Tom here with the AfterTom YouTube channel
And for the next two days
We're going to be hiking, fishing, camping, exploring the wilderness of Alaska
And eating amazing food
Come along for the ride
Why don't you start with this up in the garage
OK, so what do we need
Fishing gear
The back here
This is my reel right here
I bought a lot of bait
Holy mackerel
Oh, those are perfect
And it has all my flies in it
All right, your pliers
Oh, here you go
Tense
Oh, this is lighter than a football
Here are the mats
Oh, there it is
The little hole right there
Squeeze that down
Just let that sit and dry for a little bit
Yeah, I like the comfort
It's better on my back
And this one
So these are butane stoves
Or isobutane
They're super light, but they don't work well in the cold
Luckily, it's the summertime
So that's probably all we need right there
We won't go through half of that
Do you know how light that is
Oh, jeez, yeah, that's way close
Flint's better
It's supposed to get down to 37 degrees
It's going to get kind of nasty
Let's pull it out and see what we got
So these are both pretty similar bags
But this one's got a little bit of a shell
Mosquito repellent, sunscreen, toothpaste, toothbrush
First aid kit, toilet paper
Very important, and some body warmers
In case we get cold
All right, should we see if our patch worked
Yep
Let's see if it holds
A bottle of lava wouldn't be terrible
When you're moving, you're hot
But once we get to our spot and make camp
We're going to get cold
So just sitting in the tent
It's working
Let's go
No, there you go
Now it'll fall down
My pillow is still not holding
Put a little bit of water in it and it'll hold
Yeah, see how easy that is
See that, that's a big hole
Let's go
Once it dries, we can patch it again
You don't like dates that much, do you
No, I do not
You like figs
I love figs
Dead bugs inside these ones
Oh, yeah, I like this stuff
How about this, do you like the liquor
Yes, yes, yes, yes, liquor
Not liquor, um
Liquorice
Yeah, you did it
Do you like chocolate-covered almonds
I do
So packing up
Packing up, packing in
Let me begin
Is that the second patch
Yep
15 batteries, 16 batteries, that's it
You might want to bring an extra memory card
The way you want to pack it
Heavy stuff wants to be against your back
And down low
And then, of course, if there's anything
You're going to need to access
While we're hiking
We want that near the top
Or in an outside pouch
Oh, that's pretty
Yeah, it's not horrible
Well, we're basically all packed up
So I'm going to put the camera down
I'll see you the day of the hike
OK, guys, it's hiking day
So it looks like it's going to be
A windy, cold day, buddy
Let's do it
It's going to make fishing rough
All right
Yeah, sure, I can put that in
Hey, shut that
It's probably because of the bear in the moose
Do you know how to use this
Pull that out
Spray
See that bush right there
It's about as far as it'll go
And with this wind
It'll go even less far
You can see there's a lot of snow
Still up on the mountaintop
I'm a little worried
That we're going to get to our spot
Which is going to be covered in snow still
First comes the worst, we go somewhere else
Yep
Do you want me to show you
Some of the plants
Yeah
Do you know what this is
A spruce
This is alder
Alder
See how the leaves are bumpy
And it doesn't get very tall
It only usually gets slightly over your head
Is it the same as elderflower
No, it's not elder
It's alder
Alder
It's a good question, though
Is this how
Oh, is that cow's parsnip
Cow's parsnip
But yeah, you got it
You know, like as your ashtray
Yeah, if you get the sap on you
And you get exposed to sun
It'll, like, give you a blistering sunburn
But I don't think everybody gets that
I think it's just certain people's sensitive skin
Yeah
You know what this is
What
This is willow
Oh, that's willow
Yeah, and you see how it's all clipped
Looks like someone's come and cut it
That's the moose
The moose eat the willows
And they eat the tips
Check this out
Okay
See how there's this kind of green inner bark
Suck on that green inner bark
Tell me what it tastes like
Have you ever bit into an aspirin pill
Oh
The same ingredient as an aspirin
A little bit of a painkiller
It'll get rid of a headache or something
It's bitter nasty though, isn't it
It tastes like depression
But that's why you never see a moose with a headache
See those tall trees right there
Yeah
You know what kind of tree those are
What
They're cottonwoods
Those trees only live around water
And in clean gravelly soil
So if you ever look into a valley
And you see cottonwood trees
You know it's probably near a stream or a creek
Hey, and if you look ahead
There's a little stream crossing the trail
Hey dad, what are those flowers right there
Those are bluebells
So you forage these to get girls
Mom loves these
See what you can do
If you want to be really super rugged
Put it behind your ear
Then you can be a pretty camper
Oh wow
So this plant right here is mountain ash or roan
And you can see the berries
These become a big cluster of red berries
This is a weird one
Some people say
The seeds in the berries are toxic
But I know other people make jam out of them
They're not particularly desirable berries
And you'll see a lot of it growing around town
Oh this right here Tom
This is lupine, arctic lupine
It's a poisonous plant
And in the fall it gets a purple flower
It's really pretty
When you go picking berries and stuff
Sometimes if you're not careful
You'll accidentally scoop up a little bit of lupine with it
I don't think it'll kill you
I think it'll just make you poop a bunch
Or give you an upset stomach
Very few plants will straight up kill you dad
Unless you're eating a bunch of them
You want me to get your licorice
Are you getting sweaty at all
I'm doing fine
I forgot we gotta turn on our inreaches
You hear that little weep
There you go
The little turtle noise tells you it's sent
So we got these little Garmin inreaches
And they're to help communicate with my mom at home
They can be used all around the world
No matter where you are
Regardless if you have cell service or not
We're just letting mom know that we're still alive
And not mauled to death
Dad you're looking pretty
I feel pretty
Oh so pretty
You know what this is right
No what is it
Fireweed
When it's little
You can eat it
Just like that
That's right
It's a little bitter
Feel like a cow
Yep you can smash up the leaves and dry them
And make a tea out of them
And the flowers you can make a syrup
I've had fireweed ice cream and it tastes good
Uh oh
You can see all the shoots coming up through the snow
That's not that cool
Just little babies
The further back in this valley we go
The more snow we're gonna see
The growing season is so short
How snowy
Also I'm getting a little hot so
What are these trees with like the little fuzz balls on it
Those are willows
I know they call those pussy willows
One of the first signs of spring is the willows get their pussy willows
Isn't it so soft
Oh yeah it is it's like a little rabbit foot
Oh this is a little frustrating
We just talked to some people walking by
Where the lake we're going to is completely iced over
I don't think we're going to be able to camp
Well we will it's just no fishing and plenty of cold
Would you like to go do another hike where we can go do some fishing
Yeah and camping
Warmly warmly
I got some ideas
Are you ready to just kind of wing it with me
Yep
All right let's go do it
We better let mom know
We'll let mom know
Ninja skin
Yeah we're almost to the car again
It's a lot faster downhill than uphill
Hey we made it back alive
Let's do it
All right so we're here at chair 5 at Girdwood, Alaska
And we're going to grab some lunch here
Yeah that'll work
I can help you if you need
Hey you got a bunch of calories
Oh that was delicious
Hey the rain stopped
Yay
Fishing rock
Dad what you got there
Firewood spear
Look at this Tommy
Yeah
This is one of mommy's favorite flowers
It's a columbine
I carved her one of jade ones
A jade one
Yeah isn't this pretty
Temperate rainforest I believe
Yeah temperate rainforest
You can see these huckleberry bushes look how big they are
Oh are those blueberries
Yeah technically they're huckleberries
But here in Alaska we call them blueberries
Wait why is it technically a huckleberry
Because that's what it is
But in Alaska everyone calls them blueberries
Or they'll call them high bush blueberries
Because they're so blue and look like blueberries
They look just like a freaking blueberry
Yeah
You know what kind of plant that is
Oh watermelon berry bush
That's a watermelon berry bush that's right
They taste pretty good
They do
And this you know what this is Tom right
Oh devil's club I hate those
Devil's club
You can see the thorns
Especially on the stalks
See that Tom
Yeah
This is part of the historic Iditarod trail
This is where the original Iditarod
Yeah it went from sewer to gnome
Can you imagine being on a dog sled
Tearing through these woods
Evil person get back here
I like this trail
Have you ever been on this trail before
Never
Hey dad
Yeah
See this weed right here
Yeah
I call this Lego weed
Because we like to fiddle with it
And you can just take it apart like that
And then just put it back in like that
Like Legos
That is really cool
I know and then see I got the stem where I broke it off
I like the mini anyway
You know what these are
What
They are fiddle head ferns
Oh yeah
Can you eat these
Yeah you can eat these
Take the little bit off the edge
Ow
I hate you
Devil's club is pokey
Devil's club added to the enemy list
Hey dad what do you see
Yeah
See that it's a moose print
See it there's its toe
Oh that's big
That's a big moose yeah
Walking along the trail
Yeah
Take the other one
What is that
You know what that is
That's bear poop
Yeah
That's bear poop
That is bear poop
That's true
See there's a little fishing spot
Yeah
You know what Tom
This is kind of flat down here
There's plenty of room for a tent right there
Nice and sheltered
Yeah
So let's camp right here
Alright
Your call bud
Might be a little hesitant
To build a fire under this tree
But I don't really need a fire
In this weather
Alright
Maybe we can do this
There's one more
Yeah we can make it work
Oh yeah well
This can't look small for sure
Dad I've been fishing for a little bit
And I've only had one follow it
So I think it's time
That I need to switch lures
Alright I'll switch you up
I'm gonna give you a fly
Okay
I got it on camera
At least I got one foot dry
So if you look right here
These are spruce tips
In the springtime
The spruce trees will
Grow little buds
You pluck them off
Just pluck them off
And you can eat them
They're edible
I like them
And they make a killer soda
It's currently 7.30pm
And we're going to go
Bust out and cook dinner
Right here
You gotta be a little careful
Go fill up
Fill this up with the lake water
You're going to boil this right
Yeah
There we go
Yeah I understand
What are you doing with the bag
This bag
Yeah
So that's a bag of frozen spaghetti sauce
Putting it in there
And warming it up
We'd make spaghetti
And we've got some garlic bread
Have a hot chocolate
Is that good enough for you
We can call that good
Yeah that is good
Some warm garlic bread
Yeah that looks like a delicious meal
There's a bug on the bottom of the camera
Let me see your plate
I'll wash your dishes
Here's Tommy
Ready for a little bit
Of a scary movie Tom
I'm ready for it
I like horror movies
Oh that was a scary movie
But it had a good ending
So I won't have nightmares for 4 weeks
It's late though
Let's go to bed
We need to get you to bed
Well anyway
I'm going to go put the camera up
I'll see you guys in the morning
Good morning
Tommy's still asleep
Look what I just found
That's a white moose hair right there
Vacuum sealed a thing of bread pudding
Boiling in his bag for a nice long time
Wake it up Tom
Good morning
Yeah you rolled right down next to me
I woke up smashed between this stick and my son
Yeah I didn't pick the most level spot
Well listen Tom
If we get up and get to it
There's another lake we can hike to
Which we might have a better chance
Of catching some fish
That sounds fun
But Tommy emerges from his burrow
After a long hibernation
You have the gas of an older man my son
Get out of here
Here Tom
Thank you my good sir
I'll tell you this is a lot nicer
Than up in the mountains
Looking pretty good
Four eggs in there
Breakfast sausage in a can
And then what we're going to do
Is just going to put it in here
We're going to boil that
All right bread pudding
Here you go
You like that
Kind of like French toast in a bag huh
You want breakfast sandwiches
There you go bud
Pack it in that if you want
When you steam the eggs
It makes them real fluffy doesn't it
Yeah I know
And honestly
We threw some of the leftover sausage
In the lake
And the grayling are coming up
And eating it
The grayling right there
Got to go really quiet
Oh dude
He just totally hit it
Oh he took it he took it
Got you
I can't believe that worked
He's so
No no not today
I want to get a photo with him
Yeah yeah yeah
Hold him up
We don't want him to get hurt
They're pretty fragile
Oh he's gone
Oh
Well that was an arctic grayling
I want to show you
How beautiful they are
But
Yeah sorry
He kind of got away
Hey high five man
Not skunked
All right
That would be awesome sir
Look at that feather
Yeah what is that
That is the tail feather
Of a spruce grouse
There's another one right there
See
Maybe someone shot one
What is that
You know what this is
No
It's an outhouse without the house
Just do your business
Nice little hole down there
And
Don't need the house part
Because there ain't nobody to see you poop
Except for the bears
Imagine getting mauled by a bear on the toilet
Here's how deep it gets
This seems a little bit more doable
Here let's walk around some more
We haven't seen any fish
Plus I lost my lure to snack
So I think we're gonna pack it up
We made it to the car
That's where we should be fishing
I think that's it
Do you like the burger
It's hard to be a girl
Oh that was delicious
This video
It's been a fun time hasn't it
It feels nice to be home
