How Solar Radiation Shaped Human Evolution and DNA. For tens of thousands of years, Neanderthals and Denisovans thrived across Europe, Asia, and Siberia, mastering the art of survival in some of the most unforgiving climates on Earth. They endured glacial cycles, hunted megafauna, and developed complex cultural behaviors, leaving behind tools and even evidence of symbolic thinking. Yet, despite their resilience, both species suddenly and mysteriously disappeared 40,000 years ago, leaving behind only traces of their genetic legacy in modern humans.

A recent study published in the journal ‘Reviews of Geophysics’ proposes an answer.
