Kendall Jenner Tequila: Celebrities In The Alcohol Industry | Shark Tank's Daymond John on TMZ LIVE
10 Video Views·Nov 22, 2025
It's Daymond John from Shark Tank and FUBU here! I joined TMZ LIVE to "Follow the Money" of the Kendall Jenner Tequila Brand 818. Alcohol is a TOUGH industry to break into, and Kendall Jenner seems to be building her brand despite the controversy. We're talking marketing, sales and exit strategies for entrepreneurs- check it out!
I've seen so many brands and so many celebrities just stamp their name on something and put
it out and they're going to sell.
It doesn't happen.
Welcome back to TMZ Live.
Kendall Jenner has made huge headlines this week.
Maybe some of them not for the reasons she would like, but the fact of the matter is
her 818 tequila, apparently I had some before we started this segment, her 818 tequila look
has won awards.
It's doing well, but, and she's marketing this.
Absolutely.
So, the question is, with the controversy this week, does it change her business plan?
And also, just generally, how do celebrities go from saying, huh, I'd like to do a tequila
to making a billion dollars?
What I find interesting is, what's the endgame?
How do you get out of it?
Do you get out of it?
I'm really interested in this.
We are following the money, which means we're bringing in our buddy, Damon John from Shark
Tank.
Damon, welcome back, man.
How you doing?
What's up, guys?
Everything's good.
How you guys doing?
We're good.
So, I think she's killing it.
I mean, she rented a truck in L.A., she's driving around, she's serving it at parties,
and what she's doing, she's building the brand.
We're watching her build a brand from nothing into something really big.
So how does it work?
I mean, how does a celebrity go from an idea to something like this, where it comes to
fruition and then make a fortune?
Listen, you know what?
We've talked about the Kardashians two separate times on Follow the Money.
One was them moving from the show to own their own show.
The next one is Kim at $1.4, $1.6 billion valuation.
They are on brand, they are very focused business women, and we want to follow the money right
now.
Listen, to break somebody's spending habit or buying habit of a liquor is very hard.
You want to break somebody off of your Grey Goose or whatever the case is, they can't
taste it either, but they have to build this love and this passion that they want to try
it, and she is tapping into her number one resource, herself.
And you are bringing the awareness, and people are going to want to do this.
And everybody should learn here, because I want our followers on TMZ to follow the money.
Just remember, no matter what you do, somebody's going to hate, right?
And no matter what you do, you tap into your resource, and you have one hand, and as long
as you are in the brand and you can sleep at night, you got to do that.
And that's what she's doing.
She's showing that she's rolling up her sleeves.
She's going to Mexico.
She's driving that.
I've seen so many brands and so many celebrities just stamp their name on something and put
it out, and they're going to sell.
It doesn't happen.
And you've seen Clooney do this, and Rock do this with tequila.
Let's not talk about, you know, appropriation, because a woman should be able to do the same
thing a man should do, and she's building that brand, and she's going to follow through
with it.
That's why we're talking about her right now.
Damon, what's the plan when you start out?
Like, say you're Kendall Jenner.
What's your business plan?
Is this a three-year, five-year, and what's your goal?
You know, you say that we're going to build this for three years, and then by the fourth
year, we start looking to sell it.
How does that work?
You should never look to open a brand and already think about your exit.
What you should be doing is, and I'm sure she did this, this is why they are so successful.
She probably was a tequila drinker for years and really enjoyed it, and said, this is something
that I think I can get behind because I can talk about it on my off time, I can talk about
it on my on time.
Let me get a great distributor.
Let's come up with a campaign, because again, as we all know, there's 50 different liquor
brands launched every year, and most of them don't work.
And then she says, how can I over-deliver to my customer?
It's all about the end date.
It's about the customer.
When the big department stores didn't want me, I made sure that I over-delivered to the
stores in the hood.
And those stores in the hood were the ones who were my biggest advocates.
And that's what you do.
You don't look at an exit.
When you have somebody who only they're thinking about is an exit, when they start, they usually
never get the exit.
That is so smart.
That is so right on.
It's interesting, Damon, because I've always believed in this concept of look for a hole
in the market and fill it.
And when you look at the Kardashian family, they are steeped in beauty products.
And the fact that she made a hard left into tequila and then kind of carved out her own
area, it's kind of brilliant.
It is.
And she probably said, there's a younger generation who knows me because the older generation
probably knows somebody else.
The younger generation of young women, because of course, if you get women to drink something,
it's going to be better.
Why?
Because the men are going to want to buy them drinks.
They're going to communicate more about it.
And she probably said, let me look at the younger generation who respects and values
me.
This is something that I love and let's put it out there.
And she did find an opportunity to market.
Remember, there's nothing new in the world.
It's just always a new form of delivery, a new customer.
I mean, Facebook is still a nasty chain letter.
And I swear to you, the snug is just a blanket.
It just has two holes in it.
You have to find new customers.
Before we leave you, we've got to ask you something, because Charles and I were talking
about you today, that Angelina Jolie is doing this thing with Nat Geo with bees.
Yesterday was National Bee Day.
We're telling you this, but I'm sure you knew this.
I did not know you were a bee guy.
I am.
I have over a million and a half bees on my property.
I have my own honey that I give away to friends.
I've named only half of the bees, but trust me, 100,000 of them were named Barbara, 100,000
named Kevin, 100,000 named Mark.
But absolutely, listen, if the pollinators go away, we probably won't have more than
five years left on this planet, because they are really crucial, they are important.
And I learned about it on Shark Tank, and that's how I ended up becoming a bee farmer
or a bee collector or whatever you want to call me.
So I've got to ask you a question that I always think about when I see people, see beekeepers
and bee farmers.
How often do you get stung, or have you not been stung at all while doing your bee farming?
I've never been stung, but I got to tell you, I'm kind of like a prissy bee farmer.
I have a guy come and help me do everything, and I look outside, and I look over the fence
with a camera going, you see me?
I'm beekeeping.
Oh my God.
I'm a keeper, 100.
Hey, Damon, thanks so much for being with us, man.
Thanks, Damon.
Thank you, guys.
We'll see you next week.
