BYD Collapse Shocks China: Three Dead as “Tofu Construction” Exposed
"Recently, a structural collapse at a BYD expansion project in the Zhengzhou Airport Economic Zone, Henan Province, killed three workers and reignited nationwide anger over China’s growing wave of “tofu projects”—cheap, fragile, and dangerously rushed construction. Just days later, on November 17th, a ceiling inside a newly opened Xi’an shopping mall suddenly crashed down, injuring eight customers, further fueling public outrage over the rise of tofu-style infrastructure across the country.
According to The Paper, the Henan Provincial Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development confirmed that on November 15th, Phase One of the Zhengzhou Airport Economic Zone New Energy Components Industrial Park (DK5 fifth batch) suffered a catastrophic structural failure, resulting in three deaths.
