William Ling
(London?, 29 October 1775 - London?, c.1831)

English oboist, organist and composer. He remained virtually unknown to music history until the discovery of a major manuscript containing his works in the Deutsche Staatsbibliothek, Berlin. He was best known for his long affiliation with the church St. Dunstan in the West in London. He was officially appointed Organist on February 5, 1819, succeeding William Duncombe. His connection to the parish goes back to at least May 1816, when he was paid for "composing the Music for the Hymns, and practicing the Children" of the Charity School. His service as organist ended on April 22, 1829, when the position was declared vacant due to the planned rebuilding of the church. He is believed to have died in or after 1831. As a composer, the manuscript with his 'Six Oboe Concerti', which is the only known documentation of his early career, provides precise dates for his compositions and sheds light on his performances. It is clear that Ling was not just a composer but an accomplished performer, as his notes indicate he personally "performed" (rather than merely conducted) at least three of his concerti. For instance, he performed his "Third Concerto for the Oboe" at the Opera House in 1796 for the benefit of the New Musical Fund. He also left a collection of 'Three sonates for the harpsichord or piano forte, one with an accompaniment for a flute obligato and two with an accompaniment for a violin ... opera I', a 'A second sett of three duetts for two german flutes, in which are introduced favorite national airs ... op.3', a 'A fifth divertimento for the piano forte', organ pieces and several songs.
