Hey folks—Kevin Hunter here, rapidly closing in on the start of our 17th year helping car buyers. Today, Elizabeth and I are tag-teaming on a crash course on the used-car market: what’s happening, what’s next, and which cars are the smartest buys right now.
So what’s the Car Market forecast? We’re laying this out in three time horizons:
Next 3–6 months: Seasonal softness in late fall early winter favors buyers, especially on models with lots of units on lots. Shopping with flexibility on your demands really pays off.
6–12 months: More lease returns trickle in. Some segments—mid-size sedans and non-hybrid compact SUVs—see gradual normalization.
12–24 months: Because this gets a bit further out, truthfully, making an accurate prediction gets a little more challenging, Broader rebalancing happens as supply catches up. But the “reliable + efficient” tax? Still there. The market keeps paying extra for low ownership headaches.
Segment snapshots!
Compact/Mid-size sedans: Underrated values. Smart commuters, lower insurance, and more plentiful inventory than the headline SUV darlings.
Compact crossovers: Perennially popular; good ones hold value. You win by buying clean, high-trim examples just off warranty rather than overpaying for ultra-low miles.
Three-row SUVs: Still strong demand; you’ll find best value in non-luxury trims and V6 models that sip reasonably and have long maintenance intervals.
EVs: Price dispersion. Some used EVs are bargains because of rapid tech turnover and range anxiety. Great if your daily use fits their envelope.
Hybrids: High demand + scarce supply = resilient pricing, but they still pencil out thanks to fuel savings and durability (especially with Toyota/Honda systems).
