Extreme big-air kitesurfer Lasse Walker pulled off a world-first by jumping over the low-flying plane of Red Bull Air Race pilot Łukasz 'Luke' Czepiela. To achieve it Lasse needed to use a perfectly timed breaking wave as ramp to for his kiteboard, as Luke flew the aeroplane at an incredibly low altitude using a headwind to keep his speed low. With the weather conditions along the coast of Cape Town being less than ideal, Luke and Lasse need to combine their aeiral skills and experience at the right moment.
Today we're going to do something that has never been done before.
I'm going to jump over an airplane.
As a kite surfer, I've jumped over many things.
Like people, land, boats and even whales.
But jumping over a plane, nobody has ever done that before.
That will be a world's first.
To make this a success, everything needs to line up perfectly.
We're going to try and make the plane fly as slow as possible, straight into the wind.
I'm going to be looking for the perfect braking waves that I'm going to use as a kicker.
And as it gets steeper and steeper, it becomes a perfect ramp for me.
Just like this.
And fly directly over Luke's cockpit.
Right there.
Yes, yes, yes.
That's exactly what we're looking for.
Lost is definitely going big enough.
So that's good.
Looks like you're having a lot of fun, eh?
I'm having a lot of fun, yeah.
How are you doing up there, Luke?
Yeah, I can see you clearly.
Shall we do the test run where you fly close to the beach?
Okay, we'll do a proper one coming in.
Luke is an absolutely incredible pilot with great precision flying skills.
He has even landed his plane on a helipad.
And after he took me for a spin,
I knew he'd be the man to make this happen.
There he comes, dude.
The aircraft, it's very light.
And thanks to a massive wing, we've got a really big wing on it
with those massive flaps that you can see there behind me.
That's going to make me fly really, really slow and make this project possible.
Lastly, you can check my timing.
I can see a kicker building up.
Luke, this is magic.
Flying the aircraft so slow, the instruments, they don't work.
You really have to fly the aircraft on the field.
Why are you flying so slow?
I have to tell you, it's hard work.
I don't know if you can hear the engine, like,
off, on, off, on, full power, no power.
It's not easy, but I'm comfortable with it.
Let me know when you're ready so I can run in very slowly.
Got it, dude.
Good luck.
OK, am I good to go?
I'm ready when you are, Luke.
OK, I think I have a nice one building up.
Coming slowly, moving.
Ah, sorry, I'm too far, sorry.
Yeah, I was too fast coming in.
Let's go back, let's try again.
Wow, when he came close, that was scary, huh?
Attempt number two, where they're going to try to line everything up.
It's scary, because if Lasse goes a little bit too fast,
the distance of Luke and Lasse is going to be too big
and it's going to be very hard for Lasse to clear the plane.
But if Lasse goes too slow, then at takeoff, Luke and Lasse will collide,
which is something we do not want.
Getting a little nervous here.
OK, spot a kicker.
I hope this one is building up, looks like, yeah.
OK, there he goes again, there he goes again.
The timing needs to be spot on.
Looks like I have one that's building up and I'm, yeah, two meters, two meters up.
Ah, sorry, I'm, we're too far, we're too far, sorry.
OK, aborting.
Didn't line up perfectly and Lasse and Luke luckily made the right call to just bail.
Lasse needs to find that perfect wave to take off from,
but the tricky part is that the waves sometimes break a little closer to the beach
and sometimes the waves break a little further out.
So to get the perfect lineup, I'm sure it's going to take a couple of tries.
OK, coming in again.
Yeah, it's here, it's under me now.
I follow it.
I don't see it.
No, I don't think so.
No, no, no.
No, it's gone.
Yeah, the kicker wasn't yet right.
This was a strange one.
The one I followed, it just disappeared.
Yeah, there's no wave for Lasse to take off from.
If you hit the wave at the exact perfect angle,
that's going to give you that extra height to jump over Luke's plane.
Can you spot a kicker?
I don't see a good kicker yet, rising.
There's no shame in turning around and waiting for the next set.
I think I've got one.
Nice one, building up.
Yeah, that should be a good one.
Count me slowly.
All right, there they go.
There's a good wave on the outside.
Is that it already?
No.
This one was still on the left.
This one was still on the left, rather than central.
No, I'm not happy yet.
What is it now, really?
Ah, better, pretty better.
I went over the side of the wing, I think.
Not directly, no.
You've got to do better.
Dude, don't get me nervous again.
Everything needs to line up.
There needs to be a perfect gust, there needs to be a perfect wave,
and Luke needs to be in the perfect position.
Do you want me to be, what, over the wave or two meters behind?
Yeah, a little bit closer to me.
Okay, I will have my wing strut over the ridge of the wave.
Yeah, that's perfect.
Good, there's one building, I'm turning towards it.
I'm ready when you are, Luke.
Okay, I have one.
Everything is going to come together.
Luke is going slow and low, and Lars is going to go high and fast.
How's this one for you, good?
Yeah, the second one.
It looks good, it looks good.
There's a perfect kicker.
Is he going?
Go.
Holy man, that was crazy.
That was directly overhead, that was a good one.
I had you right in front of the prop.
I was like, if he doesn't jump, we have a mean speed for dinner.
World's first jumped over an airplane while kite surfing.
