Part I discusses Elgin National Watch Company's 27 jewel self-winding watches, marketed as the "Thin-Thin" or "Thinline" series starting in 1959 and continuing in the early 1960s. Elgin is widely considered to have created the only American-designed and made automatic watches, all built at the company's historic Main Plant in Elgin, Illinois. These luxury watches used Elgin's innovative "761" watch movement and were one of the great technological and aesthetic achievements of the final days of American watchmaking. Part II of this video will discuss the closely related 30 jewel automatic watches made for Elgin's top-end "Lord Elgin" line.
