There's a super simple pronunciation trick
that helped me and hundreds of my students
to sound more natural and gain confidence in Spanish.
Let's see it now, step by step,
so that you can also do the same.
To start, I want you to say these words out loud
and pay attention to how you pronounce them.
Very good. Did you notice something?
If English is your first language,
it's likely that you added an extra sound
in these sentences.
Let's see, what does this mean?
In English, we use invisible sounds,
that is, sounds that we don't write
to connect words.
They're like trampolines,
small trampolines that we use
to go from one word to another.
And many times, that extra sound
sounds like ya.
For example, if we say
fast, we add an invisible ya
and we say
If we say
also fast, we add an invisible ya
and we say
And since we do this in English,
we also do it unintentionally in Spanish.
This means that we end up pronouncing
these sentences like this.
In other words, we apply our English habit
of using that invisible sound
to connect two words.
In this case, a sound ya.
To correct it,
in theory, you only have to eliminate
the sound ya and say
But in practice, when you're trying to speak
and thinking about a thousand things at the same time,
it doesn't always work.
Because our pronunciation habits
are very rooted.
It's muscle memory.
And we put a sound ya again
when we stop paying attention
to pronunciation.
That's why, many times, we need
a second step,
which is to eliminate the first e
of the sentence.
So, imagine it like this.
And if you listen carefully to native speakers,
you'll see that they rarely pronounce
the two complete sounds.
By the way, if you want to keep practicing
all this, pronunciation,
I have a pronunciation guide
that you can download for free
in the description below.
The next step is to make all this
become automatic
so that you don't have to think about it.
A piece of advice that I like to share
with my students,
although the advice isn't originally mine,
but I don't remember
where I first heard it.
The advice is this.
When you finally discover a new sound,
that is, when you finally manage to make
the new sound,
compare it immediately
with the other sound.
That is, you jump from one pronunciation
to another,
paying attention to the difference.
And I also recommend that you record,
that you record yourself,
if you can, with your phone.
So, the practice looks like this.
Now, let's put these examples
in longer sentences
and pronounce them out loud
with me now.
No entiendo lo que él dijo.
Este es mi auto.
Now you have an easy and effective exercise
to sound and, above all,
to feel more natural
speaking Spanish.
But if you don't practice conversation,
these tips won't help you much.
You'll never feel really safe
when you speak Spanish.
So, watch this video now
to improve your fluency
with a simple, practical and effective technique.
