Telling visual stories of ancient Chinese culture through fashion and pop culture.
Hanfu is a cultural substitute.
It represents thousands of years of history and culture,
as well as cultural integration.
I want to use my culture and the beautiful photos I take
to let people know that, apart from being beautiful,
it can also have a deeper meaning.
My name is Gong Panpan.
I'm 33 years old.
I'm a traditional culture communicator.
Since I was little, I've watched a lot of traditional dramas.
I was born and raised in China.
When I was 7, I came to Singapore with my family.
Since then, I haven't had much contact with Chinese culture.
One day, when I was about to get married,
I decided to take a series of photos with my husband
about traditional culture.
For me, it's a form of identity recognition.
When I heard that Hanfu was a Chinese traditional costume,
I didn't expect it to exist.
I didn't know what Hanfu was,
what its definition was,
what kind of clothing it was,
and what dynasty it started from.
I was curious.
So I started to learn about Hanfu.
I learned about clothing, jewelry,
and the history of China.
For me, this is a very important part.
I've never been interested in history since I was little.
I think it's all about war.
When I started to learn about Hanfu,
I realized that it was very meaningful to me.
I made a series of photos
with four beautiful women
and a series of photos of four princesses from Disney.
Zhao Jun, Guifei, Xi Shi, and Diao Chan.
I compared them to the Beauty and the Beast,
Cinderella, Snow White, and Belle.
Many things in culture are the same.
I want to introduce traditional things
that people can accept,
get to know, and are familiar with.
So that people don't think it's too far away.
I think the most difficult series
is the Beauty and the Beast series that I recently made.
I want to introduce to people
some traditional Chinese mythological characters.
The most difficult part is that
the Beauty and the Beast is a cosplay.
So their hair is not black.
No matter what the characters are,
they all have black hair.
It's a bit difficult to combine the two.
I know I'll be criticized for making this series.
But I still think that
trying to combine them
is a very meaningful thing for me.
To this day,
the thing that makes me the happiest
is that many people come to me
and say, especially Chinese people,
thank you for letting me get to know my culture.
For me, this is a very
fulfilling thing.
