Whether you’re shopping new, used, gas, diesel, or even electric — we’re going to break down every brand, what makes trucks different to buy than SUVs and cars, and how to avoid the biggest dealer traps set for truck buyers.
Here’s the problem: Our main truck coach says: “Trucks are the most profitable vehicles for dealerships — which means they’re the hardest to get a fair deal on. Before you spend $50,000, $70,000, or even $90,000 on a truck, let’s go over some things you must know first.”
Today’s show will include a lot of input directly from one of the most skilled truck buying coaches in the country, and he happens to be a member of our car buying staff. I can say that he regularly gives a nice boost to our total average savings for our car buying clients. He saves an amazing amount of money for everyone we send him.
Compact & Lifestyle Pickups
The Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz lead this segment. Mavericks start around $24,000 new, but dealer markups can easily push them past $30,000. The cheapest markets? Texas and Florida, where Ford moves more volume.
Don’t forget the Honda Ridgeline. It’s technically midsize, but many buyers cross-shop it here. Used Ridgelines under 50,000 miles are selling in the low-to-mid $30Ks, especially in Midwest markets. Buyers love their comfort, but resale isn’t as strong as a Toyota Tacoma.
Midsize Trucks
This is where competition gets fierce: Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, Nissan Frontier, Jeep Gladiator, and the new INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster.
Tacoma: king of resale in this class. A 3-year-old Tacoma still commands 75–80% of original MSRP. Cheapest deals? Often in the Southwest where inventory is higher.

Ranger: cheaper up front, with used 2022–2023 models in the mid-$20Ks in the Midwest auctions.

Colorado & Canyon: better deals than Toyota, but depreciation is faster.

Frontier: very underrated — you’ll see low-$30Ks for 2023 used with under 20k miles in Southeast markets.

Gladiator: fun but pricey. Even 3-year-old Gladiators run $35K–$45K, though Arizona and Nevada tend to have the cheapest used listings.
Now on to Full-Size Half-Ton Trucks

This class of trucks is the bread and butter: Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Ram 1500, Toyota Tundra, and the discontinued Nissan Titan.
F-150: Most popular truck in America. Used 2023 F-150 XLT 4x4s are around $40K–$45K nationwide, with the best bargains in Oklahoma and Texas.

Silverado & Sierra 1500: Similar pricing, but GM often has better rebates. Expect $2,000–$3,000 cheaper in Southern markets compared to Northeast states.

Ram 1500: Known for comfort. Big incentives on new models — often up to $5,000 off MSRP in competitive regions like Florida.

Tundra: High resale, especially hybrids. Used 2022–2023 Tundras still in the $45K–$55K range. Cheapest listings? Desert states.

Titan: Nissan pulled the plug, so resale is soft. A smart buyer can pick up a Titan for $28K–$35K, thousands less than rivals.
Heavy-Duty (¾ Ton & 1 Ton)
For big work: Ford Super Duty, Chevy Silverado 2500/3500 HD, GMC Sierra 2500/3500 HD, Ram 2500/3500.
Ford Super Duty: Prices are steep. A used 2023 F-250 Lariat Power Stroke Diesel runs $65K–$75K. Cheapest? Midwest farm states.

Ram HD: Value play. A 2022 Ram 2500 Cummins often sells for $55K–$60K in Texas auctions, thousands below Ford.

Silverado/Sierra HD: Similar story — Duramax diesels carry a premium, but gas engines are bargains.
