California went on with the first law in its legislation, which regulates AI chatbots.
On October 13, Governor Gavin Newsom signed the bill.
The decision comes after worrying reports of teenage suicide,
where chatbots play a role in the events that preceded the death.
Brian Downing, assistant professor of law, talks about the legality of interactions with chatbots.
There has been a kind of hashing out in the courts right now,
especially in cases involving user suicides, where the harm is great,
and there was communication directly with the user via this chatbot platform.
Governor Newsom said,
"...advanced technology such as chatbots and social media can inspire, educate and create contact,
but without clear protections the technology can also exploit, mislead and expose our children to danger."
According to the new law, minors must be reminded to take breaks
and be protected from being exposed to sexually explicit images generated by chatbots.
Age verification will also be required to prevent children from access to inappropriate or dangerous content on the Internet.
Additional protection measures include warning labels that remind children of the risks
with long-term use of social media.
There will also be stricter penalties for people who make money on illegal deepfake content.
David Lam reported for NTD News from California.
