Socializing a spicy kitten (Huey + Lewis)

What makes spicy kittens so irresistible? Maybe we just love a challenging project
or knowing that in a short time you can permanently change the trajectory of this cat's life.
Socializing kittens is not hard but it does require a tremendous amount of time, patience,
and love and that can be in short supply during a busy kitten season.
This is Huey and Louis. They were trapped outside as part of a litter of five.
We split them up sending three kittens to one foster and we paired the spiciest kitten of all,
Louis, with a very chill sibling that he could learn from.
The first day of any new journey can be scary.
These kittens have spent their entire short lives outside without exposure to people.
One of your first tests is to find out if they will eat while you are present.
This gives you a good sense of how long it might take to get them ready for a forever home.
Baby Huey was pretty much good to go after one day of VIP life.
So we focused more of our time on Louis
who needed a lot more convincing. I can't emphasize enough that food is the best
motivator you have at this stage. They should only eat when you are around. Don't leave food
behind. Spend time with them during and before each meal and always bring treats, lots of treats.
My favorite part of the process is when they also learn that scritches are amazing. There's
nothing like that first moment. You can see him trying to process this thing that was such a scary
threat is actually a source of love and comfort. His worldview has changed. Even after you make
progress, you'll need to reinforce your routine with consistency. Spend a lot of time with them.
Hopefully you can see just how important your role as a foster parent is here. You're saving
their lives. And I think that is actually the biggest challenge with socializing spicy kittens
because you often spend hours a day with each one. You can develop a pretty strong bond.
They trust you and feel comfortable around you. But saying goodbye is an essential part of the
process because your socializing skills are in high demand. There are simply not enough
foster volunteers like you to help them all. These two are some of the lucky ones.
Thanks to you, we found them a loving forever home where they will never worry about food or
shelter or safety ever again. But there are many more cats outside still waiting for help.
So if you're able to, contact your local shelter or TNR and rescue group and volunteer to foster
a spicy kitten. You will change their world. And as we have fewer kittens born outside,
we'll have more time and resources for each one. That's the power of love.
