Chief Conductor Mark Wigglesworth leads the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in a marvellous performance of Schubert's Eighth Symphony. Schubert’s gift for melody is abundantly evident in his ‘Unfinished’ Symphony. The variety and immediacy of the themes suffusing its two movements are breathtaking; it is powerful, satisfying music. No one really knows why he never completed it – perhaps it was left unfinished because it could not, need not be finished.
After the interval, the BSO's 2025/26 Artist-in-Residence, superstar baritone Roderick Williams, and Soprano Claudia Boyle join Mark to perform Alexander Zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony. The symphony, which paints poems by Bengali writer Rabindranath Tagore with sound, owes a clear debt to his contemporary Mahler and his Das Lied von der Erde. Its two soloists, baritone and soprano, alternate with one another over the course of the seven movements in an emotional dance to explore longing and desire.
