Craftory: Paper Bag Kite

[Music] welcome to craftory by prageru kids crafts history and your questions i'm jill and today we're making a diy kite out of a paper bag in honor of benjamin franklin's many contributions to america here's what you'll need a paper lunch bag art supplies to decorate the bag i'm using markers and craft paint but you can use anything like crayons stickers whatever you want a piece of yarn or sturdy string some tape and craft sticks you can find these at any craft store or online ready okay let's get started oh of course we've got a question who is benjamin franklin and what does he have to do with a kite oh okay you got me lots to talk about here i'll start with the first part of your question ben franklin is considered one of america's most important founding fathers ben franklin never served as president but he did a lot ben franklin was a diplomat a publisher an inventor a scientist and his face is on our 100 dollar bill besides helping to write our declaration of independence and the u.s constitution ben franklin successfully ended america's revolutionary war by negotiating the treaty of paris in 1783. he also served as the united states first postmaster general as a publisher ben franklin was famous for writing his poor richards almanac reading material with weather forecasts poetry and thoughts like early to bed early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise as an inventor he created the franklin stove bifocal eyeglasses a strange instrument called an harmonica and some say he even invented the rocking chair i bet you want to know where the kite comes in though right well let's start making ours and i'll tell you let's start with attaching streamers to the end of our kite so it looks fun when it blows in the wind we got our paper bag and i'm just going to use regular streamers here cut them up into different sizes [Music] red white and blue is always fun [Music] now i'm just going to tape these streamers to the inside of our bag easy right [Music] all right i'm good with these streamers or you let's paint it now i've got stencils but you can do whatever you want helping hands [Music] while this dries let me tell you about benjamin franklin's kite remember how i said he was also a scientist in 1752 ben franklin conducted an experiment in the rain to show everyone that lightning was in fact electricity he made a kite attached a wire to the top and a hemp string and a silk string to the bottom he then attached a metal key to the bottom of the hem string to see if it would conduct an electrical charge to the key after flying his kite for a bit he touched the key and felt a shock and concluded that lightning must be electricity soon after that he invented the lightning rod which protects buildings from becoming damaged if they're struck by lightning he's also credited with coming up with many electricity related terms that we still say today like battery charge and electrify almost done now let's put our string on our kite take your string cut it this long [Music] tie it to one of your craft sticks [Music] now take your kite and you're going to cut a small hole at the very top you're going to lace this end of the string through the inside of your bag and out the top [Music] when you pull the string through the craft stick on the inside will keep the string from coming out when you fly the kite our paperback kite ben franklin was very talented and used his talents to honor life liberty and the pursuit of happiness for our united states of america now when you fly your kite you can think of him we hope you had fun if you've got ideas or questions for our next craftery send them our way keep crafting keep learning and keep celebrating land of the free and home of the brave anybody know if it's windy outside let's go thank you for watching this video to keep prageru videos free please consider making a tax deductible donation
