Welcome to Extra Throttle House. I'm Thomas. And I'm James. And this is a JEG F-Type. F-Type what?
R. No. S. V. R. No. There was a time when you got an F-Type and it was an F-Type or F-Type S.
Yeah. An F-Type S with a V8. Yeah. Or an F-Type R. Yeah. This is the R75 P575.
Really? Oh yeah. The more numbers the better. The R75 is, so it is an R, that's that R,
and then the 75 is because it's the 75th anniversary of JEG, which means it has some
logos and black badges. Okay. And then the P575 is the engine thing, so it's 575 horsepower.
But that is the name of this. It's the R75 P575 convertible. Well, that's dumb. I know. I know.
Isn't this the last F-Type? It is the final F-Type. The final year. What a boring way to go out.
Well, it still has an R. At least it still has an F. It's still an R. Yeah. They've increased
and it's also an R that has the original SBR's power. The R used to only be 550.
And this is all-wheel drive. This is all-wheel drive. They've been all-wheel drive for a while.
I think only the first year R, I may be wrong, was 550 horsepower rear-wheel drive and then from
there. But it is, as we discovered and have continued to discover, a quite rear-drive
biased all-wheel drive. Oh, for sure it is. Yeah, yeah. And it's supercharged V8. Supercharged V8.
This is one of the few supercharged V8s left, period. Yeah. Right? Get this,
black wings and some of the other stuff, right? You're looking at basically, you know,
it's $130,000 in Canada. You're looking at an LC500 priced fast convertible. Absolutely
direct competitor of the LC500. Absolutely direct competitor. Also Carrera convertibles.
Can I just say that as far as convertible specs go, this is perfect. This is Portofino blue
with a white interior. Because you want white in a convertible to reflect the heat
and cooled seats. Right, because as we said in our Z4 video, the one thing you do when you make
a roadster is solve for swan pass. Yes, solve for swan pass. That is the equation. And they
have attempted to do that. White seats and the cooled seats is the only way to do this. Like,
they're actually, in the sun, not... Like, the difference between black seats and white seats
in a convertible is, it's like 200% better, basically. It's the last year of this,
which sounds sad and it is for sure sad because it's going to EV. Oh right, clamshell.
But it has been around for a long time. You're coming on to 10 years now. Yeah. That doesn't
look that good, the engine. No, it doesn't. Also mounted really high up. But you know what?
It's okay. Yeah, because I haven't got cool stuff. I haven't got like a dry sump or anything.
Whatever. It's great. I love it. I think it's a cool car. I always love the F-Type. I'm excited
to drive one again. Who says you're driving? Do we rock, paper, scissors? I think we rock,
paper, scissors. Come here. No, you come here. I was going to meet you in the middle.
Okay, so it's rock, paper, scissors, shoot.
You don't have to say shoot. You just do the shoot. One little complaint while we're standing
outside of it. The trunk's quite small. It is. You got out of the way. Yeah, okay. Rock,
paper, scissors, shoot. Rock, paper, scissors, shoot. Thomas drives. Last time you won that,
you had to drive the beast. Yeah, secret. I wanted to drive the beast. No, I didn't.
I'm never going to get the seatbelt out, apparently. Jag, Jag things. It's happening.
No, that's not going to work from there, is it? What are you going to be able to do from there
that I haven't done already? Good. Yeah, yeah. I should have tried that. Pull the seat up. Yeah.
All right, let's see. We might not be reviewing this car. Carsten, have you had a passenger in
this? The seatbelt's locked. Like, it literally won't. It was cool. Oh, it was. We're good. We're
entitled millennials. Okay, ready? We're going to start the car. Here we go.
That's my little... Sounds quite far away, though. It actually did sound pretty far away. It's like
someone started a Jag over there. Okay. All right. So, unbeknownst to you, viewers,
we have an Aston Martin on the same day as this. We'll release that video first. And not that
they are to be compared. It's quite interesting getting out of something that's hundreds of
thousand dollars more in the same concept and getting into this because everything feels
cheap in here. It isn't, though. It's not. Not for the money. The Jag is a discount Aston. It is
100%. But I have to recalibrate my brain to this price point because there's more cowl shake,
the materials feel cheaper. It doesn't feel as substantial. Yeah. Right? So, I don't know what
that's saying. That's saying that this is priced well or the Aston's priced well. Anyway, let's
review this. Let's put the exhaust on. Let's put the exhaust on because that's very important. Is
it on? It's on. Okay. And then we're going to dynamic mode as well. There we go. Why can't
the Aston sound loud? Why can't the Aston sound loud? That's so loud. It's so loud.
The slaps. That absolutely slaps. That slapped mid-gear. What is it doing? I don't know. It's
making tons of noises. So, here's something interesting is that, you know, compared to the
Aston, well, just because we just recently drove it, this is not a refined sound. No. It's angry,
it's brutish, it's loud. It also sounds a bit artificial. It's chaotic. Yeah. Yes. It is very
much a fart on the upshift. But it's fun. It is fun. If you've just come away from a dealership
trying a normal, you know, what's the price of this? Base Carrera convertible?
This is way more animated than a 911. Oh, so much more.
Not nearly as sharp though. No, it's not. But this splits the difference between sports car
and Grand Tourer. You know what I miss is the, we said this the last time we drove this, where's my
pops and bangs? On the downshifts. Go on, hit it. You should do it right now. I'm in the downshift.
Yeah, yeah. If you do the downshift though. If you feather the throttle. Yeah, I'm doing it.
Yeah. Yeah, nothing. They got removed a few years ago. It was obnoxious. It was obnoxious.
But that's why you get one of these, because you want to be a little obnoxious. So, I believe this
hasn't really changed since we drove it a couple of years ago. Apart from, I read that they've
upgraded this. What's that? They've upgraded like the rear suspension knuckle for this year,
for the R75s. Why? I don't know. Okay. That's what I read. That sounds like there was an issue
and something was wearing out. Yeah, I'm not sure that's something you'd feel two years later. But
no, look, the materials in here are nice for the price. They're fine. Yeah, for sure. If you
compare this to a Boxster GTS 4 liter, that's not that fancy inside until you add all the extended
leather packages and then you get really expensive. This is so much more of an interesting car than
a Porsche. Yes. It's not as good. It's not as good. It's not as good. Nothing's as good. But it's way
more exciting. Yeah, yeah. I mean, it's all the engine, really. Yeah, and you know what's
interesting is that it doesn't actually feel that quick. No? No. 570. Well, it's under 4,000 pounds.
I think it starts at like 3,900 and something pounds. It feels to me right now as quick as an
LC500. No, it's faster. Is it? Oh yeah, it's quicker for sure. It's supercharged V8.
It's got 100 horsepower more. Crap, that's loud. Yeah, it's really, it's really quite loud.
It's also absolutely beautiful. It's great looking. Beautiful. It really is. I still prefer
the original body style with the headlights on top to the headlights on the side. Well,
they thin them. They thin them. Are my cool seats on right now? Because they don't even need to be
if they aren't. Because how do you do that? Oh, no. You pull this. You push it in. No, no. This
is a great thing. I love this. Oh, that bit. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. This is what's been removed
from new Range Rover. Just the white leather is enough to keep you comfortable, right? It's
such a difference. But I can feel that ventilation a little bit. I can now, actually. Yeah, great.
Okay, so let's go. I want to just take it out of dynamic mode. Sorry, I don't know.
So, again, like just comparing it to the Aston, the ride is not sophisticated. No,
obviously not. And it's good, though. But even, like, let's go price match, you know, C8 Corvette
with the MagnaRide. It's better. Still, that's better than this as well. Yeah. This is its final
year. It gets that logo. That's amazing. Whoa. Yeah. Okay, so now that you brought the C8 up,
that's unfortunate because this is more money than just a, like a Stingray with a... No,
well-optioned Stingray is similar. They feel like direct competitors. They are,
except one's really, really pretty, and the other one now looks like a Corvette,
which when it came out was like, well, what's this new supercar? But now my brain is like,
oh, that's the Corvette. Oh, that's just the Corvette, though. So I think the F-Type will
stand the test of time better. In 10 years, the final edition F-Type will be more coveted than
one of the early years C8 Stingrays. Yeah, I would think so. I would think so. Yeah.
I've always liked the F-Type. I don't really care about any of its issues at this point because
it's 2024 and you can still, for the last year, you can still get a supercharged V8 convertible.
Honestly, what are the issues? What are they? The infotainment's still really laggy because it's
made by the company that's behind this car. That's the main issue, honestly. See, you have
no issues. The gauge cluster went digital, which was a big improvement. It dated the
early years. Although those early years now, and I want to look into this soon,
have become an absolute bargain. I think they have. Yeah, yeah. And if you've been watching
the main channel, we've done the $10,000 cars. We've done the $35,000 cars. I think F-Type Rs
now you can get high 40s, 50s. So if we do a $50,000 car comparison, I would like to include
that. Yeah, it fits right in there for sure. It's a lot of car for the money, for sure,
especially in the used market, right? But I think, again, you're asking the genuine issues, is that
it isn't that nice in here. It's just nice enough. The LC500 makes you go, wow. Right?
The materials, the styling. I agree. And listen, when this came out, it competed with the AMG GTS,
which we've recently tested. Yeah. And again, inside that was a spaceship. Yeah. This is quite
simple, especially if you go with color schemes like this. At least you've got the white here,
but sometimes when it's all black, it's quite a simple interior. But then,
again, on the used market, the fact that these are 50 grand, what does that get you in the Cayman
world? A 981 Cayman from 2014? I agree. Yeah, I agree. I agree. This is a great car. Screaming
V8. The ZF transmission is great. Yeah. The steering is perfect for a grand tourer. Oh,
it's totally fine. The turning is great. The front end is fantastic on this. It's fun to drive. It
doesn't feel very heavy. With the roof off, you get absolutely absurd noises. I just want to point
out, today I was at this roundabout going in a direction, and I just read an article on Throttle
Clubhouse about how Canadian drivers suck. Yes. I did. And today, and I wish I was making this up,
as I was pulling into this roundabout, someone stopped in the middle of the roundabout to let
me in. That was nice of them. I was like, what in the hell are you doing? Yeah, you've got to drive
predictably. That's what we've got to do. Jesus. God. So annoying. Anyway, I was feeling British
because we're in a British car, and I was thinking about driving in England, and they know how to do
roundabouts there. I think this is a fantastic car. Of course it is. I think if you're looking
for a fun, I've now made it sports car that's six figures. Yeah, this is just that perfect level,
isn't it? This to me feels like a younger car than an LC500. Yeah, because the LC500 is less
obnoxious. But I think this is prettier. It's more spry. It's not as designed. It's prettier
in its simplicity. The LC500 has a wicked cool design. Yeah, yeah. More of a statement, though.
Yeah. This really has a place. And considering how much it hasn't changed in a couple of years,
I reckon you could probably pick up an F-Type R that's not the R75 that has a digital gauge
cluster if you want it for, like, 70s, 80s. That's probably the move. And then that really appeals.
You know what F stands for? What's it stand for? This car.
