Actor Austin Butler (Caught Stealing, Elvis) opens up on the subway about his hottest takes, from bachelor parties to embarrassment as a life philosophy. He also laughs about people still asking him about his Elvis voice, tells the story of dancing at a Bad Bunny concert in Puerto Rico with director Darren Aronofsky, and talks about the weirdness of fame, water, and why making a fool of yourself might be the best thing you can do.
So what's your take?
I don't think it's fair that I've never been invited to a bachelor party.
100% agree.
Thank you.
I think that's a damn shame.
Thank you.
You've never been invited to a bachelor party?
No, I've never been invited.
And it seems like such a fun time.
It is a fun time.
I've been to many.
Have you been to a lot?
I've been to six.
You look like a guy who's been invited.
Which means you think I look fun.
You look really fun.
Well, this is the problem.
You wear your sunglasses.
I do.
On the subway.
It's so cool.
This is the problem about being invited to a bachelor party.
I've been invited as a groomsman, but I've never been a best man.
Have you given a speech to anybody?
No.
I'm not allowed.
I feel like you've given a really good speech, though.
I sang a song once.
Would you be my best man?
I would love to be your best man.
Why do you think you've never been invited to a bachelor party?
You seem like a fun guy.
I like to think I'm a fun guy.
You look like a classic fun guy in the sense that in the 90s, on television, there would
be like the cool neighbor who lives in the van.
Yeah, I'm the guy who lives in a van.
Yeah, you're the cool van neighbor.
Not a bully, but maybe used to be a bully.
Yeah, yeah.
I'm the bully who now lives in a van.
Were you ever a bully?
No.
No, no, no.
You don't get bullied?
I always like to protect the kids that were bullied.
Same here.
Did you?
Yes.
The only times I ever got in fights were over that.
Every once in a while, I would get bullied, which I just realized.
Yeah, because I was ESL.
English as a second language.
Oh, English as a second language.
Okay, thank you.
Thank you.
I don't get out much.
I've never been invited to a bachelor party.
Well, no.
Here's what's crazy, though, about memory.
I was thinking about when I got bullied, and I was like, why was I getting bullied?
And then I realized, oh, I didn't speak English.
Wow.
But I've grown up.
Until what age?
Until like, I don't know, like five, six?
Where'd you grow up?
Minnesota.
Minnesota?
Yeah.
Really?
How long were you in Minnesota before you moved to New York?
This is my interview, bro.
I like interviewing you.
You're flipping it on me.
I'm not telling you anything.
So you want to get close to me.
I know what you're trying to do.
You want to get close to me.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Butter you up.
Exactly.
This is what I'm going for.
I'm going to have a bachelor party.
What do you think we're going to do?
I think we're going to go to Ireland.
I've never been to Ireland.
Me neither.
I want to drive around Ireland, go to pubs.
I love this.
And then I want to drive to Scotland and see Stonehenge with the boys.
That's in Scotland?
I think it's in Scotland.
No.
Is it in Scotland?
It's in England.
Wait, Stonehenge?
Yeah, it's in Scotland.
Is it in Scotland?
I've been there.
What do you mean you've been there?
I was working in London, and yeah, we went on this long walk.
Did you see Stonehenge?
Yeah, from across the freeway.
There's a freeway?
There's a freeway right there.
Bro, I don't know.
You were probably a Disneyland version.
You know, I went into this not knowing what your vibe was going to be.
Yeah.
I thought you were going to be really serious.
Did you?
Yeah.
What did you actually think?
I was like, he's probably cool.
But I was like, all right, what movies has he been in?
I saw The Bike Riders.
I saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
I saw the trailer for the new movie.
And I was like, what can I gather from this guy?
And what I realized is that all of the roles are so different, and all of the work is so
different, that I was like, I really don't know anything about this guy.
I think he's just like a serious guy, but I don't know.
We were kind of talking about it before the camera started rolling.
I'm really shy.
You're a shy guy.
Yeah, naturally I'm very shy.
The other take that I was thinking about was embarrassment is an underexplored emotion.
Yes.
This idea of embarrassment being the thing that often keeps us from trying new things
or from expressing ourselves, or the fear of embarrassment, the fear of being judged
socially.
I think many men have not done something because they're afraid of it.
You don't ask the girl out because you're nervous.
Oh, we've got to get off.
Oh, okay.
All right.
How do you handle feeling judged by others?
I'm not afraid of embarrassment.
And I think that comes from feeling.
Do you get the feeling or the little bit of, like the tinge of concern?
I think I've overcome it.
I think I've just fully overcome it.
I don't get embarrassed.
I really don't.
I embarrass myself.
I accept it, but I don't feel embarrassed.
Somebody very close to me.
I was at a party once, and I was dancing, and they said embarrassment is an underexplored
emotion.
Go out there and make a fool of yourself.
Wow.
And things like that.
That's really a good ******* mantra.
To just go for it.
Like feel that feeling, the fear of cringe.
That's really good.
And then go out there and do it.
Dude, that's really good.
Because everything you want is on the other side of that.
I don't know if it's such a subject now.
There's been so much about the Elvis thing, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Did you ever feel like you were doing too much?
Because, I mean, the role was incredible.
You did a completely different transformation.
You mean while filming or after?
No, after.
And then people were like, oh, the voice, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
I knew that I just was doing my best through the whole thing.
But it is, I'd be lying if I said that it didn't, when people talk about something as
personal as your voice, how it then makes me go, wait, am I not being authentic?
I value honesty and authenticity so much.
And then you start questioning that.
But a lot of it is like, even when I was doing the movie, I was afraid that people were not going to like it.
They were going to think I didn't do a good job.
And then you get done with it and they're like, oh, you sound too...
So you realize you can't be focusing so much on what other people think.
Like, just do what you love.
Yeah.
What was it saying again?
Embarrassment is an underexplored emotion.
Go out there and make a fool of yourself.
That's really good.
Those are words to live by.
Yeah, Baz Luhrmann said that.
I have a mantra.
Do what's right right now.
I made that up myself.
That's really good.
So tell me more about that.
So do what's right right now.
Because what happens is people fall into this trap of, okay, so if I do this, then this
happens and then this happens and then I'll end up in failure.
Or if I do this and then this doesn't work out and blah, blah, blah.
And people try to like plot all this ---- out.
But you know, the only thing you can do is what the next step.
That's so true.
Like you can have like a goal.
But the steps to get to that goal are oftentimes not the steps that you think they're going
to be.
Do the next right thing.
Yeah.
Do the next right thing.
Yeah.
Do what's right right now.
Man, I can fall into that.
Like playing chess in my mind and trying to figure out like, well, this move means that
and that means that.
And I love that.
Yeah.
Do what's right right now.
So the new movie.
It's Darren Aronofsky.
I saw Requiem for a Dream when I was 12 or 13.
Far too young to see that movie.
Yeah.
But it impacted me a lot.
Watching Black Swan.
Do you see it young as well?
I saw it young.
Yeah.
Right?
And I was like, I'm probably not going to do any drugs.
Yeah.
It keeps you straight edge, doesn't it?
So then I then saw Black Swan, The Wrestler.
And then around the time of The Whale, he and I were in a lot of the same rooms.
And I've been wanting to work with him since I was a kid.
Of course.
And so he had this film that was very personal to him because he grew up in New York.
It takes place in the 90s in New York.
And it's in the spirit of a lot of these films of the 70s that we love so much, like After Hours.
I love it.
Right?
How great is that movie?
And we have Griffin Dunn, who's in After Hours.
He's in our film.
Oh, amazing.
He plays the guy who owns the bar that I work at.
Oh, that's amazing.
And we got Action Bronson.
We have Zoe Kravitz, Regina King, Matt Smith.
It's just a great group of people.
Incredible.
And yeah, I play a guy who's just thrust into a nightmare.
Chaos.
And I'm trying to do my best to keep myself and all the people I love alive.
The trailer looks incredible.
It's fun.
I'll be there.
I hope so.
Opening night.
Yeah, you better.
I will.
I wonder if you could come to the premiere.
We're going to do it in New York.
You want?
Hey, hey.
And then we'll go to Ireland.
Tell the press person.
Yeah.
I want to come to the premiere.
No, Alex is around here somewhere.
I saw that you went to Puerto Rico recently.
Yes, I did.
And you went to Puerto Rico as well.
I went to Puerto Rico.
I went to Bad Bunny.
You went to Bad Bunny.
I went to Bad Bunny.
You were in Bad Bunny's casita.
I was.
At the concert.
I did not expect that.
How did you?
That sounds like a bachelor party.
It felt like a bachelor party.
I think that's the closest I've come to a bachelor party.
How did that happen?
Well, I didn't realize how they set up the stages.
Yeah.
You know, we got the main stage and then you got the casita.
I thought I was just going to be in the seats with the Ramones.
Oh, you were invited as just like come to the show.
Yeah, he was just like you got to come to the show.
And then next thing I know we're in this.
And it was really cool how they set it up.
Yeah, it's like a house party.
It's his house in the center of the stadium.
But then at one point he's on the stage.
And I realized now I'm on the stage.
And as a shy person, I didn't want to take attention away.
I didn't want to be like trying to have attention on me.
But at the same time, I've got the image of Ben Affleck at the Grammys not enjoying himself.
And I'm also like I don't want to not enjoy myself.
You kind of were like...
Yeah, it's like a combination of like I should run away right now.
And the music is so good.
Darren looks like he was having a really good time.
Darren had a blast.
He was like, he was shaking it.
I fell in love with Puerto Rican culture, man.
Dude, I could see myself just getting a place there and never leaving.
Little Beach House?
Little Beach House.
I could see you on the beach.
Yeah, the dancing.
The people are so sexy.
I mean, it's just amazing.
And you got that funky ass white boy energy.
Exactly.
I got funky ass white boy energy.
That's what they say about me.
Are you familiar with funky ass white boy energy?
No, tell me about that.
You kind of just got a little bit of rizz.
You got a little swag.
Okay, okay.
But not in the traditional movie star sense.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm not a movie star.
It's really an unattainable...
No, you are a movie star.
But it's like this unattainable kind of like the guys from the...
Have it.
Wait, what's that?
The tennis movie.
Oh, Challengers.
Challengers.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Those guys have it.
Yeah, you got some wrist action.
You know they're *******...
Look at that.
Is that good?
Do you play some tennis?
No.
Is this good?
I can see the ball spinning off that wrist.
That is something.
I don't play anything.
Man, I could watch you do that all day.
Well, you're easily entertained.
I'm like a two-year-old.
You're like a cat.
Yeah, I'm like a cat.
Yeah, wait till you see me with the lasers.
Darren and I, the night before Benito's show,
we went to this little part of town where there were no tourists whatsoever.
And it was this little street alleyway where it was only locals dancing salsa.
I know where it is.
You know where it is?
Yeah, I went there, too.
Did you go there?
La Perla.
Oh, well, I went to La Perla, as well.
Oh, this is a different one.
This is a different one.
We went salsa...
I salsa danced in the rain, and it was amazing.
Let's get up and sit on this bench.
All right.
You salsa danced in the rain?
Yeah, man.
At first, I was hesitant.
To dance.
Because everybody was so good.
Yeah.
But somebody asked me to dance, and I went out there,
and I salsa danced in the rain, and it was amazing.
You know who wouldn't do that?
Someone who wasn't a funky-ass white boy.
Exactly.
That's what I'm saying.
That's exactly the funky-ass white boy energy I'm talking about.
It's when you are approached to do some salsa, and you go,
I got that in me.
I got that dog in me.
Exactly.
I got that dog in me.
Do you have that dog in you?
I got that dog in me.
You're such a sensitive guy, though.
I'm sensitive.
You are sensitive.
Yeah.
Do people say that you might be the last movie star?
I don't know.
You're like a movie star guy.
Yeah.
Like the old guys from the past.
But there's so many people out there that are doing amazing work right now.
I just feel grateful that I'm able to work with the people that I'm getting to work with.
I've gotten to work with so many of my heroes.
And then are you and I going to do a movie together?
We can do something.
A movie?
You can take this under the sun.
Man, you play Eric in the studio right now.
Start reading the lines, baby.
Come on.
Let's improvise a scene.
Here we go.
All right.
Oh, God.
It's ******* hot, dude.
It's so hot, right?
When's Tony coming?
Tony got stuck.
He was at the bodega getting some chips a little bit ago.
I don't know what happened.
Every time he goes to get chips at the bodega, it takes him forever to get here, doesn't it?
What do you think he's actually doing?
I think he's not ******* coming back.
Why did you let him go?
Well, because.
Because what?
Because.
You know what he's actually doing?
I mean, you know.
I don't have to tell you.
I know you know.
I know I know.
You know, you know.
I like you.
Did Tony give you that?
What does that say?
Sub?
My mom gave me that.
Your mom gave you that?
Yeah, our mom.
Our mom.
Wow.
That's ******* good.
You know what?
I was always so nervous by improv class.
Really?
Yeah.
Were you?
No.
You don't seem like you were nervous.
I don't get scared.
I mean, I get scared of some stuff.
You don't get scared of it.
I don't.
I know you don't believe me.
No, I love it.
I love it.
But I really don't.
I'm trying to learn it.
All right, I'm going to ask you a couple more takes.
So this is takes on takes.
So I need your take on other people's takes.
Okay.
Fun socks aren't fun anymore.
100% agree.
I'm with you on that.
You agree with that?
Yeah.
They stopped being fun after...
I feel like they used to be fun and now they're just...
They're not special anymore.
Well, the not fun guys bought the fun socks to be fun.
That's exactly what happens.
Exactly.
And then now they're just socks.
Yeah.
Also, there's quality ----.
Yeah.
------- ----.
So you just got regular socks on?
Yeah, I wear white socks.
Are you a white socks guy?
I wear white socks.
Yeah.
I'm usually a white socks guy.
You got wiener dogs on yours.
Oh, yeah.
The not fun socks aren't cool.
They're so boring.
All right.
We're drinking too much water.
We're drinking too...
100% disagree.
We're not drinking enough water.
Well, no.
That's what they want you to think.
Who's they?
The water.
Big water.
Is there a big water?
Of course.
I guess so.
Have you ever been into a store?
Like, yeah.
There's a lot of water.
That's my point.
Why is the water at the store?
Yeah, it should be free.
It is free.
It's literally in the sink.
It is in the sink.
You can get it at any time.
And New York apparently has very clean drinking water.
New York tap is the best.
It's the best stuff.
Now, I do think I feel better when I drink water.
Don't you?
Yeah, but how much is too much?
And your skin is more hydrated.
This guy said...
And your mouth feels great.
This guy said we tell people to drink responsibly.
Uh-huh.
You should tell them to drink water responsibly.
Yeah.
We tell people to drink water responsibly.
Well, yeah, drink responsibly.
Eat responsibly.
And then water too.
And the water too.
That's a great take.
Okay.
All right, one more.
Oh, this one's interesting.
We gotta stop...
You can just scroll through your own Instagram.
I'm scrolling through my own Instagram.
Okay.
We gotta stop using the word uncircumcised and call them natty dicks instead, like natural dicks.
Natty dicks.
Natty dicks is great.
Is it?
I never thought about that before.
So, yeah, rather than uncircumcised, like that's a natty dick.
Yeah.
That funky-ass white boy has a natty dick.
That's exactly right.
Yeah, yeah.
100% over here.
There we go.
100%.
All right, funky-ass white boy.
There you go.
Thank you so much.
Love you.
Appreciate it.
I can't wait for our badge department.
I can't wait either.
Let's go right now.
Let's go.
We can do it in Brooklyn.
Oh, we're in Brooklyn?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Maybe we'll go in Manhattan.
I'm down for that.
