Uma Thurman, Charlize Theron and Kiki Layne chat with ET's Denny Directo about 'The Old Guard 2,' streaming July 2 on Netflix. Charlize opens up about how she asked Uma to be in this movie and the two how knew it was meant to be. Plus, Uma shares what it was like picking back up a sword 20 years after the 'Kill Bill' films.
Congratulations on this film.
Thank you.
I gotta tell you, what I love about this movie, and the first one too, is that everyone gets a kick butt in it.
You know, it's truly an ensemble piece.
You and your friends don't have much time left.
Do you think she knows that I've lost my immortality?
The thing that lives, lives forever.
But of course, having like two action titans in the same movie together as a movie fan is so thrilling.
And of course, Charlize, I know that you wrote Uma asking her to do this movie.
Yeah.
But email still is personal.
I did a lot of rewriting on it, and I was very nervous about that email letter.
It worked.
Yeah.
There's something weird too, which is on my personal emails, there's a thing where I put a purple heart at the bottom of my personal emails.
And her email has a purple heart on it.
Was that the sign?
I know that's a little weird.
No, but it's not.
Like, that was our same sign off.
Yeah.
Wow.
And I had been doing that for a few years.
Same.
And then I see that, I don't know, I kind of just felt like-
No, I saw that too, by the way, just so you know.
I saw that too.
Yeah.
It was a little weird.
Yeah, I love that.
And I'm sure she just thought I was copying her.
Well, actually, I have the emails to prove it.
I know I had a spy.
I was like, tell me something that I can do that would make her feel like this is meant to be.
I believe in science, and that feels like that's a big sign, you know?
Charlize, why was Uma the person that you wanted for this role and in this movie?
There are many reasons, but I would say the two biggest.
She's always, to me, been a woman that I've admired because of how she has raised the bar in action.
I've loved her.
I've loved Uma in everything that she's done.
Like, I can watch her.
She's one of those actors that-
Except I'm a little over the top.
In all the right ways.
I love it all.
I have also heard so many people say to me,
you guys need to do an action movie.
I mean, if I had a dollar for every time somebody said that to me,
I would be, yeah, not sitting here right now.
And then we're finally, it's the payoff.
It's the payoff.
It's finally happening.
Yeah, and it felt like it was the right time, too, you know?
It didn't come from a forceful place.
Well, we can still walk.
Yes!
And while you can still swing a sword, Uma.
I mean, was it like riding a bike?
Have you picked up a sword since Kill Bill?
I've picked up some tools.
Describe the tools.
A sword is very specific.
It is?
A sword is very specific.
Was it like riding a bike?
It was like a dance.
Okay.
We'll take that.
Yeah.
I love it.
Kiki, working with Charlize and Uma in this, I mean, was it,
I feel like it's an actor's dream to be in this kind of movie, period,
but also to share the screen with these two.
What was that like for you?
Oh, it's amazing.
Yeah.
I mean, what they have done for women in the action genre,
so to be able to do an action film with them and learn firsthand
and also to see, like, it's a lot of work, you know?
You gotta really push yourself and seeing them do that,
seeing them push past their limits, push through the pain, the bruise.
Oh.
Girl.
Look, in the, what was it?
Two, three years between the first and the second film, I was like,
y'all got jokes.
But by the way, in those two to three years, did you stay ready,
just waiting for the sequel to happen?
Stay ready.
You know, like, were you keeping up with the training, Kiki?
I got the calls, you know, and then I was like, I guess I should,
you know, make some adjustments.
Yes.
Well, you look like you stayed ready, just so you know.
I was gonna say the same thing.
You all made it look so easy.
I'm like, I could never do any of this.
I'm watching this on my couch, but you guys made it look so effortless.
Uma, how special is it for you to be on this Netflix slate
the same year as your daughter Maya in Stranger Things final season?
Oh, it's the best.
I know.
I'm the proudest parent.
I bet.
I mean, I'm more proud of my children than anything in the world, so.
It is amazing.
I love you, Kiki, but it was nice to have a mom.
I always feel like I bombarded Kiki with videos.
I'm like, look at my daughter.
I love it, though.
I have seven nieces and nephews.
I know you love them.
I've got children.
But it was so amazing when you shared that song with me that one night.
I was like, oh my God, I know what it feels like when you're so proud.
I think there is really truly nothing more important to anyone.
Yeah.
It's amazing.
And also, are you a fan of Stranger Things like the rest of us?
I was a big fan of it before she was.
Oh, amazing.
Before she was on it.
Yeah.
Huge fan.
What a cool call to get.
Obviously, this movie was a long time in the making.
It took five years.
Charlize, how proud are you to finally be able to share this sequel with the world?
We sat down here today and I was saying to the two of them that this is truly the happiest
day of my life because this was a hard movie to make and we're here and people are really
responding to it and they're excited about it and the fans can't stop talking about it.
And I feel like we really accomplished something.
We're playing right into her hands.
I don't have a choice.
One day you'll understand.
I really felt like this was not a, okay, this is day 15.
We were just grinding it and I couldn't have asked for just a better team because there
was a lot of things that were very last minute and at midnight and at 6 a.m.
But we're here and I think we're all really proud of the movie.
I love it.
And finally, Uma and Charlize, if you could go back and do a sequel to any of your iconic
action movies, what would it be?
Which role would you most want to revisit at this point?
Oh my God, I don't know.
I don't know either.
I don't know.
I'm ready for another Atomic Blonde.
Oh, okay.
Okay.
Well, we are working on that.
So that's good to know.
Yes.
Okay.
Perfect.
People want it.
Just letting you know.
Good to know we're not wasting our time on that.
Right.
