Desert Plateau House | A Blackened-Wood Modern Retreat Overlooking Coachella Valley

Set on a dramatic rocky desert plateau outside Palm Desert, this single-family residence is tightly nestled among massive boulders, with panoramic views of the Coachella Valley and the San Jacinto Mountain Range. Designed to feel grounded yet sculptural, the home uses a bold yet quiet material palette that contrasts beautifully with the desert’s sun-washed tones.

The exterior features blackened acetylated pine siding, treated through burning, wire-brushing, staining, and sealing to achieve a richly textured, bug-resistant, and climate-stable finish. Inside, the house unfolds as a warm, durable collage of concrete, wood, stone, and steel, creating a soulful and protective atmosphere within the rugged environment.

The architecture is organized as a triptych:
• A floating square roof plane that offers shade, frames the sky through a single carved aperture, and protects the outdoor pool terrace.
• A series of seven wooden programmatic volumes, conceived as a single mass that splits apart to form views, passages, and a central void.
• Two parallel concrete walls guiding visitors from the garage toward the glazed entry, dramatically framing the dining room and the sweeping valley beyond.

At the heart of the layout, the carved central void becomes the entry and dining area, acting as the meeting point between public and private spaces. Every element of the design enhances the experience of the surrounding terrain, capturing the raw power of the desert while offering a warm, modern sanctuary.
