Saving Dora's Puppies (13 April 2025)
We Need Help For The Cost Of Raising Her Puppies!!!!
Yesterday we caught this beautiful girl, who's name is Dora. You all saw her in the video last night once we returned to the base with the other dogs. The original plan was to get her sterilized, vaccinated, and returned to the enclave where she lives along with two other dogs we darted and caught there.
Plans change, and some change because we make them change, with others changing because we have no control over them. For Dora, her plans changed because we made them change. Seeing her in the field before I darted her I could see she was very pregnant. Then when we got to her in the field, I could see her teats were engorged and she was actually ready to lactate.
There are just times when we have to take our personal emotions and not put them aside. This was one of them. I just could not allow her to be spayed. Knowing that she is days away from giving birth, it is something that just goes against everything inside me to happen. And I was ready to fight my fight and make my case about this.
I told Marina that I just could not do it, and explained to her why. After much back and forth, it finally hit home with her when I told her that spaying her now and aborting her puppies would be like Marina carrying a baby for 9 months, and being forced to abort it a few days before she gave birth. The point was made, but then the worry about caring for all these puppies came up.
GARR has committed to helping Marina cover costs for Dora's puppies until they are weaned and able to go to new homes. Not only is allowing her to have her puppies the right thing to do, but so is helping her with their care. If we are going to stand up for something, we are absolutely going to stay by that decision and support it through to the end.
We understand both sides of this argument regarding the situation. We know there is a population problem with so many unwanted animals. But we also feel and know that if a life is viable to live outside of the womb, it should have the chance to do so. I even spoke to one of the head vets on this and he agreed, saying that he would side with me on this one.
Today Dora was taken to a safe place to have her puppies, raise them, and then get spayed in a few months. We will share photos of her puppies and their progress as they grow. But most importantly, we will continue to do what we feel as right for those who cannot speak for themselves.
