And I'm gonna try to turn just a little bit more
with this one and get the whip and the turn.
And that one is just ripped.
Ridiculous power at any age isn't real.
I'm not here to tell you that if you're 75,
you're gonna carry it 320.
You might, but you'd be an extreme outlier, right?
But the vast majority of players are leaving 20, 30
plus yards on the table just because of their sequencing.
That last lesson that I shot was you've got to whip it
to rip it.
And there's one critical piece that I want to add here
today and I can't wait to share it with you.
I've been working really hard on hitting driver longer.
I got some young guys that I got to try to keep up
with around here.
You might be in that same situation.
So let's get to it here.
And I've got a hit on these cheat moves real quickly here.
I talk about this in so many of my videos.
So you've probably seen me talk about this before,
but I feel like I should touch on it in every video,
but I'm gonna try to fly through this really quickly
and just talk about these three little cheat move.
Cheat move number one is just to have that strong grip
where closed face grip, it should be called, right?
This is where we just take this lead hand.
We move it over for a right-handed player to the right
on the grip of the club.
There's a lot of distinct angle between the back
of that lead hand and the back of that lead forearm.
When you move your hand over this way,
it makes the club face want to go that way, right?
It makes it want to square up the toe of the club,
whip past the heel of the club.
Huge source of effortless power.
That's what we talked about in that last lesson.
You've got to whip it to rip it, right?
So that is what we're gonna be talking about here today.
Cheat move number two is just to drop this back foot
back a little bit,
because almost everybody's struggling
with that over the top downswing.
Swinging outside over the top leads
to that chicken wing here, right?
We want the exact opposite.
We want to be swinging from the inside on the downswing,
but when you swing from the inside on the downswing,
what we're trying to get is draw spin on the ball
that makes the ball go longer.
That means that path coming from the inside
and that face being square to the target,
not square to the path.
So that's cheat number two.
It's just to drop this back foot back,
helps you get those hands a little bit deeper behind you.
That helps you swing that path more
from the inside on the downswing.
The third little cheat here is just this little hip bump.
Okay, after we've taken that setup
with that closed face grip
and we dropped this back foot back,
now we just want to make a little hip bump here
towards the target.
Set your spine angle away from the target.
That helps you swing up at it, okay?
So those are those first three little cheat moves
that I want to touch on real quickly here,
and I will link to a video in the description below
that describes all of that in a lot more detail
if you want to go check that out.
Now this whip, this whip is so important.
It is such a huge source of effortless power,
and here's why.
The whip is when the toe of the club
whips past the heel of the club, right?
But what happens is the toe of the club,
or the club head, I should say,
also whips past the hands,
and it puts this club up into this position right here.
And I tell you, I see so many players,
it's just that over-the-top swing.
Then what ends up happening is
you've got to hold that face open
because your path's going over the top left
for a right-handed player.
So if you released it, you'd pull it.
So you've got to end up holding that face open,
and it turns into this chicken wing move, right?
And it's an ugly move, right?
The chicken wing is not pretty right here, right?
But it's not just that it's ugly,
it's also that it kills all of your speed, okay?
So because at the same point in the swing,
if you're here and you're in this chicken wing position,
if I just go to that whip position with this elbow
instead of up, elbow down,
there's my whip position, right?
So look at what happens.
Look how much further the club has traveled
at that same exact, this is the same frame.
If we were looking at your swing in slow motion,
you'd be right here.
And if we look at that same frame,
you'd be right here if you just change this elbow position
from here, the chicken wing,
to elbow down, the whip move right here.
Same frame, club here, same frame, club here.
So it's obviously traveling faster, right?
And the thing is, you're not swinging any harder.
All you're doing is changing the sequence.
You're just going,
instead of the sequence being over the top here,
you're just swinging from the inside
and then boom, here, right?
So club there instead of club there
at the exact same point in the swing.
That's why this is so critical for effortless power.
But one thing that I was,
and I was out working on the range on this yesterday.
And so, and I want to really clarify this
because I think so many players,
when they start to try to get that whip,
it's going to turn into more of this.
So when you think whip,
I think a lot of players think flip,
and then it turns into this move right here
where the club face stays open and you're whipping it,
but you're not letting the toe of the club
pass the heel of the club like this, right?
That's a totally different move right here.
So if you whip it like this,
that face is still going to be open.
You're going to hit that weak slice
and you're really not,
all you're going to increase your backspin,
not decrease your backspin like we want, right?
So if you're here, you're still kind of whipping the club,
but you're not whipping it with the toe
whipping past the heel of the club, right?
So think of this almost,
and I think there's a great way to explain this
that I saw somebody else in a YouTube video.
I want to share it with you here.
All right, so I wish I could give credit
to whoever I saw teaching this,
but I don't remember his name
and I hadn't seen it like this before.
I thought it was such a great way to explain this,
but so often I think so many players,
the body gets too fast, the club lags behind open,
stays way back here behind where we want it whipping past
like we just talked about, right?
And this alignment stick like this
is just a great way to kind of feel
a huge exaggeration of this.
And so often I talk about the role of exaggeration
and making a swing change.
You've really got to exaggerate the heck out
of what you're trying to do in your rehearsals
so that when you actually go to hit a ball,
you're never going to do it as much as you do
in your rehearsal swing.
So, so often we're practicing these extreme exaggerations
and this is one of them.
So what he was talking about in teaching here
was just putting your hands
right by this alignment stick here
and then coming in and trying to feel
kind of the whip this way,
where the hands kind of stay behind the alignment stick,
but the toe of the club really whips
past the heel of the club, right?
And you can see when I'm doing that,
the toe is going this way, right?
It's not this, where the toe is staying,
the club face is staying open and the toe staying open,
it's this, where that toe is,
it's almost a face down kind of position.
And this is just a great way to feel that.
It's like a tether ball, right?
If you had a tether ball on a pole
and you're trying to push that thing
and you're trying to whip it around, right?
It's not whipping like this, it's whipping around.
And that's a good kind of mental image
for how to really feel that whip of the toe of the club
past the heel of the club.
All right, let's talk about how to feel this action
and then we'll start hitting a few here.
But this feeling here is just to get this club
back in just this trail hand
and just feel that club coming from the inside
and whipping and feel that toe of the club.
You wanna feel that toe of the club whip around you here.
Okay, feel that club whip around
and you can exaggerate it a little bit
and really just feel that move right here.
You can almost put your arm,
like we did with the alignment stick,
you could put this arm right here
to kind of stop your trail arm
and make that move right there, right?
It's just whipping that toe of the club.
That's a pretty big exaggerated feeling of it,
but that's the feeling that we want.
Slower here, right?
It's just boom, like this.
And it's gonna feel almost like that club
is in that face down kind of position.
And again, you're not gonna exaggerate it like that
when you go to hit one.
The exaggeration is for the rehearsals
because when you hit one,
those old habits are gonna come back out
and you're gonna be somewhere between
what you used to do and this extreme exaggeration
of what you're now trying to do here.
So now put both hands on it
and just feel that almost a huge exaggeration.
Picture that alignment stick right there
that's gonna stop your hands
so that that toe of the club
can really just whip past the heel of the club here, okay?
So that's the feeling that we want right there.
Now we'll go through a few here.
Light's about to hit me.
Hopefully we can keep going here,
but let's hit a few with those thoughts and feelings.
All right, the light's hitting here,
but sometimes I get lens flare
when that light hits from the side.
So hopefully we don't get any of that
and you can kind of see this here.
But so we are feet together, aim the face.
Then it's that good closed face grip.
Front foot goes just smaller step,
little bit bigger step and back,
back a little bit here with that trail foot.
Hip bump, right?
Now we're ready just to whip that toe of the club
past the heel of the club
and really just focus more on that whip
rather than the body motion.
You'll probably naturally turn a little bit
when you do this.
And then just start with some real smaller swings here,
right?
Feet together in the face, good closed face grip,
smaller step, little bit bigger step, hip bump.
And now really just trying to feel that toe of the club
just whip past the heel of the club.
And there's a nice little draw
up that right side right there.
So that's the thought, that's the feeling.
And it just feels like very whippy
and try to exaggerate it a little bit.
And always, always, always rehearse in between swings
that you're making, right?
So just stop here and just feel.
Try to feel that this hand work over this hand
so that that toe releases around and down there, right?
Feet together in the face, closed face grip,
smaller step, little bit bigger step and back,
hip bump and really just trying to feel that thing whip.
And you'll get that, that's okay.
There's a little hot one there
that I whipped a little bit too much right there.
And you probably won't whip too much
when you first start really practicing this.
And I'll also say that when you're really focused
on a whip like that, that might happen.
But what's gonna make that start to happen less
is when you start to add the body rotation in,
when you actually go to hit shots
like you normally would, right?
So the faster the body goes,
the less that whip's gonna turn the club over.
So that's kind of a good exaggeration.
Let's see if we can get a little bit of body rotation
with this one here and get a little bit more
of a normal ball fight and get the benefits
of body rotation is power, whip is power.
You know, the best players are getting all
of those things happening together.
So feet together, aim the face, good.
Closed face grip, smaller step, little bit bigger step,
hip bump, whip, and I'm gonna try to turn
just a little bit more with this one
and get the whip and the turn.
And that one is just ripped.
That is a bullet that is running a mile
with a hot little draw right there.
I'll take that one on the golf course all day long.
That probably is gonna run out to 270, 280,
something like that, with a swing
that really just feels very efficient
and it doesn't feel like I'm swinging hard at all.
