Andrea MONTESINOS CANTU (MEX) | Women Free Skating | #SkateToMilano | 2025 – Beijing
She is six points out of the top five, 23-year-old Andrea Montesinos-Katu.
And Andrea, for me, was an absolute highlight of the short program.
And she said that she's working harder than ever, but also enjoying it more than ever.
We hope now that she enjoys this free skate to the storm.
Well, she has the music, she has the spins, she's got the drama.
She just didn't have the elements, the technical elements today
to get the max score that she would have needed to close that gap of six points.
Yes, Andrea Montesinos-Katu representing Mexico, struggling with this free skate.
But I know I've got a new skater to add to my list of favorites
because anybody that can sustain a spiral as beautifully as she did that right forward outside edge
and anybody that skates with that openness of neckline and armline,
it's just so beautiful to watch, but you can see.
You looked awesome.
You looked awesome and kept pushing through the whole thing.
And Jonathan Mills and Michael Gilman, they are coaches that they're...
She's moved to Toronto to train with them
and she said that the emphasis is on enjoying the journey.
And so they're continuing with that.
They also coach Donovan Carrillo.
So as a teammate there, we can see a really nice takeoff.
Good fight through the air.
Unfortunately, couldn't stabilize the landing.
There's the triple toe loop.
A little bit forward, but gets a foot back for the double toe loop.
She had to be right on top of everything to make it all work today.
The triple salchow.
Good in the air.
And just under-rotated.
Doesn't get the blade all the way around.
Doesn't glide out.
And she has to take the fall.
But good in the air.
Not all the way.
And Andrea, you referenced Donovan Carrillo,
who's laying second in the men's event after the short program.
She said that they grew up together and they were always friendly,
but didn't train in the same place until now.
There's that right forward outside edge spiral.
Look at the armline.
For me, it's the way in which she holds her arms.
It's so welcoming to a performer to view somebody that skates with that openness.
It's like a bird.
Yeah.
The wings are spread.
But now, because she's had this coaching change,
she and Donovan share the ice, they push each other,
and they celebrate their progress.
And she said it's been inspiring and motivating to skate with him.
And hopefully, they'll continue to train.
We don't know what their plans are beyond this Olympic cycle.
But, you know, she's still got time this year.
You can see the qualities.
You mentioned it.
Now you're going to add her to your list.
Me too.
Right?
So there's still time.
Coach.
Yeah, still coaching.
Wave to your friends.
Trying to make sure that she doesn't lose the moment despite the frustration.
94.51.
That is third in the free program with a total competition of 148.10.
And that will put her, for the moment, into second place.
