FlightAware showed that more than 2,000 flights were delayed or canceled on Friday morning. NTD discussed this with Armen Kurdian, a pilot and aviation expert. Kurdian is also a retired U.S. Navy Captain and a California Senate candidate. He said that when there are fewer air traffic controllers, the only way to maintain safety is to cancel flights. Controllers are calling in sick or taking other jobs due to not getting paid as a result of the government shutdown.
