Debbie loved spending time with her grandma.
One afternoon, after helping in the kitchen,
she looked out of the window and saw a man watering his garden.
Curious, she asked who it was.
Grandma smiled and said,
That's my neighbor, Mr. Lee.
Debbie thought for a moment.
A neighbor?
Is that just the people who live next door,
like Mrs. Brown with the big dog or Mr. Lee who grows tomatoes?
Grandma chuggled gently.
That's a wonderful question, Debbie.
You know, someone once asked Jesus the very same thing
and his answer was a story.
The story of the Good Samaritan.
Debbie's eyes lit up.
Ooh, tell me grandma.
So grandma began.
One day, Jesus was teaching a crowd when a lawyer stood up
and tried to test him with a tricky question.
Teacher, the man asked,
What must I do to have eternal life?
Jesus turned the question back on him.
What is written in the law?
How do you read it?
The lawyer replied confidently,
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind
and love your neighbor as yourself.
Jesus nodded.
You've answered correctly.
Do this and you will live.
But the lawyer wanted to push further.
And who exactly is my neighbor?
He asked.
So Jesus told a story.
A man was traveling down the hot rocky road from Jerusalem to Jericho.
Suddenly, thieves jumped out, attacked him,
tore his clothes, and left him badly hurt on the side of the road.
Not long after, a priest came by.
He saw the man, but quickly crossed to the other side, hurrying away.
Soon after, a Levite, a temple helper, also came along.
He looked at the wounded man, but decided it was too dangerous to stop.
He too walked away.
Finally, a Samaritan came down the road.
Now, everyone listening knew that Jews and Samaritans were enemies.
No one expected the Samaritan to help.
But instead of passing by, he stopped.
He climbed off his donkey, cleaned the man's wounds with oil and wine,
and gently wrapped them in bandages.
Then he lifted the man onto his donkey, carried him to an inn,
and cared for him through the night.
The next morning, the Samaritan gave the innkeeper two silver coins and said,
Please take care of him.
If you spend more, I'll repay you when I return.
Then he went on his way, leaving the man safe and cared for.
When Jesus finished the story, he looked at the lawyer and asked,
Now tell me, who was a neighbor to the man who fell among thieves?
The lawyer lowered his voice and answered,
The one who showed mercy.
That's right, Jesus said.
Now go and do the same.
Debbie sat quietly, thinking.
Then she said,
So, Grandma, my neighbor isn't just Mrs. Brown or Mr. Lee.
A neighbor is anyone who needs my help, even if they're different from me.
Grandma smiled and hugged her.
That's exactly right, Debbie.
Being a good neighbor means showing kindness and mercy to anyone in need.
Debbie grinned wide.
Then I want to be like the good Samaritan.
Next time I see someone who needs help, I'll be the one to stop.
And Grandma whispered warmly,
That's my girl.
Who is my neighbor? Tell me who.
Is it someone far or someone new?
The one who helps, the one who stays.
That's my neighbor in every way.
First came a priest, he turned his eyes.
Walked right past, heard the cries.
Next came another, just the same.
No one stopped, no one came.
Who will stop? Who will care?
Who will see him lying there?
Who is my neighbor? Tell me who.
Is it someone far or someone new?
The one who helps, the one who stays.
That's my neighbor in every way.
Then came the Samaritan, he turned his eyes.
Came near to help, heard the cries.
Gave a helping hand, saved the day.
Cleaned his wounds, gave him care.
Who is my neighbor? Tell me who.
Is it someone far or someone new?
The one who helps, the one who stays.
That's my neighbor in every way.
Who is my neighbor? Tell me who.
Is it someone far or someone new?
The one who helps, the one who stays.
That's my neighbor in every way.
