Welcome to Khazan Diplomacy. Our third topic is dedicated to Diplomacy in Ancient Greece.
The first elements of the history of diplomacy traces back to Ancient Greece and Ancient
Rome period. The sources of Greek diplomacy were displayed in the following materials.
Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, the first elements of interstate affairs were observed at the
As a kind of diplomatic institutions, three representatives existed in Greece. The Angels
of Praise Peace, meaning messenger and elder respectively, were envoys used for brief and
highly specific missions. A Kerix was a herald, having special rights of personal safety to
heralds, references to whom can be found in prehistory, were the first diplomats and were
protected by the gods with an immunity that other envoys lacked. Their protector was Hermas,
the messenger of the gods, who became associated with all diplomacy. The herald of those, Hermas
was noted for persuasiveness and eloquence, but also for knavery, shiftness and dishonesty,
imparting to diplomacy a reputation that its practitioners still tried to live down.
The Proxenus was a resident and informal perhaps similar to a council. Proxeny was also an
arrangement whereby a citizen, chosen by the city, hosted foreign ambassadors at his own expense
and returned for honorary titles from the state. The citizen was called Proxenus,
Proxenoi or Proxeny in Greece, instead of a Phryne or Proxenios.
Amphictyonic League, League of Neighbours, was an ancient religious association of Greek tribes,
formed in a dim past before the rise of the Greek polis. From 6th before century,
the Amphictyonic Leagues preserved interstate assemblies with extraterritorial rights and
permanent secretariats. In the mid-6th century, Sparta was dynamically developing alliances
and it had formed the Peloponnesian League. Delian League, confederacy of ancient Greek
states under the leadership of Athens, were the headquarters of Delos, founded in 478 before
century, during Greco-Persian wars. Smachia, Greeks preserved on existence
through not only military-political alliances, but also they created military alliances were
called Smachia. Smachia is an alliance of three donation Greek. The standard definition is found
in Thucydides, literally to have the same friend and enemies. Thus, Smachia has often been translated
as a full offensive and defensive alliance. Both definitions might be better expressed.
Beyond Thucydides, no archaic or classical Smachia, preserved on stone or in literature,
includes the oath to have the same friend and enemies, which is rather a hegemonic oath
used by various leagues of allies. Thank you for your attention.
