The god of Lemnos has forged you
By the hands of immortal Nemesis,
Guardian of liberty, change punisher,
The last tribunal of infamies and offenses.
There where the sword of the law sleeps,
You executor of anathemas and hopes,
You hide in the shadow of the throne,
And of clothes under the splendor.
As infernal ray and divine lightning,
A changing blade in the eyes of the scoundrel,
Who looks around trembling,
In the midst of his own people.
Everywhere your sudden blow will find him:
On the sea, in a temple, on mountains and plains,
Behind secret locks,
During sleep, in the paternal nest.
Beneath Caesar the beloved Rubicon roars,
In Rome the law has bowed its head;
But free Brutus has risen:
Thou, Caesar, hast struck, and Pompey's marble
Now he embraces - now dead.
The seed of revolts raises a furious cry:
Coward, bloodthirsty, wicked,
On the corpse of beheaded liberty
The ugly executioner is born.
