How's it going everybody? Welcome back, I'm Leo.
Today we are going to talk about the most common questions Chinese people might ask you as a foreigner.
If you have been to China, you know what I'm talking about.
So let's go and break down the five most common questions people might ask you.
Question number one, where are you from? 你是哪里人?
This is always question number one, not hello, not how are you, not do you need help.
Nope, straight into the point. 你是哪里人? Where are you from?
In China, it's totally normal to start with this.
I'm not talking about Beijing, Shanghai or Shenzhen, Guangzhou.
So I live in a quite big but not too international city.
And my foreign friends still have this happening all the time.
Because people are curious and seeing a foreigner is still exciting in many parts of the country.
It's not invasive, it's kind of like seeing a celebrity walk by.
So let's be honest, if you look different, they are gonna ask.
You can either answer honestly like 我是美国人, 我是加拿大人,
I am American, I am Canadian.
Or if you're feeling cheeky, you can say 我是地球人, I'm from Earth.
OK, that's question number one.
Now number two, 你会说中文吗? Can you speak Chinese?
Right after they know where you're from, they want to know do you speak Chinese?
你会说中文吗? And here's why they ask.
In China, foreigners speaking fluent Chinese is still not very common.
So if they hear you speak even a little Chinese, they get so excited.
But here's the trap.
If you say yes, they go full speed Mandarin mode.
I assume you are a beginner, so here's how to answer.
Or you can say I'm learning Chinese.
And if they reply with something super fast, just nod and pretend you understood.
OK, let's move on.
And then it's time to get real personal real quick.
Let's say you are buying bubble tea and get caught by Chinese aunties.
If you look really young, they might ask you do you have a boyfriend?
Do you have a girlfriend?
And if you look more mature, they'll be curious about your marriage.
Like are you married? 你结婚了吗?
Or do you have kids? 你有孩子吗?
If you want to be completely honest, you can say 结婚了, I'm married.
Or 还没, not yet.
If you want to keep a secret, just smile, shrug, and say
I don't understand.
Or for fun, you can try
Now get ready for some super curious following questions like what's your type?
OK, number four.
How old are you?
How old are you is just normal curiosity, not age shaming.
Because age helps people figure out how to address you.
Like are you a 哥, older bro?
Or 妹妹, younger sis?
It's really really important to Chinese.
You can answer something like
I'm 30 years old.
But if you want to keep it mysterious, you can say
And then comes the final boss question.
Because they want to hear you say good things.
It's kind of like your wife asking you
There's only one correct answer, OK?
But it's also a way to connect.
If you say yes, their face lights up like a new year firework.
If you say no, and the room gets real quiet.
So now you're ready.
Remember, these questions aren't rude.
It's like a speed dating version of friendship.
Thanks for watching.
