Welcome to Ghent, Belgium. From medieval castles to unique craft beers, windy canals and mouth-watering
Belgian treats, we're packing as much as we can into 24 hours in this underrated gem.
We arrived here to Ghent by train, of course. It is our fifth country on our 10 country train
journey. Why do I'm not saying this correctly? We met up with Tommy's parents in Amsterdam and
they are joining us again in today's video. Whether you're planning a quick trip or just
love discovering new places with us, you're in for a really fun day. Let's dive in to Ghent.
Ladies and gentlemen, Belgian waffles with the works. Strawberries, bananas, chocolate sauce.
14 euros. How is it? Delicious. Is it good? Yeah. Such good waffles. Crispy on the outside,
very soft in the middle with the fresh strawberries and all this whipped cream.
Very good. Atelier and we've ordered two different types of fries. We got one with the Flemish
beef stew and then the other one is parmesan fries with basil, mayo, aioli. That was hard to get out.
And then we also got this spicy Andalus sausage. That looks so good. I know it does. The beef stew one
was 11.50 euro and then the parmesan ones are 7.50 euro. I want to try this Andalus
sausage she recommended. She said it was a little bit spicy so I said I need it.
It's just not very spicy. It's more like spiced. That makes sense. It's really good.
That is so so delicious. That beef just melts in your mouth. I love this. I wasn't expecting to
like it so much. I guess it makes sense like potatoes with stew. Jackie, try that one. Well
he took my bite. That one piece with a big piece of meat on it. You were eyeing it. I was. Dad,
what'd you get? Carmelite. Belgian beer. I think it's supposed to have a caramel flavor.
I asked him if it's the best. He said it's the strongest. And it looks like it's been since 1679.
Try it out. Look at that glass. It's so pretty. I love the fleur-de-lis on it.
No, it's great. Wow, that's good. Yeah, I'm so excited. You're gonna have to get your own now.
Cheers, you guys. First of many.
Wow, that has so much flavor. Oh, that's so smooth too.
Wow, this is an amazing start. So I just looked up the french fries origin. So both France and
Belgium claim they created it. Belgians were frying potatoes in the late 1600s.
And then they would usually fry small fish, but their river froze that year. So instead they tried
to do potatoes, which they fried them. And then American soldiers who tried them named them french
fries because the language spoken in that Belgium area was French. So that's where the debate comes
in. But thank goodness they created them that day. We are big fans in America.
Ate every last fry. We're staying like two blocks over. You can definitely see myself
like running down here eating a little fry by myself. So we just left the fry place.
And now we just go right over here. We have a candy shop we're gonna try out. And a mustard place.
Thank you. And it's very, it's super fresh. It's really strong right now.
Oh wow, it's very fragrant, very horseradishy. I almost made my eyes water. Yeah, it's so good
though. Do you make it with horseradish? No, it's only mustard seeds, vinegar and salt.
Wow, that's amazing.
Give it a second. So which one is this one? So, well yeah, it's our own. We only make one mustard.
So yeah, it's the mustard. Oh my gosh, I love that. Isn't that good? I love it. You gotta buy some.
Wow. Sold. Perfect. I love that so much. Thank you. Oh my gosh, that is so good. If you preferred a whole
green version, you can choose one of these three sizes. But then once you're home,
it's over here. So they're a bit smaller than the lighter ones. And the dark mustard seeds
are a bit spicier than the light ones. So they have a bit more of that kick to them.
The perfect takeaway souvenir. Jackie said she could manage to get this one home for us.
And then we're gonna have this one to eat along the way as we travel. Yum. Yum. That was
so good. Mustard seeds, vinegar and salt. And it tastes like horseradish-y. The guy was so nice
too. Explained everything. He showed us the seeds. Yeah. He also showed us how it's pumped from down
below. It's fresh every day. He was so nice. Icy, wasn't it? Yeah. Yeah, it's a fabulous mustard.
Best mustard I've ever had. Me too.
So that was St. Bobo's Cathedral. I really like the like gothic style architecture. It's
absolutely beautiful in there with like the stained glass windows. So there's a free section,
which is just like the interior of the church. And then you can pay 12 euros to go see like the
famous painting that's housed here. The something. The Mystic Lamb. However, the painting is being
restored right now. So we weren't going to pay 12 euros anyway, but your mom was so funny. She
was like, if only half of the painting is here, can I get in for six euros?
We just made it into Graventon Castle. The 12 euro 50 each. And it comes with an audio guide.
There's two different audio guides. You can do a one hour comedy tour or like a 30 minute
fast paced one. We went with the one hour one because we really don't have anything else going
on. So why not? So when you get on top of the stairs, this room is so cool. It has a bunch of
like plate armor, chain mail, spears, daggers, different types of crossbows. Pretty awesome,
actually. Enjoying the view? Yeah, I am. It's a really nice view up there of the river. Did you
get it? Yeah. It's really pretty. The audio guides a little lengthy, but he is funny. But maybe we
should have went with the 30 minute tour. Can you imagine wearing that like 10 hours a day?
I would just be doing this all day because I love the sound.
This is the light stuff too. I hate the way that metal smells.
Ready for some Belgian chocolate. Cut the tour short and get some chocolate and some beer and
chocolate and beer. It's near. Oh, nerd.
All right, what do you guys think? You know, I really like the tour. I
really like some of the views, but I also got a real feeling maybe of life back in the days,
you know, and a little bit of the history, even though it was kind of
a little bit comical. But you still got a real good feel of the way things were back then.
They get a mix of all of them, all different flavors.
This little bag of candy was 15 euros. I feel like that's expensive, but
so what we have here is the local sweet treat. It's called a Couperdon. Anyway,
it's a hard candy that has like a liquid filling. It's like a little cone. They also call them
little noses. New secies? New something. Little noses. I don't know the word for that.
Okay, but there's a cool story behind this. It was like invented by a pharmacist.
So he was trying to figure out a way to like make the medicine last longer. And you know how like
medicine, when you add, when it has like sugar, like that great flavored medicine,
it gets like crystallized. Well, he figured he could like crystallize it on the outside. And
then the inside is like a liquid center. So he could transport the medicine or like make it last
longer. This is not medicine, but the candy formed from that, that descent. But it's, they
don't export it because it has a shelf life since the liquid center kind of like gets hard after a
while. You can only find it here in Belgium. You can only find it here. Got an assortment of
flavors. This is the fruit marmalade, so red fruits. And then there's apple, lemon, and
strawberry as well. And the original is raspberry actually, right? This, the original is fruit
marmalade, raspberry, strawberries, et cetera. That's this one, the original. Should I take a
chunk out of it, out of this little nose? Go for it. Oh, it's much more jelly than I thought it
was going to be. I actually thought it was gonna be like crystallized. It's like a gummy bear,
like a medicine gummy bear. So mine does not taste like medicine at all. I've got apple,
just a delicious gummy candy. I like them. I knew you would.
It's not great. So my favorite thing about Belgium, besides the beers,
are just when you're walking the streets and you just get the waft of the, the fresh waffles.
The aromas of the waffles. Oh my God, it is amazing. Makes me want to buy one every time.
I'm going to resist right now though. After all of that sightseeing, we still
want to get just a couple of things. It is time for some beers and this is the place.
Highlight. Highlight.
That's a really cool bar you picked out. Yes, isn't it very cool in here?
Did you see the shoes up there? You just put one in there.
Shoes? Did you see the dead people hanging from the ceiling?
We just made it to this tavern Sammy picked out. They have a very unique way to prevent theft.
So they're known for these beer glasses and to order the beer, you have to give up a shoe,
which they hoist up and hold for you until you finish and return your glass.
It's a funny way to prevent theft. All right. The shoe is official. Thank you.
All right. Thank you.
Look at this beautiful thing.
So on the menu it says, if you break the glass, it costs you 90 euros.
You don't want to mess around with this thing.
Actually a good, good flavor again for a blonde. I'm always surprised.
We never order blonde ales back home, but they're good here.
All it takes is a beer to really get in your mood.
Um, what was I going to say again? I forget now. Short-term memory loss, among other things.
Really? What was I going to say? My feet got a little cold. My one foot.
I, I bear one ear.
Cheers.
We've come to dinner and we've ordered a variety of traditional
Flemish dishes, traditional dishes from Ghent. I have the water Zoe, such a cute name. Um,
it's basically like a chicken stew. It has chicken, potatoes, carrots, leeks,
a little sprinkle of green onions on top. Um, a really luscious looking broth. Actually,
it looks a lot thicker than I thought it was going to be more like chicken soup,
but it's looking more like chicken stew, which I'm excited about. It looks very cozy and colorful.
So I ordered the Flemish stew, which is very popular here. We had it with our fries earlier
and it was just fantastic. So I had to get it for the main course today. So it's a Belgian beef and
onion stew that's slow cooked in beer and seasoned with mustard and herbs. We had the mustard. It was
like the best mustard ever. The Belgian beer here is amazing. How can this not be fantastic? Very
excited for it. The beef is cooked to perfection. It is super tender and the sauce has so much
flavor. I don't get hints of the beer, the onion, but whatever it is, it's, it's so perfect.
We ordered the butt cheeks.
The old people ordered the cheeks.
Okay, that's fine. Okay. We ordered the pork belly cheeks, which
look divine. Can't wait to put my teeth into that thing. Tender. The sauce is amazing.
Really, really good. You like it? Thumbs up. Okay, and we've got some fries and I'm digging
into this. Well, it was a wonderful ending to a great get together. You know, it was nice to
being able to meet while we're both on separate trips. It was weird that it worked out that way.
Yeah. I'm so glad it did. It's nice. Yeah. So we're going to honor to our own trip and we'll see you
at home sometime. Yeah. So we just finished our meal and oh my gosh, the two waitress who worked
there were beyond sweet. So adorable and sweet and friendly. Yeah. So prices were expensive,
but the food is worth it. It was very good. And the people who served us were 10 out of 10
recommend because they were just, they made the whole experience just so good.
Hey, it's such a fantastic. I'll try it again. I'm squatting down. It's kind of hard.
Such a great time traveling with you guys. We feel so lucky to be able to share so many
travels together. You know what I mean? Such a fun time. So it went by way too fast though, right?
Yeah. This last, I think 10 days went by really, really quickly for all of us. Thanks for letting
us hang out with you. It's fun. So much fun. We love you guys. Thank you guys for watching.
Appreciate you. See you guys in the next video. Bye. Bye.
