Floating Glass Living Room | South 5th Residence
#South5thResidence #Alterstudio #AustinArchitecture
South 5th Residence features a glass-walled living area that seems to float above a steep slope, a central courtyard organized around a rare Durand oak, and a U-shaped spatial sequence that preserves tree roots while maximizing views of the valley.
The entry unfolds through a garden beneath the oak tree, with a slender gabion wall along the street and perforated corten steel screens that create privacy and a sense of movement on the façade.
The social spaces are elevated to avoid interfering with the root system, while bedrooms and bathrooms occupy the front block. A cantilever above the garage and a large corner window frame the surrounding neighborhood.
Materials include cast-in-place concrete, hot-rolled steel, raw plaster, and site-glazed openings with rift-sawn white oak and steel flitch-plate mullions.
Floor-to-ceiling glass panels frame both the courtyard and the valley, ensuring abundant natural light and cross-ventilation through operable vents.
On the lower level, a secondary, more intimate living space opens toward the treetops; above, the primary suite features a private terrace and a bathroom finished in white tile and wood.
A project that balances inventiveness and restraint within the Bouldin neighborhood, it offers a calm and precise response to site, light, and landscape.
