How's it going everybody? We are back outdoors. It is a beautiful day. What do you think Al?
Oh it's gonna be fun setting up. We could not have gotten better weather. It's late December.
There's, I mean seriously, hardly any snow on the ground. It's got to be like 38 39 degrees.
Yeah. So odd. It's odd and I just don't know where our winter is yet. Like we get a dump of snow
and we're like, yes, winter's here. Then it's like, it all melts away. So it's kind of a snow,
a low snow winter so far and a kind of a wet one too. And it's actually perfect conditions
for the situation we're in right now for this video. We are going to be setting up, sleeping in
the new RBM hot tent. It's the Hexagon Family Style Hot Tent. All five of us are here.
Granite and Cedar are going to get started setting up bunk beds. We are going to get this hot tent
set up. It's going to be a beautiful tent, I do believe. Yeah. Very popular brand here in the US
and in Canada and it's meant for these cold weather climates. So getting a little bit of
break in the super cold to get our bearings on this tent I think will be helpful, especially
as we dive into the thick winter that I know is coming. It's coming. It's gotta be here soon.
All right, first thing we got to do though is unload the tent, get the kids on the bunk beds
while we start pulling out the hot tent for the first time. But first things first, let's get
this truck unloaded. Unload the truck and get our base camp built. Let's do it.
All right, so as you can see this is no small little hot tent. No, this is a monster. It's a beast.
Beast. Yeah, all right. Well, let's haul it over there and get us figured out. So we've got
basically all of our normal camping gear over there. That's food, stoves, water, clothes, etc.
This is the hot tent. This is the footprint. So that's going to help with insulation,
keeping the bottom warm. And dry. And then in this big box here, that's the wood stove. We have
our sleeping bags and wood back there, some food. So we'll kind of, I think we're going to leave
all this. For now. Focus on the tent. Yeah, Kel? Yeah, let's get the tent up while we have daylight.
Let's do it. I think we're down to less than two hours of daylight left.
It's 2.15 in the afternoon. So what time is sunset? 3.37. Oh man, we better get to it. All right,
got about an hour and 15 minutes. So here we go. Just enough snow for this sled to glide any less
and it would be a kind of pain. But check out this spot. Totally beautiful.
And they're going to set up right here in this massive open space.
You guys doing okay on the bunk? Yeah. Remember how it goes? Yeah, it's kind of all coming together.
Yeah, you know, you slap the three together and it's like a puzzle. It's like a puzzle.
All right, Kel. Okay. First of all, the size of this footprint is huge. So you know it's
going to be, I can't wait to see how we pop this thing out. It's going to be fun.
All right, well, we're going to try to roll this thing out. Here you go, Kel.
Yep, let me grab this side. I mean, I'm certainly sure there is a top and a bottom.
It's huge. It's huge. Oh, wow. Which one? This looks like the bottom. Bottom? Okay,
we're going to flip it. What do you think? Look at the buckles.
Wow. This is the hexagon. This is the hexagon? Well, we should have brought another family to
come with us and had a real party. That's huge. Okay, I know what this is. So this is the storage
bag that this will go in. This is a pretty thick quilted feel to the footprint. So that should be
very insulating. We'll go around in it barefoot or just in our socks to see. But to get an idea,
it's a big old footprint. All right, now up next is going to be the tent.
Okay, it looks like a canoe. It's about the size of a canoe.
All right. Oh, wow. There it is. It's awesome. Okay, so it looks like it's just rolled up.
Yeah, obviously it comes with like a big vinyl window covers. We'll see what that is later.
We've got guy lines, stakes. All right, Cal, check it out. This is actually not stakes.
Oh, wow. What is that? Multi-tool hammer. Yeah, it comes with its own hammer,
knife, bottle opener, saw. Dude. Okay. That just comes with it. Nice. And it's metal.
It's like heavy duty. That's awesome. I can see us using that for multiple situations.
Absolutely. All right. Well, somewhere in here are the stakes, but we have all the guy lines.
There's super glue. There's extra buckles. All right, we'll come back to that later. Here's a
big patch. Okay. Okay, because you got to patch it. Oh, I think I'm dropping stuff. Yeah, save
it in the hammer pouch or something. Yeah. Now this is the tent. And it is no joke. It weighs
a lot. But again, you're not going to backpack with this, but I can certainly see snowmobiling,
having a trailer. Even in the summer, if we are all going out on multi-day trips,
where we're driving the Polaris. I mean, this is all, I think, all season situation.
Oh, man. Wait, there's another. Yep. Okay.
You go through the middle. Nope.
Stand it up and then move it over to the middle.
Yeah, this is different.
Okay. Here's the wood stove. The wood stove is here.
So front door is probably over there. All right. So we got the first phase done. Basically,
we have a balance on the footprint opened up. I can see the hot tent pad here and the door is marked.
So we know that the door is here by this patch. Okay. All right. Let's pop it up and see what we
do. There, I got mine. I got mine. She's got hers. I got this one. Okay, cool. This is really
big. All right. It's ridiculously huge. It's like a lodge. All right. Last component is topping up
roof. Oh, there it goes. Wow. Wow, that's so big. Can you do a jumping jack in there?
Pretty big space. So that's the floor? Yeah, we have the floor on top of the footprint. So here,
we'll come right in through the window. Okay. All right. Now we'll do like a proper tour and
that in a little bit, but you can see we've got lots of windows. One, two, three. Okay. I'm seeing
three, four, one, two, three, four, five huge windows. We'll explore those in a little bit.
We've got the wood stove pipe. We've got a zipper door. I have to figure out. Oh,
check this out. We have an awning, you guys. Check it out. That's cool. So this thing must
pop open. Yeah. Somehow it has a pull. Yes. I bet it has a pull there. Yep. All right. Well,
let's get to it and see what we can figure out. But this, look at it. Look at the colors, man.
Super camo. Anybody want to have a sleepover party for their birthdays this year? Yeah. This
is the birthday party, Ted. All right. We're going to get the rest of this figured out. We'll
come back to you in just a few minutes. All right. So while we're getting everything arranged,
I did come across finally the steak bag. You're not going to believe what's in here.
Check, Kelly, check this out. Okay. So what kind of steak is that? It comes with snow steaks.
Look at that. That's hardcore. So you just screw this into the snow and ice. Yeah. So that comes
with, I mean, that many of them. And then beyond that, let's just take a look at one of these
steaks. A regular one? Yeah. Okay. This is not plastic. Check that out. Heavy duty. Okay. So
hopefully we won't bend those. Yeah. We have a history. So I have a hunch you can stick this
down with that hammer. I don't think we need to screw in once. It's just not deep snow,
but that's pretty legit. Okay. So we will continue on getting this whole thing stage set up.
Kids are building the bunk beds and we'll come back to you here in just a few minutes. All right.
So before we start loading in all the gear into the hot tent, let me just show you what we got
so far. So we've got the awning open with these poles that came with it. Okay. I'm a five foot 11,
so perfectly fit. I rolled up this door. There's the door entrance. And then we have these side
chutes. There's one, two, three of those. So there's plenty of ventilation opportunity. Now
we'll talk more about the details of the layers in a little bit, but I just want to show you what
this looks like. Now the wood stove is going to go here. So we'll have to, yeah, I just, as I
figured a little Velcro bit. So this will roll up a metal ring here and then I'll open the outside
once we're ready for that. But just to show you where that goes, plenty of pockets. So there's one,
two, three, three big pocket stations hanging. And then there's two more of these that are like
just pouches. One there, one there. And then across the bottom, I can see there's these,
so these mesh pockets. So there's like three here. There's one of those, two of those,
three of those, four of these pockets. And then, yeah, all the windows. So
this definitely, I thought for sure this was, I mean, I know this is going to be a winter
tent, but now that I can see how much you can open and have air flow ventilation, I can see
being in the summertime in here and it not being too hot. But either way, I got my center pole
to support so this thing doesn't come down. So we're going to move the bunks in next,
We just made the couch, and then later tonight we'll make into a bed. So we got the other one
already in there set up as a bunk. And yeah, great. You just said we converted this to the
couch mode. We're going to get it in. You want to follow us in, Kelly? Sure. All right, let's do it.
All right, so you can see we're pretty easily going to get all five of us in here. And
probably what we'll do once we're totally set up and see where the wood stove positions,
angle these beds away from that wood stove. This is going to get probably pretty hot in here with
that thing cranking. But you get the idea, even with the one, two, and this is actually two more,
four bunks. It's called the coat hangers. Oh, yeah, we got all types of, I didn't even see
these, Granite, clips all around. In fact, look at that. So there's a clip here and a clip here.
You can hang it. And you know what? I didn't even see the last time was all the pockets
on the roof. You could put a book there or something. Yeah. For the top bunk. Top bunk.
Top bunk and then there's pouches for the bottom bunk. I saw the ones down there. And then you've
got all these. I already pointed these out on video, but you get the idea, right? So there's
just storage everywhere in here. OK, so why don't we get the wood stove next? OK, good. Yeah.
Time check. It is three o'clock. Not a treasure chest, but in fact, check out that wood stove
crate. Oh, yeah. OK, so we got a lot going on in here. This would be the storage bag for it
for after. OK, I know what this is. This is the heat shield to put underneath the wood stove.
Yeah, Cal, so this is the this is the heat shield for the floor. Oh, very nice.
Then I don't have to bring the one that I thought was a heat shield from our house.
Yeah, the one we melted. All right. So here's obviously all the directions.
I think we get it. Yeah, we get it. Colorful. And this is the sidewalls
that will protect the wood stove. Two sheets.
OK. Oh, all right. So the full wood stove is there. It's the attention to detail that I
really think I like. If you look at the inside, that's their mascot. See the bear?
There's the nose. Oh, wow. That's cool. That's where I think it's wearing sunglasses. Yeah. So
is this how you open it? Like this? Yeah. So you've got the flue and this is evergreen trees.
If you see the trees. Yeah. OK, so pull that open and we got a lot of stuff in here.
OK, so we got a pair of leather gloves. Whoa. That cool. Very cool. Yeah. Oh, that's so helpful.
So that's going to be helpful with all the pipe. The pipe is here. All right. So we got some of
the foam. We'll bag that up. We got here. Pull that up. So what do you got there, Cedar? Like
an ash shovel. Yeah, an ash shovel for sure. Like you shove it. You can put that right in that box
behind you. And again, the box even has their emblem. OK, now we got to be real careful. Let's
even get these out. There's one. OK, so we'll take a second. We'll get this flue put together.
I noticed that the draft is up front, which is nice. So it should help with the air circulation.
But yeah, that's looking pretty great. Oh, there's cardboard in here. Let's pull that
all out. That's probably to protect the glass. All right. So we want to align the hole with up
here, Cedar. And you can kind of see how this material just rolls up out of the way, which is
nice. Next step is I've got the inside flue flap open. I got to get this outside flue flap open.
So it's all Velcro fireproof material. In fact, it looks like it even clips in there, but that looks
that's not going anywhere. So you could clip it off if you wanted. There we go. OK, next.
Oh, look at that, Cedar. Look at that. Boom. OK. All right, Callie, what do you think?
That looks awesome. Yeah, that's cool. Wood stove's in? Wood stove is in, ready to go.
All the heat stuff's on the floor. Here, let me show you this. The couches are ready. Couches
are ready. I think we're about to move in. So when you come through here, you can see
where the wood stove sits back and the beds can get far. In fact, I can scoot this bunk bed
and be further from that heat source. Like this one's really far away.
So I think there's going to be plenty of room to angle and maneuver and find the best footprint
for our family. But five people will sleep in here. No problem. Easy. In fact, I could see
several. We could put one of these bed pads here and one here, and that brings it up to six. You
could probably squeeze in smaller kids on each side back there. Yeah, you're talking seven,
eight people. I bet could sleep in here with little kids. So all right, well, we are going
to finish getting everything set up. And really, what time is it? Time checks 3.30. I think the
kids want to go do some skiing or some playing. We need to get a nice fire going out here.
And then I'm also going to split wood for the stove inside as well. So we'll have a fire out
here. We'll start dinner. The kids are going to go skiing for a little bit. If they can find some
patches of snow around here. And yeah, I'm going to get the wood ready. I'm going to jump in with
a quick temperature check. So right now outside, it's about 36 degrees. So I'm going to put this
other one in the hot tent. And once that wood stove gets burning, it'll be really interesting
to see the temperatures in there. Right now, outside 36. All right, here comes the Nordic
ski team. Future gold medalists. Yeah. I might do snowboarding. Snowboarding? Cool. Cool. Well,
we'll see you on the trail. All right, guys. Hey, this thing works pretty well for splitting wood.
I've never used this before. This is my first time. And it was way easier than just trying
to use the axe with the log stacked on top of like a stump. So we'll put the affiliate links
for both of these things in the description. But if you are into splitting your own wood
out at a campsite, this is super heavy. So you wouldn't want a backpack with it, obviously. But
if you're just car camping, this is perfect for splitting wood. So yeah, we'll drop the affiliate
links down below in the description. And I also wanted to mention when it comes to all of this,
RBM sent us this tent for free. We did not pay for this tent in there. What was cool about it is
Alex is the guy who was customer service. Yeah. He emailed us. We sent back and forth quite a few
emails. And I just said, OK, look, if you send us this free tent, like what do you want back? Like,
do you want me to give a like all the details of the materials and how it's built? And his email
back to me is really what sealed the deal. He's like, you know what I want you to do?
Film your family experiencing the tent. And that was basically the only real expectation is that
we use the tent and give you our feedback. But I do want to disclose that we did get this tent for
free. But we are going to use it throughout the winter. Yeah. And if you after kind of what you
see here and as you see a showcase this tent throughout that, like the cold, cold winter
temperatures, there is going to be a link also in the description for this tent. And if you use our
affiliate link, you do get a five percent discount. And by you using that link, we get a little bit of
a commission from the sale. It doesn't cost you any more than just the tent itself, but we get a
little kickback. So these affiliate links in our description are a way if you want to support the
channel that would give us a little bit of a financial payment that, you know, we'll use
towards the channel. And what's even better is you've seen us use it. So you know that. Yes. Yeah.
You know how it looks or what kind of weather we're using stuff in or if we're, you know,
any of the Amazon links and stuff like that, or the cook, the cook pans that we love. Yep. Yep.
So we're going to use them in every one because they're so good. And if there was something in
there that we did not like, we wouldn't have it affiliated. So all of the links in our description
are products that we use and support, including so far this tent. Yeah. So I'm excited to have
so much fun tonight. I can't wait. Are we focused on dinner next? Yeah, let's do dinner. The kids
will be back from skiing. We can do dinner and then enjoy this fire while we eat. The menu is
burgers tonight. You have a special burger. I have a special burger and I can't wait to show you that.
Cool. And then we have lots of things, activities planned for in the tent tonight. In the tent as
it gets darker and darker and we migrate in. But right now the weather is just so good. We want
to cook outside. Yeah. I am going to start zipping up. We had all the windows open and it's, you know,
I kind of want to start closing that down, um, as we roll into the evening. But I wanted to show
you something that was kind of cool. I thought about the materials on this tent. All right. So
every one of these openings all around the tent, there's three layers. You've got this layer. This
is the liner. This is what's going to help insulate the inside of the tent. So that's layer
number one. This can be rolled up and put aside if you wanted, because layer two, this is
camouflage, but this is like a bug netting. So every single opening are all around the tent.
You can roll up the interior and just have the bug net closed. Uh, that way you have maximum
ventilation and then no mosquitoes. In Alaska summer, this is going to be huge. And then the
third layer is the waterproof outer rain shell. So every single openings has layer one, layer two
and layer three. So that's, um, I think pretty great. And I think we're something we can totally
take advantage of all these layers and you can see starting to get a little cooler out. So we're
going to start locking this down. So we're getting ready to start up the wood stove in here for the
first time. Hey Forrest, come check out this sick tent. Check it out, dude. Hey, what do you think
of that tent? You like the camouflage? Yeah. All right. What do you think, dude?
Isn't that cool? Yeah. Get some light in here. Hold on. Come on light. One, two, three. There we go.
So you got the wood stove. And then the Christmas lights. Got Christmas lights over here.
And then we have a table. A nice table. Check out that chair. You want to sit down on that?
Is that cool? Me and mom are going to sleep together. Oh, are you? I think you're sleeping
with Sita and me and mom are sleeping together. No. Yes. No. We'll see mister. Maybe we could
thumb wrestle for it. Yeah. All right. Well, this is pretty sweet. Is it not? I like it.
Yeah. As you can see, I'm starting to zip up all these windows. In fact, I can do one
from the inside here just to show you what it looks like. So all this can be done from the
inside of the tent. Now the camouflage bug netting. Wait, mom.
And then lastly, the white liner. This is going to be such a warm tent. I can already tell.
All right. And again, we have all these packages. Okay. Here's one small critique that I would
let you know about is these materials here that hold the button on the other side are,
it's a fixed material. So it's not like a elastic. So sometimes because there's so much fabric,
it was a bit of a pinch to get it in there, but ultimately in the end it did go in. So you can
see it's really starting to seal up in here. Oh, I did remove the center pole. So I put the center
pole right underneath the bunk bed. And my theory here is that you only really need that center pole
if there's going to be a heavy wind or a heavy snow load coming, but that's not from the
forecast for tonight. So I decided to take that off just because there's not going to be any
sort of downward pressure on us this evening. If there were, I'd leave that pole in. But all right,
I'm going to spend the time zipping up all the rest of the openings, including the door.
Okay, so it is time for burgers and the kids and Jonathan are going to have beef burgers,
which of course I'm not going to have. So I have made, I was going to make a black bean burger,
but I've done that before. So I thought, well, why don't I just challenge myself and try something
new out while I'm camping. And so today's burgers are something I've had in India while we're
traveling through India. And it's, I was going to make aloo gobi burger patties, aloo being
potatoes and gobi being cauliflower. And when I was going through the stuff that I have in my house,
I didn't have any gobi. So I came up with aloo matar, which is green peas. So it's potatoes.
I don't know if you can see this through the GoPro. It's potatoes and green peas. And then I
had a green pea carrot mix. So I add a little carrots in here and I just boiled the potatoes
at home, diced them and boiled them, um, boiled and cooked the carrots and the peas. And I put
them in a bag and I'm going to mush them up. I have this idea that I can just mush it up in here.
Um, if you were at home, you just use, you know, uh, immersion blender or a food processor
or even a potato, just a potato masher. The idea being that I get kind of like a thick potato,
um, like a thick mashed potato patty, and then I'm going to fry it up and cook it up. And I'm
going to add a bunch of spices to it. Uh, luckily I have a baggie of spices right here. This is like,
um, turmeric and salt and, um, chili pepper. And so a lot of the ingredients I found you would use
fresh grated ginger. So I, but I only had powdered ginger. So I put that in there.
Obviously you would use, um, a lot of fresh stuff. Actually, thanks to our subscriber
who sent me this, this is a Mina Sahar Saffron Company. One of our subscribers sent me some
awesome stuff. This is Afghan coriander seed. So I was able to crush that up and add the coriander
seed into this mix, which is a really nice spice and a lot of, um, Indian dishes as well. And one
of my favorites, garam masala. So I added some of that in there too. Um, that was from another
subscriber that we have and a good friend of ours who brought us a, in a previous video, brought us,
um, some different Indian snacks as well. They used to live in Alaska and now they live in Seattle
and they have this amazing grocery store right down from them. So when they came up to Alaska to
visit, um, if you saw on Instagram, we went to the whale and we saw the, the, the female fin whale who
had, who died and washed up on shore and is sitting right in the Anchorage, which is right in the big
city. And so of course, um, we had to take our kids to see the whale. And so they came with us,
which was really cool. Um, and they brought us the, the, all these awesome seasonings as well.
I'm going to just add all these spices. It's really delicious. Ginger and some chili. Yeah,
bud. I saw you lie. I saw that bright light over there. You can see me through the trees. Yeah.
Whoa. That's cool. Are your brother and sister still skiing? Yep. Yep. Are they having fun?
Yeah. So you don't have a lot of snow, but the kids are really excited and anxious to get on
their skis. And so they are, um, they just brought them. I told him, I said, Hey, you might not have
enough snow to actually, this might be too much seasoning. So you might not have enough snow to
actually like ski, but they are finding whatever snow patches they can. And they are having fun
with it. Oh, wow. Oh, this smells amazing. I think it's that garam masala, but well, it just has such
a good smell. Oh, the kids are back. Hey, how's it go? Yeah. Uh, I don't know if you can see you
because it's, you guys are really dark. Cedar, tell us how it was. It was really fun. We were
racing downhill. Oh yeah. It was so fun. Did anybody wipe out? Oh, we don't know how to stop
yet. So like to stop, we were trying to do the pizza to stop, but then we keep failing. Yeah.
Like the last like three rounds, I kept on falling because like, we'd sort of like scratch up the
like, started making the snow all choppy. Oh man. Yeah. Yeah. That's awesome. But it was fun. It was
fun. Yes. Yay. Good. You can just put them right back in the truck. Cool. Yeah. Yep. Let's put your
boots out. Yep. Oh, Forrest, are you on our fire right now? Yeah. Forrest is stoking the fire.
Thank you for blowing on it and get some oxygen to it and keep that fire going for right now.
The ranger's coming by. So Jonathan's checking out the ranger, um, the little kiosk where we
usually pay to get our tent set up is, um, covered in plastic right now. So, uh, just trying to figure
out where do we pay, pay for our campsite? You got to smell it. Yeah. Even closer. Yeah. Even closer.
Wow. It smells like India. Hmm. That's really good. It's going to be really yummy. So yeah. Well, Kelly's
cooking veggie patties. I have a, uh, stash of the beef patties that I got. Let me grab those. Yeah.
You got those? All right. So I've got the burger patties. These are the Costco, uh, like 95%
grass fed. It's the ones in the green bags. So, um, I got a number of these, one for Cedar,
one for Forrest. Grant says he wants two patties and I, uh, will eat no bun, but I'll go, uh, three
patties for myself. So we'll start prying this up as well. Yeah, this can be good. And what's in here?
Just a little bit of olive oil, just to kind of fry them up. I think I need, uh, to get the paper
towels ready. Okay, cool. So I think I'm going to be pretty sloppy over here. The nice thing about
these burgers is it's cold, cold enough out here that they're, uh, frozen. I don't need to worry
about keeping them cold. So I'm just going to throw those right in. While you're doing that,
I want to tell you something. So on Instagram, we got a suggestion about the Christmas,
remember the Christmas lights that I really struggled with? Yes. Or the fairy lights I
struggled with, um, in my solo video. And there was like one big knot and I sat there forever.
I think we even... Like Christmas vacation. We even had to edit out how long I sat there and
tried to untangle them. They said wrap them around one of these tubes. Oh, good call. Just
wrap it around the tube. And then while you're out there in the woods, you, you got, you have to
unravel them and you're good. So I'm going to save this, uh, paper towel roll. Sound like the kids
had a good time skiing. I could hear them laughing and then Forrest came running through the woods
and all I could hear was footsteps. I was like, did a little panic, but it was him. And he came,
then he came crawling, which is even creepier. Like a little bear. Yep.
Okay. So I think it's time. I think we're ready. The olive oil's nice and hot or warming up at
least. And I'm just going to, it's going to be kind of sloppy, but I'm going to put my hand in
here. So hopefully it sticks together, but this is what I'm working with right now. A pile of
potatoes and peas and seasonings. What are we eating tonight? You guys are having beef burgers
and then I'm going to have an aloo matar patty. So yeah, this is going to be like a
yummy, smell this, smell this flavor. Cedar's over here. So she's going to smell.
Oh, that smells really, I feel like you just eat that. Like just eat it right out of the bag. Yes.
Okay. Oh, Oh, I just broke my patty. Okay. I was going to try and flip it with my fingers.
That's probably a bad idea. I'm trying to make the patties as big as like the buns.
Yeah. Yeah. They're pretty big buns. Okay. Check this out. Ooh, don't spill.
Steamy patties. They're pretty good. Or they look good. They're getting crispy.
All right. Cedar, are you having a cheeseburger? Yes. Okay. And I think you might want the cheddar
versus the smoked. Yeah. Okay. All right. Cedar, are you ready for your cheeseburger? Yeah. All
right. You know what I'm going to do? I'll put the, can I put the cheese on the bottom of the bun?
Okay, cool. That way the burger will melt it. Okay. And then you can fix it up. Granite,
you're up next, buddy. Okay. All right. So what I'm going to do is, which one's your bottom bun?
That one. That one. Okay. I'll put the cheese down on the bottom. That way the heat of the burger
melts it. Cool. Thank you. You're welcome. My pleasure. Forrest, are you having a cheeseburger
or a regular burger? I'm going to get a regular burger. No cheese? No cheese. No cheese. Okay.
Cedar. And can I put some ketchup on it for you? No, I want mustard. Mustard, no ketchup. I've
kind of forgot you're a mustard kid now. Say when. Oh, you want to squeeze it on you? You got your
gloves on. I'll just do it for you. Just careful when you're walking. Like that? Yes. Cool.
That looks dangerous. Here, I'll hold it for you. Okay. Thanks.
Are you going to open face? Well, I wasn't planning on it because I think this whole
thing might just fall apart. Now, the only thing that's missing... Oh, I did bring a little bit of
pollock. So some spinach to put on the burger. It would be nice to have a little chutney on there,
but... Yeah, next time. Next time. Next time I'll be on it.
It's good. It's good with the spinach. It gives it a little crunch.
Oh yeah, that's delicious. I'm going to go enjoy this by the fire. Yeah, have at it.
Horace, how's your mustard burger doing, bud? Good. Yeah, enjoying it? Get a couple of nice
little bites out of that one. All right, guys, how are the burgers? They're super good. They're
like juicy and fatty and they're like perfect, like super flavorful. Yeah, I think it's 80-20
beef. It's like 80% lean, 20% fat, which is kind of the world I like to live in. 80-20,
sometimes 70-30, but that might be too fatty. Yeah, but that's pretty good. Really good. Yeah,
this is really good. Especially with the sharp cheddar cheese. It is getting really a little
bit chilly now. What's the temperature out here? Okay, so it is officially about 29 degrees outside.
29. All right, hot tea. Hot tea. Hot tea. Yours is coming up next for us.
Just in case you're curious about the burger grease in the pan, well, I just dumped it into
the fire and it all flamed up, but then to get the bits off, it took like two paper towels.
I just wiped it off. That's the advantage of ceramic. Yeah, so these frying pans are some
of our favorite pieces of equipment because they're so easy to clean out in the woods. Just
wipe it down and then burn the paper towel. He tested the air current for the dangerous scent of
some bigger carnivore creatures who might fancy a moose. All right, you guys, we have officially
moved into the tent. We have a few things going on with the lights, so I did bring the lantern in.
We've got a couple of hanging bulbs. We have our Christmas lights. We have this LED, which does
cause a little flicker, so I apologize in advance about that, but Kelly, look at the space in here.
This is like a living room.
Granite, I'll get in the corner? Yeah. Yeah, what book are you reading? I'm reading
Wednesday Wars. And what's that purpose of that book? Was that a book club? Cool, man. Awesome.
Well, we have not fired up the wood stove yet, but Kelly chopped all this wood, so we're going
to kind of arrange this. These two are good here, and I will tackle starting the fire in here,
but I did want to point out a cool feature that I didn't notice earlier, but when I was outside,
I saw something, and that is right here. I'm going to come around. I noticed right here,
this little pocket, and it got me wondering, like, what was it all about? And if I'm not mistaken,
yeah, this should be somehow tied to the outside. Oh, I get it. I can prop that open,
so the airflow will always be pulling fresh air in from the bottom with this wood stove. All right,
now, just before I get the wood stove fired up, our temperature inside the tent right now with
nothing but our body heat and that lantern, we're at 38 degrees inside, so we'll kind of monitor and
see how long it takes to get warmed up. So just arm's length, and there's plenty of room there.
All right, we'll kick off the firebox here and see how it goes.
I'm just going to warm up the flue just for about a minute.
Okay, I can feel the flue is getting warm, warmed to the touch. Okay, so right now the fire is good.
I've got the vent, again, which are evergreen trees, very cute, fully open, and here is now a
side profile. It's a bit smoky in there, but that'll clear out in just a few minutes,
but there's no smoke coming into the tent, so it is definitely drafting
up the flue, as it should, of course. I like the glass. Yeah, me too, so you can just see.
Just watch it. Yeah, watch it burn. And what are you reading now, Kal? Oh man, so this is my, my, uh,
Icelandic? Yeah, Icelandic. I'm gonna try and say it. So, uh,
yes, um, book exchange or book flood that we did in our Christmas video that you just saw. So,
um, I read, uh, The Two Old Women. I read that, that night, like I read the whole book.
That's awesome. It was so good. I just kept reading, and it was quiet and warm in the cabin,
and so it just hooked me in. And now this one is another Alaskan author, Sue Henry,
and Murder on the Adidara Trail. I will not be reading this one on my solo camping trips.
A little too scary? Way out, huh? Totally scared myself. Um, I was already questioning my pick for
mystery, um, in my solo one, but definitely not one about murder on the Adidara Trail. So,
but I'll read it since you guys are all here with me, and not scary. All right, well, let's see. So
for me, I've got the same, uh, scenario where Kelly, uh, or I shouldn't say Kelly, but the
Icelandic spirit of gift-giving books and chocolate. I am reading One Man's Wilderness,
so I'm just enjoying that classic story, uh, tale of Dick Pronecky. So, uh, kind of his story of
coming out here and living just on this, uh, isolated cabin for all those years. So it should
be pretty good. All right, so it's cookie time now. We got the egg here. We got the cookie mix here.
We got the butter here. So the funny part is the egg is so cold, it feels like it's seeping out of
the bag. We're just gonna make the cookies in the bag. Yeah. Just like I did in my bag. We're just
gonna squish it all up, squeeze it all up, and then we're making gingerbread cookies, Cedar.
Yes. Like gingerbread thumbprint cookies. So what we do is we roll it into, like, a little ball.
And you kind of give it a little thumbprint flatness, and Forest is going to roll it in
sugar, and then we're going to fry it up. Yeah. I think in the skillet. Sounds like when you do the
skillet cookies, it's mostly frying, unless you actually have an oven that you're putting your
skillet in, or if you have a lid, which we don't have either. So you might notice that people are
starting to drop jackets. The heat is pretty intense in here already, and we are just, without
it only, with it only being a few minutes, we are at 64 degrees in here. So we're gonna have to...
Yeah, it's gone from 48 to, what'd I say, 64. Yeah, almost now 65, 66. It'll be interesting to see
what this thing kicks up to, and we are not even, like, cranking that wood stove at all. So this is
still just the initial wood. So it's gonna be a real balance of making sure we don't get too
roasty in here. All right, Cedar, how are those cookies coming along? They're good. Oh, wow. It's looking like it's...
Yeah, it definitely feels like a thick cookie dough in here. Yeah. So cool. Yeah. It only took a few,
like, a couple of minutes. So probably a few minutes per side, do you think? Yeah, I think so.
So now the red one goes over the light blue one.
Like that. Is that better? And then this one goes with that. Yay. All right, the cookies are definitely
smelling toasty. So I'm going to... Oh, dang. Well, you know what, they still be my...
It's toasted, like a marshmallow.
It's not that long. Oh, gosh. Oh, man, it's only getting toastier.
But, like Mama said, we've got a whole nother round to go. We only have five more left.
What? That's all you need, right? Yeah, right.
Oh, that's the worst one. We could cut off the bottom layer. That's true. That's no big thing. I'll just
let them kind of heat up. Well, that's good. At least we know we're cooking in here.
Look in the box. Good reading. Look in the basket. Yes. So cute.
Okay. Look in the box. Yep, there he is. I want you to, like, left over right.
Look in the house. Left over middle. Right over middle. Look in my hands.
Oh, I want a hamster now. Small cookies in your tummy.
So that one will be you. I want to get this second batch before they burn.
That one's Mom. It might be a little early. That one's Dad.
Oh, perfect. And Mom, you in the raccoon. I was the snake.
Much better than that first batch. Now, can I flip them all? Let's see.
This is a little gooey. And then, I don't know. Oh, God, this is not ready at all.
That's okay.
Oh, look at that. Pretty good. Dad, we're gonna have to do that one.
It got a little funky. What? A little funky. It wasn't ready yet.
Yeah, but yeah, it's not burnt though. Okay, that's pretty good.
So, guys, how did the cookies turn out? Good.
Good. Good. I think they look great. At least the second batch, anyway.
The second batch. It took a while for the first batch, and then they burned.
Kudos to the cook. A good mixer. Yeah, this is really good.
I still can't get over the space in here. There's so much space.
Yeah. It doesn't even feel like camping.
No, it definitely, like I said, it feels like a living room in here.
So, right now, it's about 74 degrees in here. We have zipped the door fully,
and we've zipped all the windows. We did open the liner on this window,
but the rainfly is still closed, and the mosquito netting is still closed.
So, I think we're kind of doing a pretty good job regulating.
It is going to be time to throw a log on the fire, just to keep those coals burning.
Oh, yeah, here we go. Peter, go to finish your food.
All right, looking good. All right, everybody, we have had a great evening.
You guys, what do you think? It's been pretty good so far.
Yeah. We've been skiing, ate burgers,
now we're in here watching movies. And we ate some cookies.
Yes. We made some cookies.
What a great hot tent. Yeah.
This is next level. And then, starting off with the movie.
Yeah, so we are going to wrap up Home Alone, one of our favorite Christmas movies.
So, we're going to kick back, probably turn that light off,
and just enjoy a movie for the rest of the evening.
And temperature check, it's about 72 in here. So, it's a very reasonable level.
I did throw another log on, so probably, I think when it bounces between 70 and 80,
that's okay. Yeah.
Past 80, it's too hot, and below 70, too cold. Yeah.
So, we are outside, it's 28 degrees. So, just snug as a bug in here.
But yeah, we'll sit back and relax, enjoy the movie.
All right, everyone, we'll see you here in a little bit.
Just lit logs into the fire. I've been keeping that wood stove going all night.
I usually threw in between two to three logs every,
about every two hours or so, is kind of the routine.
So, for kind of, basically since, I think about one in the morning,
I've been up every two hours, just kind of feeding the fire.
So, we've got enough wood to make it at that current rate,
for like kind of two more rounds.
And what's nice about that is we will have enough wood to keep the fire going
all the way until we have to break down.
And at that point, it'll be bright out.
So, that's why we don't have to break down this tent in the dark,
because we run out of firewood.
So, either way, I'm going to get up here in just a few minutes
and get breakfast going for everybody.
You can kind of see we put these things back, these cots back into bunk mode.
So, Cedar is up top there.
Forest and Kelly are over here.
And Granite is, of course, right above me.
All right, I'm going to start making breakfast and coffee here in just a minute.
Good morning, everyone.
Sorry about the bright light.
That's right.
The GoPro is notorious for poor low light performance,
but with the light, it looks pretty good.
Oh, that's great.
How'd you sleep?
Pretty good.
Slept on normal.
It was a little bit of a balance between being too hot and being too cold.
Making sure Forest kicked his sleeping bag off at some point.
Oh, poor guy.
Poor mom, I should say.
Just trying to balance it all.
Well, yeah, about every two hours is the wood rotation that I fell into.
Oh, yeah.
I did.
The problem is I could have added a lot more wood at any one time.
So I did between two to three logs.
Yeah.
But I just didn't want to blast this out of the tent with heat.
So I think about two pieces, three pieces was pretty good.
Every couple hours.
You know, I probably should have tried four or five just to see.
But, you know, I was like, I don't want to get too hot.
Well, I think that's the thing we have to figure out is how much wood.
And in the flue setting, like how how open or close can the flue really be?
So right now I'll just swing away from you.
But right now the fire, you know, it's looking good.
I've got the flue.
It's it's just maybe at a quarter or a third, I would say.
So two thirds closed.
You can see it's maintaining its flame really well in there.
It's a great wood stove.
Yeah, I just did the heavy dutiness of it.
I love all right, everybody.
We have officially moved the breakfast cooking party outside.
Our thought is that we want to start just getting everything broken down.
Little adjustment here in the tent.
So we have not added any more wood.
We're done adding wood.
We're going to let it burn out what we breakfast in there.
But for the cooking part of my thought process was
because I'm cooking raw bacon, not those bacon crumbles from Costco.
That is going to just going to make a mess.
I really want bacon splatter all over the inside of the tent.
What do you think there, Kel?
I agree with that.
Yeah, you agree that there's no anti bacon splatter.
Yeah, yeah, agreed.
So and then we were going to we talked about like Kelly cooking her
scramble on the wood stove, which would be perfectly fine.
But that would mean adding more wood to it.
And the time check, it's about 1030.
And, you know, we are going to start wrapping up.
So I think, yeah, we were just devoted to cook everything out here.
We've pretty much got the camp tent broken down,
but we are going to eat breakfast in there on the cots.
But either way, all good.
Getting ready.
All right.
First step is I'm going to take this bacon.
I'm going to maybe take five or six slices,
dice it up on this cutting board and then fry off the dice pieces.
And once it's rendered down,
I'll add the scrambled egg mixture right onto the bacon.
So I'm basically making a breakfast bacon omelet,
if you will, and we'll cut that down and stuff it inside the burrito shells.
Kids want breakfast burritos.
So we've got some good hot sauces that'll go with the burritos.
But first step, let's get that bacon diced up.
Hey, guys, how was it?
Yeah.
Any epic stories, crashes, wins, races, drama?
Most like yesterday.
I'd say we're still probably about 20 minutes out from breakfast.
All right.
Are you taking the sled?
Cool.
Enjoy.
All right.
So Forrest kind of out of nowhere now does not eat bacon as of 10, 20 minutes ago.
So I've decided I've scooted all the bacon up.
I'm going to scramble up his eggs just in the frying pan.
And then I'll spread the bacon back out and I'll dump in the other scramble for
the rest of us after Forrest's little egg is done.
It's kind of like every 20 minutes,
he doesn't eat something that he ate the day before.
He changes.
Very regularly.
And you're just going to heat the tortillas up in the frying pan?
Yep.
I'm just going to heat them up so they are a little more flexible.
They're not crumbly as much.
So at least that's the idea.
Good enough.
Okay.
So while they're having scrambled eggs, I'm going to have tofu scramble
similar to what I made on my solo trip.
If you saw that one, that video.
So I just take like for me, half a block of tofu and I
mush it up and put it in here.
I have my little bag of spices, which is mostly
turmeric, nutritional yeast, black pepper, salt, and garam masala.
Pre-do all the spices.
And then another thing I brought today is I tried to make
mushroom jerky.
So I was trying to, I'm always trying to think of what can I snack on
while hiking that's easy and tasty and nutritional, but doesn't, you know,
doesn't weigh a lot.
It doesn't require a lot of maintenance in the field.
So I made, I tried to make tofu jerky, but it didn't in the dehydrator or the air fryer.
Yeah.
So I marinated the mushroom.
Oh yeah.
Not tofu, mushroom jerky.
I marinated the mushrooms and then I put them in the air fryer
for like two or three hours at 250 degrees.
And then I fell asleep.
So the air fryer stopped, but they, the, the mushroom stayed in there.
And now they're like crispy.
Smells good.
They're crispy.
They have like a good soy sauce, sweet soy sauce.
It was like brown sugar and soy sauce and a little olive oil and pepper.
So, um, they're crunchy.
So I'm going to use these more as bacon bits.
Cool.
On, on my, uh,
Yeah, why not?
So there we go.
We got the meat-based carnivore version and the vegetarian-based, uh, tofu version.
Yeah.
So perfect with the
Mushroom.
You should call those mushroom bacon crumbles.
Yeah.
Mushroom bacon crumbles.
So I'm going to add that in for a little crunch, a little crisp and a little salt.
Tofu scramble with spinach and mushroom crumbles and a little bit of sriracha.
Oh, that's good.
All right, here goes my flip.
Oh boy.
Boom.
Look at that.
Nailed it.
Okay.
Here's Cedar's.
Okay.
Just bacon, egg, omelet on top of cheese with
taco sauce.
And I am going to go just basically
bacon and eggs, like a taco bowl minus any of the, uh, tortilla.
It's basically a, uh, omelet.
In a bowl.
All right, everyone.
Well, we are going to knock out breakfast that the kids have their little chill time in there.
We will then kind of clean up the mess here and start breaking down camp.
Sounds good.
We've never broken down that tent before, so I think it's pretty user-friendly,
but we'll see you here in a bit when it's time for breaking it down.
