Kilchurn Castle - The Campbell Stronghold. #scottishcastles #castlesofscotland
Sitting upon the shores of Loch Awe in Argyll, Kilchurn Castle was the seat of the Campbells of Glenorchy, the most powerful cadet branch of the Clan Campbell.
Masters of political positioning, the Glenorchy Campbells increased their territory throughout the 1600s - mostly at the cost of the MacGregor Clan.
Playing both sides in the troubles arising from the Jacobite cause - and exponential gains socially, placed the title of the Earldom of Breadalbane and Holland upon the family and saw their power almost equal the Duke of Argyll’s.
Sir Ewen Cameron of Lochiel was born at the castle.
The castle was adapted to allow a garrison for 200 men - Campbell planned to sell it to the government - but Fort William was instead developed. The castle was briefly garrisoned by government troops during the Rising of 1745 - with Bonnie Prince Charlie’s failed attempt to regain the crown.
After this the castle - like the Jacobite cause - crumbled slowly into history.
Kilchurn now sits in the care of Historic Environment Scotland.
