all about inclusivity and fun this
evening at an event held at AIC, proving
basketball is a sport accessible for
everyone. 22 News reporter Kaylee Thomas
was at the event and joins us live with
how a program is making a difference for
those living with disabilities.
>> Sierra AIC's basketball court was alive
with excitement, teamwork, and some
serious hoop shooting. All thanks to a
partnership creating opportunities for
everyone to play the sport.
The Center for Human Development's
all-in barrier free recreation program
offered a chance for those of all
abilities to learn fundamental
basketball skills all alongside AIC
athletes. Small groups came together,
did some shooting, did some dribbling,
did some some pass work. The event saw
huge success in October, and on
Wednesday, it was brought back for a
second time.
>> We've had a great turnout so far. Um
we've had both wheelchair users and
stand up players um all different types
of ability levels uh doing this program
and it's really great to see.
>> The goal was simple to create an
inclusive environment where everyone
could experience the joy of basketball
no matter who they are.
>> Everybody needs to see that they have a
spot and they have a seat at the table
and they're able to um be here and show
their skills and really have that
platform where they can they can show us
their talent. highlevel athletes
provided coaching, encouragement, and
mutual support.
>> It's a way for people to look up to
somebody that's achieving something
that's really spectacular. Uh but also
for our students to recognize and
realize that they are role models in
more ways than they can imagine.
>> Organizers aim to have more of these
clinics in the future, continuing to
fulfill their promise of accessibility
and inclusion one slam dunk at a time.
CHD's next big event will be adaptive
rock climbing on December 1st. It will
be taking place at the Central Rock Gym
in Hadley. working for you. Key Thomas,
