Crest Robotics, in collaboration with EarthBuild Technology, has developed Charlotte,
a six-legged semi-autonomous robot created to revolutionize modern construction.
Resembling a spider, Charlotte can efficiently navigate rough and uneven terrain,
enabling it to build structures without relying on scaffolding or cranes.
Its advanced extrusion and compaction system utilizes locally sourced materials such as sand,
soil, crushed brick, and even construction waste to form strong, durable walls.
By integrating material sourcing, mixing and layering into a single automated process,
Charlotte drastically improves building speed and efficiency. It can reportedly
construct the shell of a 200 square meter home in only 24 hours, performing work equivalent to
that of more than a hundred human workers. The system also reduces dependence on fired
bricks and high emission cement, leading to significantly lower carbon output.
Developers envision future versions of Charlotte operating on lunar or martian terrain,
using native soil to build habitats, marking a major leap towards sustainable and autonomous
construction technology. Figure 03
