In the video clip, an elephant protecting its herd's young calves charges at a group of tourists on a canoe safari and flips the boat over.
We're hearing from a group of tourists
whose safari experience almost turned deadly.
And wait until you see the video.
It is absolutely unbelievable.
They were forced to flee a charging elephant
while they were on a canoe in Botswana.
You can't exactly hit reverse the way you would in a car.
The terrifying encounter was caught on video.
You can see that furious elephant.
The massive beast was protecting the herd's young calves
when it suddenly charged that boat full of tourists.
It eventually caught up with the boat,
tipping it, and sending people, as you can see, into the water.
Oh.
The first thought that came to my mind was,
this is the end of me.
I thought for sure I was dead.
And then once I was safe, I was, it's just jubilation.
I was very happy to be alive.
We're watching that man under the water.
I know.
Look at this.
Oh my gosh.
We're watching it with one eye open.
A woman was trampled by the elephant.
Experts say she likely survived because it
did happen in the water rather than on solid ground.
So I guess she was lucky for that.
Oh, but it still sounds like a painful recovery.
Elephants protecting their young are considered some of the most
dangerous animals in the wild.
Seems like the kind of thing to look at from a distance,
not anywhere close where they feel threatened.
