Mexico Sees Progress in Saving Endangered Porpoises

Mexican authorities and conservationists have reported sightings of at least two healthy vaquita marina porpoises. Officials said on Tuesday that the sea mammals were spotted during a September observation cruise in the Gulf of California. Vaquita marinas are the world's most severely endangered marine mammal.
Mexico's Biodiversity Under Secretary Marina Robles Garcia says recent monitoring shows the vaquita population’s decline has halted. She attributes the progress to improved surveillance and international cooperation. Conservationists and the Mexican Navy have worked together to remove illegal gill nets and protect the species from extinction.
