Astronomers Found NEW Strange Surrounding 3I ATLAS Made it Begins Glowing Green! What happened..
Adding to the intrigue of the third mysterious interstellar comet, 3I Atlas, on September 7, astrophotographers Michael Jäger and Gerald Rhemann managed to capture stunning deep images of a puzzling event. The comet’s glow, which had been a reddish hue, suddenly shifted to a striking green-blue.
So, what exactly happened inside that hazy coma?
To understand this, we first need to look at why 3I Atlas appeared red in the beginning. That initial reddish glow comes mainly from larger dust grains in its coma, made up of irradiated organic compounds. These are similar to what we see in D-type asteroids and many familiar comets within our Solar System. The dust is rich in organics and likely holds complex molecules called tholins, which scatter sunlight in a way that gives off that reddish tint. Importantly, this glow likely comes from surface dust or layers that have been lifted off the comet’s crust—not fresh material from deep within. In fact, it closely resembles the dark, red-brown surfaces of outer Solar System bodies like trans-Neptunian objects and Centaurs.

However, as this object travels closer to the Sun, we gain a rare opportunity to peek into its hidden interior. This happens because the heat triggers sublimation on the surface of 3I Atlas, releasing volatile compounds that were long trapped in its surface and subsurface layers. Using the Very Large Telescope, astronomers detected a key component—cyanide—which showed a sharp spike in activity around August 25, 2025, when 3I Atlas was about 3.3 AU from the Sun, or roughly 3.3 times the Earth-Sun distance. Even more intriguing, not just cyanide but also nickel—without any accompanying iron—was found to surge dramatically at that same distance.

Also, data from the Atlas telescope going back to March 2025 showed that the brightness of the light scattered by the comet changed in a unique way as it got closer to the Sun. When it was farther than 3.3 AU, the brightness grew quickly because sunlight was reflecting off dust on the comet’s reddish surface. This explains the initial reddish glow of 3l Atlas.
But as the comet got closer, the growth slowed down because the comet started producing more tiny, bright ice grains instead of dusty material. These icy grains made the comet’s glow look different and changed how the cloud around the comet blocked light.
In short, the comet’s color change is linked to more cyanide and ice being released as it moves nearer to the Sun, changing the way it looks through telescopes.
