probably what
most of us love
and that's that
it usually provides
opportunity for all of us
to be together
with family and friends
and celebrate.
So that's what I love the most
is everyone getting together
and being together
and it's wonderful
to have a space
that can accommodate that.
So now we're moving into
the central hall,
the entryway
and the formal living room.
So on this oversized table,
again, I treat it
like an entryway
and like it sort of
to announce the holiday.
In this case, Christmas.
If you saw my prior video,
it was very Halloweenish.
Sometimes I'll just have
seasonal flowers
and books
and other accessories.
But right now,
it's got probably
one of my favorite trees
because it's got
sort of my special
little ornaments.
So notice how
it's off the ground.
No, little people
can knock things over,
and so I have things
that are a little more
treasurable.
Most of my things
are not that,
I don't worry about them
breaking,
but there's a couple things,
some ornaments that
from my parents
and just some funny ones
that I've collected
over the years.
I have everything from,
you know, the TV
to the butter stick
to a little airplane
that reminds me of my dad
who was a pilot.
Sort of all kinds of
a chandelier,
a funny whale,
things that have been
collected over the years
that are just
a little bit whimsical
and fun,
perhaps more fragile.
And then, of course,
this is one of my
other little design tricks.
I decorate a lot with boxes,
and these are boxes
that I pull out every year,
and they're super easy to wrap in
because they're already
covered in paper.
They untie,
and I can just put
the gifts inside.
It's just an easy,
simple way to wrap
and an easy way to decorate.
I use them,
you could see for various
stacking packages
and stacking accessories
on top of them,
and they just make
such a lovely composition,
and they're just so practical.
So this is the more
formal area of our house.
It's obviously
a great size living room.
This is a fun room
in that we've got
the fireplace
and different things
that I've collected
over the years,
and then again,
certainly very comfortable
upholstery,
so it's a comfortable room,
but just a larger room
and a little more formal,
but then again,
still open to the backyard,
outside,
and this was one of the things
that we did in the remodel
is open this all up
with these floor-to-ceiling
metal windows,
so it adds a little bit
of a modern look
and helps you appreciate
our pretty California weather
on the outside.
I've got several different
funny sort of antiques,
and of course,
I couldn't help myself
and added a wreath of ornaments
to this guy's head.
Of course, ornaments
and my packages again,
and almost every year,
I have these packages
actually filled with presents
for my kids and grandkids,
and so on Christmas morning,
everyone runs around
and collects what looks like
all the decor,
but there's really
presents inside.
So in this corner of the room,
I have this antique sleigh
that I bought years ago
at Round Top,
the antique festival in Texas,
and of course,
I had to have it reupholstered
in a fabric that coordinated
with my interior.
Every year,
we fill it with packages
and usually adorn it
with a bag of coal
for the naughties
and then lots of presents
all around it.
So because we are
so close to the coast
and you can see the ocean
from outside the windows,
I've got this great collection
of shells and starfish
and kind of super fun coral.
I typically have these
kind of all year round.
Leaving the formal living room
and walking into the foyer,
I want to share with you
our little lovely shelf
and how we've just
decorated it minimally
with flowers
and sparkly garland
and a little wreath
and an angel.
Sort of very simple.
And then also in this corner,
we've got a smaller tree
that's got all these bubbles
filled with all kinds of feathers.
So just very subtle
and not a strong focal point.
So let me take you upstairs
and share with you
what we did
in our master sitting area.
So now we're in the stair landing
before you get to the master area
and the other bedrooms.
And in this area,
I think it's fun to point out
that stockings don't always
have to be on a mantle.
And in this case,
we just hung them here
in the stairway.
These are little needle point
stockings that I've done
for each of the kids
as they were growing up.
And a smaller tree
that kind of looks great
coming through the main entry
of the house.
So now we're going to transition
from the upstairs landing
to the primary bedroom sitting area.
And so this was a space
that when I redid
the house and the floor plan
when kids went off to college,
we turned this into
a library sitting area
for the primary bedroom.
And it turns out
that this is a space
that we use every single day.
It's one of our favorite spaces.
This was actually a deck
that I enclosed
and made into a sitting area.
So we've got a lovely ottoman
that we store linens in
and a little sectional
that was made specifically
for this spot.
And this is just an area
that again is an entryway
I set up with seasonal flowers
or in this case,
my holiday decor.
Lots of storage again down below
and lots of book storage
because we love to read
in this family.
On this table,
this was actually
an old dining table.
And I put a mirror on the top.
I use it for, like I said,
my seasonal flowers
or in this case,
the holiday decor.
So I've got all of these
little collected shell trees
and boxes, packages,
and of course, fresh flowers.
So this is my little vanity area.
And this was an area
that again was a tiny little deck
that was not terribly usable.
And so I made it into
this great little vanity area
that I use every day.
I built storage on either side
that's mirrored
And then had a piece,
a vanity piece made
that houses both makeup
and hair dryer
and things like that.
Of course, I've got my
little lovely praying angels
that I converted to lamps.
They remind me to
say my prayers every day.
And pictures of my grandchildren.
And again, a mirrored top
that sort of reflects the light
from the windows.
And a pretty view beyond.
I have always been a designer.
This is what I studied in college.
It's what I've studied
throughout my life.
And it's always been my profession.
And I kind of knew it had to be
when every time I'd pick up
an architectural digest,
I just wanted to,
I was so energized.
I wanted to run around the block.
So it's been a career
that has just suited me so well.
I've had a business for years
and been able to have
some flexibility around
children and family.
And I've loved it.
I've done all kinds of styles
all over the country
with all kinds of clients.
So it's always creative.
There's always new product.
And I love the business aspect as well.
So it's been a really good fit
for me in my life.
So now you've seen
most of the house.
But I'm going to take you
downstairs to my craft room.
A room that I use
almost every day.
So this is my basement
underground garage craft room.
So I had this awkward corner
in my garage.
And I converted it
to this craft room.
I repurposed my island
from above in the kitchen.
Took the marble top off of it
and put a wood top
and painted it.
Poly coated my floors
and did all sorts of
built-ins everywhere
to create a craft room
that I use for wrapping
and all kinds of craft storage
and actually making crafts too.
I've got room on the back side
if you want to sit on a stool
and work on different projects.
And it's a great place
to wrap scissors, tape.
Things are right where you need them.
Wrapping papers on big rolls
in the back.
And then all sorts of things
stored in the clear boxes.
So this space was designed
to accommodate these plastic bins
that could easily be taken out
and put on the counter
and use whatever craft you're doing
or also be taken upstairs
if it was a kid's craft
and you wanted to do it
at the banquette upstairs.
And then I have all these
little narrow drawers
that house all kinds of
stationary and craft items.
This pull-out,
because it gets a little bit deeper here,
for glitter and glue
and other storage
for small different kinds of wax twine
that you might use for beading.
We've got storage
for more wrapping paper here.
Craft books here.
So it's a fantastic space
to do any kind of craft
that you like to do.
And speaking of crafts,
let me show you a couple things
that I talked about upstairs
in terms of making a couple things
that I actually made down here
in my craft room.
So now I'm going to show you
how to put together
one of these little hostess gift planters.
Here's two different styles,
and we're going to make yet
a third style today.
So these are the things
that I talked about upstairs,
and I'm going to show you quickly
how,if you buy just a simple little planter
with these bulbs and ivy
from Trader Joe's,
you can turn it into something
that feels like a charming hostess gift.
So the way we started with this
is I kind of looked at
where was sort of the front
and the best visible side.
And I know with this guy,
I'm going to put a little nest,
and all of these things
are available at a craft store
and a little bird.
You could do all kinds of things.
You could put a little Santa.
You could put an ornament,
some other ornament.
But this looks like the perfect spot
to position my little bird.
And then, of course,
I'm going to make this planter
a little more neutral.
So maybe green is not your color
for your interior,
or maybe red and white is not,
or for your hostess.
Here's a way to make something
that's a little more neutral
and a little more
that would kind of go
almost in any setting.
So all we did here is
we've got ribbon wrapped around.
And so in this case,
we want to make sure
we've got plenty of ribbon
to wrap and tie in the front.
So I'm going to wrap around
and kind of guess my length,
maybe cut a little bit too long.
And then what I've done,
and you can use a spray,
but, of course,
I try not to use the spray adhesive
on my plants
because it's not healthy for them.
And so here's just a little bit
of generic glue.
We put that on the sides
all the way around.
And this is maybe not quite
as easy as spraying,
but then I don't have to worry
about sort of hurting my plants.
I put it partway in the front.
And this is this
great little craft glue.
I like to buy these
little small tubes
because then you can use them
before they kind of go bad.
Put it all the way around.
And then I position my,
position my ribbon at the top.
I press firmly and tightly around.
Pull it to the front.
Pull it front.
Pull it tightly in the front.
And then here,
this is where I use
one of these little sticks
with wire attached.
You can buy this
at any sort of craft or floral store.
I poke it in the very front.
And then when I knot my ribbon,
I'm going to get this guy
on there tight.
And when I do my knot,
I can pull it up
and post it on my little
spike in the middle.
But now my knot is at the front.
I can do a little bow.
Or if we don't want a bow
and we just want a knot,
that might be simpler on this guy.
We'll angle our ribbon.
Angle our ribbon on this side.
Okay.
We're going to adjust our little ribbon.
Adjust our little bird.
And sometimes you need to add
a little bit more moss.
Sometimes these come with moss
and sometimes they don't.
And so if not,
you can just apply
a little more moss to the top.
Make it look a little bit,
a little bit perkier,
a little more color.
And give this guy
a little bit here.
And then the other thing we can do
that we've done,
like in this one,
is we added a little bit
of this floral
and we've also added,
we've also added some ornaments.
So in this case,
we might add
just a few of these
little tiny ornaments,
also available at a craft store,
that just add this little spark of color.
And we're just poking them in.
You could sort of do
any kind of arrangement you want,
wherever you feel like you need
just a little bit,
a touch of glitter.
And then the other thing I like to do
is then attach
a fun little card,
maybe something you've also made
or something that you just have
and you've printed,
had printed
and it ties on the front,
like this.
Sort of a sweet little,
a sweet little personalized gift
that you can make for your hostess
and if you know,
if you know their decor
and their colors,
then you can,
you can make it to match their house,
which would make it extra personal.
So,
and I usually try to use
several different kinds of ribbons.
So the ribbon to tie,
then the ribbon to tie on,
on the little name tag.
So there we go.
Three different kind of looks.
Each have a bird.
They have a different kind of bird.
You could use a Santa.
You can use all kinds of different ornaments
or ribbon,
multiples of,
but it ends up making
just a fun little hostess gift
that you,
that you made yourself
and that hopefully then works
with your,
your hostess's decor.
Well,
I'd like to share with you
one of my fun little wrapping tricks.
So on these pretty packages
that you could see,
that you saw upstairs
on our tour,
I pointed out how this fabric
or how this particular paper
matched my fabric
and how I had done that.
And so I want to show you
what I did exactly.
So here's my print.
Here's my original linen fabric,
sort of lovely old classic print.
And I took it to my reprographics place
where I have my plans printed
and asked them to blow it up
and print me a copy,
an architectural paper.
So here it is blown up
and it makes this wonderful graphic.
And one of the things
I like best about it
is that you actually can see
every single thread
of how it's woven.
So it ends up having
very much a fabric feel.
So I mixed this in
with my other,
my other packages and ribbons
and I felt like it obviously
matches my decor
but was really sort of super lovely.
In another spot
that we also toured upstairs,
I did the exact same thing
with a totally different look.
So here we are with an Indian print,
an Indian block print fabric.
So here's the original fabric
and this is a block print
and here's the original size of it.
And then blown up,
obviously it made this great big flower
and I used,
I reused ribbon that I had before,
put a little pine cone on top
and a Santa.
Look what a lovely,
unusual, unique print we have.
On another example,
same thing,
fabric blown up,
Indian block print
and here it is
kind of super large
and I'm sure you could have it
done the same size too.
I blew it up
and thought it made it very dramatic.
I tied it with twine.
Again, you can see
the weave of the fabric
that I just think
makes it super interesting.
I tied a mushroom on top
because of course
we're going with mushrooms these days
and put this fun little package on top
that I could put a little prize in
and yet another package on top of it
and we get a totally different look,
but a look that matches
our space in our room.
So anyone can do this.
You can even use your copier.
I've done that
to reproduce my own
sort of smaller package,
smaller package wrapping paper
on an 8 1⁄2 by 11,
but when you go to a reprographic store,
you can get a much bigger print
and a much bigger sheet
that actually works better for wrapping.
When I think of home,
I think of,
and this home in particular,
I can't help see my girls
and all of their cheerleading friends,
12 or 15 of them,
you know, running through the house
and piling in the pantry
and I see my son riding his scooter,
finding these circular patterns in the house
and turning the corners on his scooter.
It's family memories
where we all continue to grow
and love each other.
Thanks so much for coming Homeworthy
