A man is dead after being hit by a car
in Aawam Wednesday night. It's an area
that sees a lot of speeding issues.
That's according to people that live
there. 22 News reporter Kaylee Thomas is
live in studio with the latest on the
incident and reactions from residents.
Nick, that devastating incident took
place in the area of Sufffield in Mill
Street, a section locals tell us h tell
us they've long considered dangerous for
pedestrians due to multiple counts of
speeding, especially after sunset.
Police confirmed the incident happened
around 8:30 p.m. Investigators say the
73-year-old man, who was from Awam, was
attempting to cross Southfield Street
when he was struck by a passing vehicle.
The victim was then transported
immediately to Bayate Medical Center
where he later died from his injuries.
His name has not yet been released. One
resident who lives nearby recalls
hearing the incident, a loud sound she
says she won't soon re soon forget.
>> It sounded like a an a car collision,
but it was, you know, that we later
found out what happened. Um, we didn't
actually see it happen, but, you know,
we heard from next door. We were outside
watching the chaos and you know we heard
that somebody was hit and it was it was
unfortunate.
>> Alexa says as a mother it's important to
have greater safety measures for those
walking or biking in the area. She says
she'd like to see a pedestrian push
button installed at all crosswalks to
hold the traffic. Currently there's only
two crosswalks at the intersection and
she said she'd also like to see two more
be put in. Investigators believe that
speed was not a contributing factor in
the crash. At this time, the crash
remains under investigation.
