Enrichment for captive cheetahs is a bit different than for other captive wild African cats. Cheetahs don't necessarily enjoy the stationary toys and won't play with them. But you give a box, watermelon or hay stuffed skin to a leopard, tiger or lion, they will play with it (for awhile); especially they are scented. But cheetahs are designed to run and the best enrichment for them are games that encouraging them to run... like the zip lines that give them exercise or a friendly game of soccer with a volunteer... me.
I take on Juno, Neo, and hunter in a game of soccer 1on3. Not really fair but I couldn't keep the ball in possession more than a few seconds anyway. Eden and Kenji show up later in the video and show their skills.
Thanks for watching!
Oh, I actually picked it up. Incredible.
Keeping Jaws.
All right, it's time to play cheetah soccer. That's what I call it. It's me against three teenage cheetahs.
We'll see who wins.
There you go. Okay, not an official, official soccer ball, but it's not cheetah proof either. You can tell.
But it's all I got.
This will be unlike any soccer game you've ever witnessed.
Because the rules are made up as we go.
By the cheetahs.
It was three against one, but I've played this game before.
A trained amateur against natural-born wild talent.
Starring Neo, the ornery but affectionate one.
Here, let me throw it for you. Let me throw it for you.
And Juno, the very soft, shy, and possessive one.
Very...
Breathing.
And the majestic Hunter.
Who, if you disrespect her, you get one of these.
Or this.
When you do respect her, you get this.
The game was afoot, or should I say, a paw.
It was time to toss the ball into play.
I wasn't sure what to expect, except the unexpected.
Juno kicked the ball to me, and then we were ready.
But I could already see some problems brewing.
This game was gonna need a referee.
This isn't any kind of soccer game you're used to. These are cheetah rules.
So, basically, anything goes.
Rules didn't seem to matter.
The game was played even out of bounds.
They did obey one rule using their heads.
Well, at least their mouth.
As you can imagine, there were a lot of fouls.
That's way illegal. You can't be doing that with that ball. Soccer ball.
Y'all fouled out like the first minute.
I mean, it's no wonder it's a soccer ball. I don't know what it is.
What would you call that?
Y'all gonna get hurt. Y'all gonna get hurt.
It was time to toss the ball back into play.
But these are cheetah rules, so you just toss it to yourself.
The biggest problem was, every cheetah wanted to play goalie.
Goalie and forward.
Oh, you can't carry the ball like that.
You use your head, not your mouth.
I never knew a soccer game, how to play a soccer rule, how to use your mouth.
With everyone wanting to be a goalie, I had to change the rules.
That's definitely a foul.
That's three fouls. Y'all are out. Three fouls and out.
It was time to play two-ball cheetah soccer.
Juno made one nice pass to Hunter, but she didn't follow through.
I didn't get much play time.
They took the ball away from me at will.
Even though every cheetah player was a goalie, they did make some pretty good saves.
And there were spoilers of the game, like Eden, who also wanted to be goalie.
And a forward.
The biggest spoiler of the game was Kenji, who preferred rugby.
It's time to tee off.
The worst foul was when one of the fans ran on the field and interrupted the play.
Kenji is a huge fan of the all-female cheetah soccer team.
He gets cursed at, but that doesn't stop him.
This is going to end up a red flag.
That ended up an injury timeout, but he was okay. Just a claw in the forehead.
Remember what I said about respect?
Kenji yawns it off.
The game abruptly ended after Eden took out her frustrations on the ball.
And popped it.
That's cheetah strength, man. Cheetah bite strength.
The game ended in a scoreless victory.
It was a great game, despite everyone getting a red card and ending up in the penalty box.
Enriching the lives of wild captive animals is a challenge.
Captive cheetahs can become bored, lonely, and stressed if left alone.
Enriching a captive cheetah's life is different from most predators.
That's because their primary focus in life is to run.
That's why they enjoy games where it's required to run.
Most cheetahs don't play with stationary toys. They want ones that move.
After a hard day's play, it was time for a cat nap for all of us.
These cheetahs truly enjoy the interaction and enrichment they receive from their human caretakers.
And it's a privilege for me to give it to them.
