In this tutorial, I explore the calming process of creating organic abstract shapes with watercolor in soothing shades of blue and green. Working in one of my handmade journals on beautiful, textured paper, I leave intentional white space around the shapes to allow for a harmonious composition. Once dry, I come back to add intricate mark-making details that bring the piece to life. This relaxing exercise is perfect for anyone looking to create abstract art in a mindful way, whether you're working on loose paper or in a journal. Join me in this calming and creative journey!

Hello everyone, welcome back. Today I thought we would paint this page that's sitting beside
the concentric circles that we painted and I think I'm going to stay in my Masha's watercolors
essential set for this page so that I'm kind of matching colors even if I'm doing a little bit
different style and I kind of think you know I was about to use my Raphael soft aqua brush
but I'm kind of thinking what if we use a big brush and just see what we get so this is the
Princeton Neptune square wash quarter inch and this is a three quarter inch and this is one of
those in that little four set of brushes that I really really like the Neptune artist set series
is it Neptune or did I just make that up oh no these are Neptune
oh my gosh sometimes I just make stuff up
so I'm going to use the big wash brush I'm going to do one of our yummy abstracts I'm
working on a cold press page here so I'm pretty sure that might be the
Arches cold press or the Hahnemühle and I'm going to do a big color maybe maybe some of my
favorite little ovals and then mark making it's kind of my goal for today and I'm just sticking
in the same little color palette here and just seeing like what we can end up with
I really like this color so I want it to be kind of darker on here too
I didn't use this color in here but let's see what color is that it's kind of a
not the way I want to go let's see how about maybe this orange let's throw
don't want to throw that orange in there
maybe not for this piece maybe I'll stick in my little color palette here just to
we can we can add some more color in with our mark making
look how fun this is all right I'm gonna let this dry and see where we're at and then we'll mark
make on top of it all right we're not a hundred percent dry but we're getting there and I thought
what I could do was maybe take my mechanical pencil to start with and I think I'm going to
maybe draw some shapes in here just to be like part of like the background and I'm just going
to use my big paint stick this is a five gallon bucket paint store stick from the paint store
somebody said in the UK they couldn't find a big long wood stick and I said well try your paint
stores because that's where this one came from and I'm just kind of thinking that maybe I could
add some shape in here just as an underlying kind of pattern that maybe you're like what is that and
I'm not sure and being inspired by the concentric circles they're just a very light kind of concentric
circly thing in the background that isn't going to be something that jumps off the page at you
but might be very interesting if you got close enough to see it and think what is that in the
background that I'm seeing in there so that's kind of what I'm drawing just a little extra
in the background let's see if that'll get where you can see that it's very light it's kind of
just like it's underneath and you're like oh what is that in there just as an idea of something that
we can add and I'm thinking that we could do almost feeling like maybe we should get out
maybe even like the punchinella because I like punchinella hadn't got it out in a little while
which you may not have noticed seeing as how a lot of times when I'm doing these I'm working
ahead but I have not had stencils out on my table in a little while and so I'm kind of feeling like
maybe a little bit of stencil work in here might make me happy and the circles and you can get
punchinella stencils you can get this ribbon bit at like the fabric store and I'm kind of wondering
if I want like a little bit of some black and I've got a little bit larger and I've got a stencil
somewhere in my stencil box but maybe a little bit larger maybe smaller kind of like the smaller
and maybe some black paint so thinking that could be like my little touch of black
um that I like to sometimes draw on here but today I think I'm going to let the punchinella
give me some black just put a little back I'm using the Blick matte paint
oop there we go um because that's I like it and my little artist sponges that I just kind of keep
on the table and I want dry sponge and not too much paint so kind of dry paint and I'm kind of
going to come in at an organic-y kind of angle shape it doesn't have to be perfect I'm not looking
for oh I like that might have had too much paint in a couple of those spots but that's okay
oh that's super fun a little bit different all right so I'm liking that
put that sponge down into some water and I'm kind of feeling like we could fill in with some
mark making to really make that blend and I might do that with the micron pen and I'm using my paint
stick as a hand rest so that hopefully I don't end up um smearing anything that's still wet
oh I like that I could have done that with my
pencil too like one of my bold pencils that would have been a good choice
okay that's kind of fun feel like I need some gold in here so don't want gold dots don't want
gold lines don't want some other color in here let's think here for a second maybe I want
oh I did kind of like this color over here this kind of number 69 and these arctics markers
um so I could oh you know what we should get out wait a minute we should get out some of our
neocolor to crayons oh that's a good color I don't know what color that is but I broke it
let's see that's a fun color um and make some marks with these maybe I haven't had these out
in a while malachite green so do I want to do some color do I want to do some lines
decisions decisions okay I'm gonna do a big let's do big splotches of color
oh I like that okay I like that and I feel like we need some gold let me shake it around
because then we'll still pull the gold in from here so our pieces aren't identical but they are
you know very similar so kind of feeling like that concentric circle thing that had go in there is
kind of where I was kind of going there and maybe some dots and to keep more control of the bottle
on this fine line applicator tip that I've got my gold mic ink in I just basically work with it
kind of parallel to the paper and then when I'm done I can put this little needle tip cap back on
and it keeps that from clogging so I do like this with that okay so we're going to let this dry I
think I'm there let's let it dry and then I'll peel that tape all right let's see what we got
oh I'm excited oh cold press see that cold press I think that's the arches
just tape just peels off of it like magic I love it oh I love these abstracts oh let's just get
that right there look how pretty oh I love it and see with the pretty tape and the seam I love it
I just don't like the seam on some of the books as much as as much as I like I don't even like it
on the ones that are made with signatures I just thought and that'd be pretty in there all right
look how amazing this spread ended up I'm thrilled with this I like that we're kind of coordinating
you know we've got lots of yummy ones here as we flip through look at all of these yummy ones that
we have finished already I love it if we go back this away just to give you a glance how fun it is
when you work in a book with your favorite watercolor papers and then when you're done
you can flip through and look at all of the beautiful pieces I need to do that one next
that you've created look how gorgeous this book is and one day I'll go back and finish the one that
I forgot to film one one of these videos I'll be like look I did it
all right so I hope you enjoyed this two-page spread and painting with
me today with this lovely abstract and I'll see you guys next time
