The Moon Song
Lyrics:
Moon:
I’m your moon, Earth’s natural satellite
Your gravity keeps me by your side
I’m smaller than you, but I pull the tide
As I orbit near Earth’s equator
With an iron core and a rocky crust
And my regolith moon dust
And Tycho, and Byrgius,
And Kepler among my craters
(Waxing, waning
Getting brighter, then fading)
Less than 30 days, and it starts anew
(Eight moon phases
Look opposite from different places)
That’s the light of the Sun I’m reflecting to you
I am your Moon
I’ve loved all your human and robot trips
Have you seen a solar or lunar eclipse:
When I come between you and the sun
Or hide on the other side?
I don’t have much air for you to breathe
And I’m small, so there’s less gravity
You always see the same side of me,
Because I orbit and rotate in the same length of time
Earth:
The New Moon looks dark with the Sun on it’s back
We see a Waxing Crescent, and the rest is black
A First Quarter moon shines when the Sun lights up half
Next a Waxing Gibbous, like in this photograph
A Full Moon is bright, when the whole moon is lit
A Waning Gibbous, is when it darkens a bit
A Third Quarter Moon, we see half of it
Then a Waning Crescent, a dimming slit
All:
Waxing, waning
Getting brighter, then fading
Moon:
Less than 30 days, and it starts anew
All:
Eight moon phases
Look opposite from different places
Moon:
That’s the light of the Sun I’m reflecting to you
I am your Moon
Your Moon
Your Moon
