As western Massachusetts was hit with a heavy rainstorm this weekend, all this rain could lead to issues on the road.
It is going to stay wet and breezy out
there for today. Let's check in with 22
News reporter Nick Antanakis who has a
live look at the conditions out in Chipe
this morning. Nick, it looks like the
rain is a little bit on the lighter side
right now. But how's the wind? How are
the road conditions for the morning
commute?
>> Chris, the rain is definitely light
right now, but it is present. And I will
say, like you said, those winds are
starting to pick up here this morning.
We're feeling the gusts out here in
Chapi. But when you look at the streets
itself, wet roads, yes, but no puddling
as of right now. But regardless, those
slick roads lead to the emphasis on
making sure that you're driving safe on
bad weather days like today. AAA says
that wet pavement contributes to nearly
1.2 million traffic crashes each year.
So on days like today, give your car a
check before heading out. Make sure your
windshield wipers are clearing your
windshield properly and that all of your
lights and turn signals are working and
on while you're driving. Check your tire
pressure as well, especially coming out
of colder weather like today, as they
tend to deflate in temperature drops.
AAA also says to leave plenty of room
between you and the car in front of you,
and avoid using cruise control in wet
conditions because there's a greater
chance you'll lose control of the
vehicle. If you find yourself
hydroplaning, ease off the gas pedals,
steer into the skid, and avoid sudden or
hard braking. You may also come across
big puddles on the road today. If you
cannot tell how deep the puddle is, it's
best to avoid it completely as deep
puddles can damage your car. And like I
said, right now, you can't really see
too much in terms of puddles on the
streets here in Chabe. But Chris, like
you said, with rain continuing
throughout the day today, that's se
definitely something to keep a watch out
for as you're hitting the road for your
morning commute. working for you live in
Chapie.
