Fight for Influence in Mineral-Rich Nations: US vs China
The U.S. and China are doubling down on competing for influence over mineral rich countries in Africa and central Asia.
On Thursday, Chinese premier Li Qiang signed an agreement worth over $1 billion dollars with Zambia and Tanzania.
Zambia is the second largest producer of copper in Africa.
The deal would modernize a railway that allows China to reach Zambia's vast copper deposits.
The railway is widely seen as a counter to the Lobito corridor -- a railway corridor that makes it easier for the U.S. to access critical minerals in Africa. Li Qiang is the first Chinese premier to visit Zambia in 28 years.
It comes three days after Donald Trump Junior's meeting with Zambia’s president during his private vacation.
Zambia’s president affirmed his commitment to fostering U.S.-Zambia relations.
