Have you ever felt like something is missing? Even when life seems full,
like there's a deeper happiness you haven't found yet?
Well, let me tell you a story about two best friends who felt the exact same way.
Once, in ancient India, near the city of Rajagaha, lived two young men named Appatissa and Kalita.
They were inseparable, the best of friends. They had everything a young person could want.
They enjoyed festivals, watched dramas, learned new things, and did good work for their communities.
Life was good. But after a while, they both felt a growing sense of emptiness.
The usual joys of life just weren't fulfilling anymore.
They yearned for something more, a greater, more lasting happiness.
Their quest for meaning first led them to a respected religious teacher named Sanjaya.
They listened to his teachings, but their hearts were still not satisfied.
They wanted to understand the ultimate truth of life, to find a path that led beyond suffering
and death. So, they made a pact. They would go their separate ways to search for this truth.
And whoever found it first would immediately come back and share it with the other.
Appatissa began his search in Rajagaha. One morning, he saw a monk calmly walking from door to door,
collecting food in his alms bowl. There was something extraordinary about this monk.
His every movement was graceful and serene. He had a look of perfect, undisturbed peace that
deeply impressed Appatissa. This, he thought, was the kind of tranquility he was searching for.
He decided to follow the monk. After the monk had finished his meal outside the city,
Appatissa approached him respectfully.
Sir, he asked, you look so calm and peaceful. Who is your teacher? What teachings do you follow?
The monk, whose name was Asaji, replied humbly,
My teacher is the great ascetic of the Skaya clan, the Buddha. I am new to his teachings,
so I can only explain them to you in brief. And then, he shared a simple but profound verse.
Of all things that arise from a cause, the Buddha has told the cause,
and also how they cease to be. This is the teaching of the great ascetic.
In that single moment, a profound understanding dawned on Appatissa. He saw the truth in those
words that everything has a cause, and by removing the cause, the effect also ceases.
He realized this was the path to freedom from sorrow, the deathless state he had been seeking.
Overjoyed, Appatissa remembered his promise. He rushed to find his friend Kalita.
My friend, he exclaimed, I have found it. I have found the path to the truth.
Kalita could see the radiant change in his friend and knew he was speaking from a place
of deep realization. Together, they traveled to the Viluvana monastery to meet the Buddha.
As they approached, the Buddha saw them from a distance and told the monks around him,
look, here come the two who will become my chief disciples.
The Buddha preached the Dhamma to them, and they were both ordained as monks.
Appatissa became known as Suraputta, renowned for his incredible wisdom,
and Kalita became Magalana, known for his miraculous powers.
They became the Buddha's two most trusted and capable disciples,
helping countless others find the path. Their story is not just about finding enlightenment,
it's a beautiful testament to the power of good friendship.
The Buddha himself taught that having good friends is a true blessing.
Good friends are loyal. They keep their promises.
They help each other grow and guide each other away from harm.
They enrich our lives in ways we can't even imagine.
Just as Appatissa and Kalita supported each other on the noblest quest of all,
a true friend can be the greatest companion on our own journey through life.
